Swan Island Dahlias, in business for over 93 years, is the largest and leading dahlia grower in the United States. We are located in the town of Canby, in the rich soil of the Willamette Valley of Oregon. We hybridize our own new varieties, planting over 15,000 seedlings each year. From those original seedlings, it takes about 4 to 5 years to introduce a new seedling for sale. Each season we introduce anywhere from 5 to 15 new varieties that are featured in our catalog and at our farm. We grow over 370 varieties on almost 40 acres that are open to the public during the blooming season and host the largest dahlia festival in the United States featuring over 400 dahlia arrangements during the six-day festival. We are very proud of the farming tradition our family brings to the business we’ve owned and operated for three generations. We are dedicated to bringing the best and highest quality dahlias the world has to offer now and in future generations to come.

maybe a silly question, but could a little piece of buddy tape, or saran grafting tape on top of the stem hole help with rain problem? We get daily rains for half a year, don't want to kill the precious flowers... thank you.
I'm getting ready to fertilize my dahlias in my raised 8x4 bed! Is the 1/2 cup sprinkled around the plant still appropriate for that bed size? Oh in the Dr Earth Flower Girl fertilizer? Thanks!
Will you replant the toppings?
Excellent video💚💚
Adorable!!!!
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in my dahlia bed coaxing them on! 😍
Nobody tells the same things.... 20 videos, 20 ways to do.
companion planting not pesticides....
stop it! stop it now. killing the bees is not worth you making a living this way. get a conscious. I'm not buying any plants from you and I'm telling all my friends and they will tell their friends
Can't you just use Miracle Grow and dilute it 1/2 strength? Would that not work?
fabulous video.thanks
Excellent video. Well done!
I've seen 10 vidéos about that and nobody says the same thing . Not easy for an amateur.😁 But i'll try your way to do. Thank you.👍👍👍
Thank you
Love, love the tags. A good reason to buy new tubers from you! Thanks.
Thank you
I’m grateful for your videos. This video is so helpful. I dug my tubers last fall, it was so cold and my soil is clay. I didn’t divide or get all the soil off before storing them. They’re starting to sprout and I need to divide them. Some are big and full of tubers I wasn’t sure how to go about cutting. Thank you.
Great video!
Thank you. I have been seeing posts on waking them up and I have never done that. I thought maybe I should be to get an earlier start. I questioned the practice which brought me to you, I have been so successful with just keeping them waiting until the temperatures settle to plant them right in the ground.
Thank you. Swan island, how much of the fertilizer and how often do you fertilize your dahlia per 10,000 square feet?
hi, dear what kind of fertilizer do you used to feed your dahlias and how much per 10,000 square feet and how often?
Excellent video. Thank you from the U.K.
Others commented that it seemed like you were scolding. I happen to appreciate you being crystal clear. There is a lot of information out there and you earned my trust. I will do what you suggested. Yes, ma’am!
I have a quick question which I haven’t been able to find the answer anywhere. I grew all of my dahlia from individual seed this year. Ever seed grew and has formed their own plant. Now I have found that 3 of my plants have 2 very different colours growing on their actual plant. One in particular is a bright red dahlia but on the same plant I also have bright single petal yellows. Does this regularly happen??? Many Thanks Theresa Australia
You didn’t give chance at least this guy can say something . Next time don’t have people in videos if they don’t say anything you made him like a clown 🤡
Very helpful. Thanks.
Does it matter whether or not you keep them in a place that does or does not get light?
Cannot even image being surrounded by acres of dahlias. Just what I grow here makes me incredibly happy. Acres....... TONS of work, but so beautiful!
The rainy cold day was made better with your video. Thank you.
Glad to hear that!
Hi, terrific presentation. Could you Please show close up much closer up. The tubers we can see the new growth of a little green spect but really can’t see it taking about the deep down new growths and new eyes. The old, last years tubers being removed are where. The ones that don’t look good, we can’t really see which ones from far away pictures. Just like the filing. Terrific job describing it and what he’s going to do and make sure you keep cutting tools sharp but couldn’t see how he was filing it. Again , terrific presentation but please let us see what your describing… Thx
This is my second year getting dahlias from y’all with the new name tags! I LOVE them! I’m in north Alabama and those tags from last year have been in full sun for one year now. They are still in excellent condition… I did have one blow away but that was user error 😂
I love this!!! I needed this information!!!! Thanks for helping make my garden beautiful!!!!!!
Erik is the hands-on expert, but was not given the opportunity to even speak. Cheeze.
I recently read that a prominent grower plants their tubers Vertically, is there a reason you advise against this?
Great explanation, love your passion for doing it right!
Carmen can’t wait to receive the ones she ordered from Swan Island Dahlias.
Let’s see more Eric!
Any change in tuber depth for clay like soil?
when starting Dahlias early by putting a tuber or clump in a gallon container- and you accidentally knocked off the first tiny sprouts, will they grow back? :) I just subscribed! Thank you for teaching me. I'm in 9B
How much growth should there be before you start watering dahlias in a pot? and how wet or saturated should the soil be?
when will you see the first blooms from the seedlings planted out in May?
Eric has never been permitted to speak
Watched a very informative video last year from Swan Island Dahlias in Oregon on dahlia cuttings. It worked well for me and I increased the number of my Cafe Au Lait and Spartacus dahlias!
Do cuttings flower the same year?
If you cut the seed pods this early will they finish maturing and making seeds? Or do you toss ?
I've always needed to pre-start my dahlias. I have a snail problem and if the dahlias aren't at least 6 inches tall when I put them in the ground, the snails get to them. I have a grow rack so they are under lights until mid-April, when they go out to my cold frame (mid zone 5 and 5000 feet elevation)
Thanks for the info. I have learned so much form your tips. I have gardened for many years, but never grown dahlias until this year. This is late Nov in England and it is very cold. I dug this years tubers up today.
i am from zone 10b. i can't find the same soil you are using. can you please recommend what brand of soil i can use from big box stores. thanks
hi. i'm from zone 10b. do i need to dig my tubers & store them? i see there are still sprouts coming out.
I absolutely enjoyed your tutorial, so informative, thank you!
