Flame Box Elder Platter

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Tim's buddy Joe Johnson sent him some phenomenal Flame Box Elder blanks. So wanting to show as much of the flame as possible Tim turns a square platter.

Wow cool, didn’t know you had a channel. Used to watch you on Rogers State College channel. Now I can learn from you again.

Beautiful platter. I have been told that before you apply a finish a layer or two of 90 spf sunscreen. It helps preserve the flame color. Then you can apply the finish of your choice.

Box Elder bugs can be pests but they do a beautiful job on the Elder wood. Gorgeous plate Tim!

You are so right, it's hard to turn a bowl and lose the beautiful flame figure. But I am going to try segmenting my next bowl, I make with some flaming box elder I have to see if I can save the beautiful flame figure.

I always bleach box elder. That helps the red pop, and it is supposed to prevent the fading (at least not as quickly). So far, I have not noticed any of my pieces turning brown.

Don't sell yourself short.....I would be happy to talk to you. You could tell me all about lathes and whatnot. I won't be able to buy one (no available space and no money....lol), but I would eagerly listen to your spiel.

Outstanding Tim. What’s going to turn brown, the flame or the light wood?

Those are both beautiful, Tim. In Canada (especially) they call that Manitoba maple as @dtork47 said below. Bill

Nicest piece of flame “Manitoba” maple I have ever seen……and the largest! Tim, is it easier to ride the bevel with a push cut with a parabolic flute than a v flute? I seem to have a heck of a time with my v flutes! Thanks and stay safe.
