Swan Island Dahlias

Swan Island Dahlias

Swan Island Dahlias, in business for over 93 years, is the largest and leading dahlia grower in the United States. We are located in the town of Canby, in the rich soil of the Willamette Valley of Oregon. We hybridize our own new varieties, planting over 15,000 seedlings each year. From those original seedlings, it takes about 4 to 5 years to introduce a new seedling for sale. Each season we introduce anywhere from 5 to 15 new varieties that are featured in our catalog and at our farm. We grow over 370 varieties on almost 40 acres that are open to the public during the blooming season and host the largest dahlia festival in the United States featuring over 400 dahlia arrangements during the six-day festival. We are very proud of the farming tradition our family brings to the business we’ve owned and operated for three generations. We are dedicated to bringing the best and highest quality dahlias the world has to offer now and in future generations to come.

maybe a silly question, but could a little piece of buddy tape, or saran grafting tape on top of the stem hole help with rain problem? We get daily rains for half a year, don't want to kill the precious flowers... thank you.

I'm getting ready to fertilize my dahlias in my raised 8x4 bed! Is the 1/2 cup sprinkled around the plant still appropriate for that bed size? Oh in the Dr Earth Flower Girl fertilizer? Thanks!

I’m grateful for your videos. This video is so helpful. I dug my tubers last fall, it was so cold and my soil is clay. I didn’t divide or get all the soil off before storing them. They’re starting to sprout and I need to divide them. Some are big and full of tubers I wasn’t sure how to go about cutting. Thank you.

Thank you. I have been seeing posts on waking them up and I have never done that. I thought maybe I should be to get an earlier start. I questioned the practice which brought me to you, I have been so successful with just keeping them waiting until the temperatures settle to plant them right in the ground.

I have a quick question which I haven’t been able to find the answer anywhere. I grew all of my dahlia from individual seed this year. Ever seed grew and has formed their own plant. Now I have found that 3 of my plants have 2 very different colours growing on their actual plant. One in particular is a bright red dahlia but on the same plant I also have bright single petal yellows. Does this regularly happen??? Many Thanks Theresa Australia

Hi, terrific presentation. Could you Please show close up much closer up. The tubers we can see the new growth of a little green spect but really can’t see it taking about the deep down new growths and new eyes. The old, last years tubers being removed are where. The ones that don’t look good, we can’t really see which ones from far away pictures. Just like the filing. Terrific job describing it and what he’s going to do and make sure you keep cutting tools sharp but couldn’t see how he was filing it. Again , terrific presentation but please let us see what your describing… Thx

I've always needed to pre-start my dahlias. I have a snail problem and if the dahlias aren't at least 6 inches tall when I put them in the ground, the snails get to them. I have a grow rack so they are under lights until mid-April, when they go out to my cold frame (mid zone 5 and 5000 feet elevation)
