    Thank you so very much for the basket weave reveal video, I am 75 and could not figure out the manner they are made . I am directionally and geometrically challenged , but am a retired Physician so I am not a dummy. Once , before GPS and iPads , I was standing on a mountain with forest service map in hand and a compass, a friend came up, said “ wait a minute friend”, took the map , turned it 180 degrees , and said “ try it this way”. I’ve been doing this for years now however, it’s best to create a seal by taping the filter to the fan that way you really scrub the air.

    Tip: if you want to make the connection air tight use metal ducting tape, I got a ton of it for cheap of Amazon I use for everything HVAC, even like installing portable ACs to windows and stuff

    I am new to woodworking. Teaching myself from YT videos. How do we measure which dowel to use with which drill bit please?. (Is it a half inch diameter drill bit AND half inch dowel?) Or do you use a slightly smaller dowel diameter? (Sorry I am a visual learner!)

  • @measuretwicewoodworking
    @measuretwicewoodworking2 ай бұрын

    Yes, the drill bit diameter must match the dowel diameter exactly. This is why I recommend buying a drill guide. It both confirms the drill bit fits precisely in the drill guide hole and the dowel fits precisely in the same hole.

    How well does the glue take stain though? I'd be more inclined to use the glue mix in option 1.

  • @measuretwicewoodworking
    @measuretwicewoodworking3 ай бұрын

    Both options consist of glue + sawdust and will take stain the same. One option premixes the sawdust into the glue into a putty while the other mixes sawdust in on site with a sander.

    This is great, thank you! I'm less than a year into this new hobby, and I always find it helpful to have a mental model of what's happening that lets me predict what's safe and what isn't. Your cardboard prop is perfect. :) Quick(ish) note about friction: one thing I remember from my physics classes is that friction is almost always *lower* between two objects that are moving relative to each other. (Look up "coefficient of friction" and keep an eye out for the terms "static" and "dynamic".) I don't think the calculations matter for the purposes of your explanation, but the difference means that the roller starts out pushing forward using the coefficient of *static* frction... but as soon as the cutting head starts to push the board backwards even a tiny bit harder than the roller can push it forward, the roller starts to slide relative to the wood, which means it starts to use the lower coefficient of *kinetic* friction. Just like that, suddenly the cutting head is pushing backwards a LOT harder than the roller, and out comes the board. This is the same reason a lot of cars have ABS: a skidding tire loses its grip, so the computer steps in and cuts the brakes to that tire to let it "catch up" to the road again, faster than a human can react, to stop the car faster than it would if it just laid down a long patch of rubber.

    Another trick if you don't have a lathe is to chuck the dowel into a power drill, spin it up, and take a piece of sandpaper to it. Same idea as sanding it on a lathe.

    Thank you. I have been thinking it was me because I am quite new to using a planer. As I looked at the machine and how it worked, I could not understand why people were making these sleds with the stop at the back. Since I have not made a planer sled yet, I just let it go, intending to give it more thought when it came time to make one. It is so easy to assume that we must be misunderstanding, because we are out of step with the majority, when sometimes it is others that have it wrong. Additionally, eliminating the hot glue is an advantage.
