Hello there from South Africa Thanks for showing and Sharing Just one query though. Don't know what U Folks refer to as "Mineral Oil". Pardon our ignorance. Will this be BOILED LINSEED OIL ?? Do kindly confirm TIA. ATB TC aRM
Mineral oil is made from petroleum. Not sure what they do to make it but it is food safe.
When I first started turning I made miniature items. I used Taqua nuts. They are a replacement for ivory. I made a complete tea set for a barbie doll. I then made a tea table from a piece of corian as the top and some cocobola for the base. Your goblet is really small. I will have to make some of them also. Take care and stay safe. From: Petawawa, Ontario, Canada.
I very much enjoy your videos 🤔 "But" 😲 your shorter format I lose the setup, the problem solving, the planning. So I lost 95 percent of your teaching / instructional value that you have to offer and gain about 50 percent of editing thru time just not as much value of time. You seem that you enjoy what you do as I see it, it is a loss for you as well as a loss to me. Many youtubers make content without sponsors or is this another form of advertising😳 Holding back thumbs up for now.🥴
That looks kool Tim
Wooden butt cheeks.
Been there done that
Hi Tim. I'm new to turning and came across your video. I'm wondering how you mounted the piece of lacewood for the large narrow top of the mushroom? I know you said you made a tenon but how did you make it? Did you have to mount that piece of wood earlier on the lathe in some other fashion? I'm just trying to figure out how to get a tenon on such a thin piece of wood. Thanks.
I mounted a piece of waste wood with a tenon on it in my chuck. Then I put double-sided tape on that wood and stuck the mushroom top blank on that. Then I cut a tenon that was only about 1/8 of an inch long. Popped it off the double-sided tape and then put the mushroom blank in the chuck. It does not take a long tenon to hold small pieces like that.
Digging a hole is my 2nd least favorite thing to do. My 1st least favorite is digging out the concrete from an old rotted out post. Hat tip to people who do that every day.
You used a different jig than the one you showed
Legit curious, how many charges did it take to get through that beam with the electric chainsaw?
Barely touched the battery. I probably could have made fifty cuts. If it was wet wood even more. It is the Green Works 40 volt with a 4 amp battery.
@@woodturningwithtimyoder nice!
Remember this: I am in shape, round is definitely a shape :-) Joking aside, this looks fantastic. Thanks for all the inspiration you've given us over the years.
Beautiful, and the two part design would be awesome here in Michigan where you can't build your mailposts too strong (mustn't hurt the idiot drivers who run into them!) yet the snow plows MUST knock them over at least once a month!
After my mailbox was knocked down,I replaced it with a new 12 square inch I beam, steel. It’s still standing after I 30yrs.
Disagree. Your problem with clogging happened suddenly when your bar went parallel to the log. Get the log off the ground with a saw buck and keep the bar at a bit of an angle and avoid the clogging. Also, the long shavings from cutting the long way are way easier to pick up unless you have a very smooth surface to sweep.
Tim; If you finish the turning with a skew (aka devils can opener) used in a shearing cut you can start with 400 grit sandpaper and it only takes 2-3 minutes to sand. There is a web site "International Association of Penturners" dedicated to pen turning.
I wish I could have caught the PBS years, but I enjoy every episode I come across. Did the electric chainsaw bind, or loose charge at any time?
No it was just a little slow. If it had been green wood it would have cut faster. I probably had 50 more cuts in it left.
What do you do with all the shavings Tim? Compost?
Oh hey thats a good question. Is composting doable with treated wood like this? Feels like it'd leach all sorts of nasty stuff into the ground
Not sure if it's treated this one, he just said it was kiln dried. But very good point! Gotta look after that earth!
Enter the octagon. Just when you thought it was safe to enter the octagon there was TIM😊😊😊
Very nice the preview pic I thought you were going to have an Airmail box great job and great video
Very nicely done, Thank you for sharing your video.
I'm glad you posted this! Ha ha!
Looks good, Tim. When you had it on the lathe it almost looked like you were making a cannon!
Very well done Tim. An outstanding piece of work. I bet it's the envy of the neighborhood.🙂🙂
From Washington State, although I did spend a few years in Broken Arrow in the 1990's, I have admired your woodturning videos over the years. Tim, you are a natural teacher as well as an ambassador for your craft, and your sense of humor makes it thoroughly enjoyable.
I have always said if you turn like me you better have a good sense of humor!
Enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing
That's a beautiful mailbox post. Great job on it!
Nice mailbox post. 👍
In the state of Wisconsin.. Your mailbox post MUST shear sheer off if a car hits it , or you could be liable for any injuries to the driver ! ! !
I remember the other mailbox being made, that was a while ago. I lost you until my wife bought me a tablet and I found you again.
You almost make me wish I didn't have a secure steel communal mailbox...almost...
Nice, Tim, especially since I don't even own a lathe. If you're tired from digging, wait until you hit 75. Bill
I have been wanting to see more Turners make their mailbox post. I will get mine done soon.
I will be doing this too , very soon.
Nice post how long did it take you to turn that in real time not KZread time?
Total time was about 3 hours. Cutting those edges off really helped.
After doing the math in my head the turning, itself, was about 1 1/2 hours.
Thanks!
I like it with the octagon shape.
But then it would be woodworking😁
Looking good!! I turned a full dimension redwood 4x4 post for my mailbox 34 years ago and I’m sure it’s still there. I’m not but it is.
Hey Tim, thanks for the video ,awesome work you do . Thanks for Christmas and everyday ideas
I've done pens with cocobolo and the turn out awesome. Now I know bowls do too.
One of the best smelling woods when being worked. IMO.
Cocobowlo
You beat me, lol.
Love it...
What a coooooool hand!
Thank you.
I hit the Like button during the chainsaw hoedown 😊
Nice toothpig!
Great job Tim! Amazing how an object of that size will shake an 800 lbs. lathe with such ease. Beautiful piece.
Beautiful workmanship and finish
I think if I had the nerve to turn it I would have left all of the bumps and knots on it and just turned a bowl where you did. I think you did a good job though
How far from the edge of the board do you start the first ring cut. Then each ring follows to start the next cut? Is it 3/4 of a inch?
