    If MS-DOS and earlier versions MS Windows hadn't had such lousy device driver and other software and configuration semantics which required rebooting, Windows users wouldn't have had 30 years of being trained to reboot their computer just to use a software application that they just installed. It's a ridiculous habit which comes from a ridiculous configuration architecture. Unix users never had to wait for a reboot after hardware driver or any sort of software installation or upgrade (other than a kernel upgrade) even in the 1970's. As much as Microsoft called Unix "stuck in the 1970's" or words to that effect, Microsoft computers were stuck in a 1950's computing model, and they're still stuck there (just TRY to get two users simultaneously logged in and running their own desktop on a single machine.)

    I imagine the reason they wanted to make sure MS DOS was specific is because they wanted to make sure there was a widely recognised separation between their Microsoft product and other DOS systems, they didn't want it to become ubiquitous. See: all the legal issues that come with calling all permanent markers a "Sharpie".

    Dave, my "backdoor"into a WFW 3.11 PC was via utilizing unprotected NetDDE share definitions. Thanks to NetDDE I could rely on it launching an exe when called via NetBEUI from another WFW machine. Had great fun with this, pranking my colleagues in our dev and network support teams. 🙂

    This 4.0 source code is not the multitasking version, this just an extended version of previous ones. They said they couldn't find the full source for multitasking (MT) DOS but they found this early version that didn't contain the multitasking parts.

    Thanks Dave for the great video. I stumbled upon your channel thinking this was an alternative to Jay Leno's Garage but I see no 1969 Z28 Camaros or Hemi Cudas. As a retired Novell Netware file administrator I found this article very interesting. But I can not put my ISP's cable modem into bridge mode. Is there a way I could still use OpnSense for transparent filtering? My ISP cable modem is also a 5 port switch and provides nat, dhcp and wireless connection. Between the cable modem and my Linux NAS and Windows computer I run DD-WRT router which also runs DHCP for a private network for my computers. The cable modem dhcp provides ips for my streaming devices and I would like to keep them on a separate private network as I do now. Being double NATED I do not see any performance issues. Cheers and many thanks...

    I learned it as BIMDAS and my observation shows that no matter what order of operations you were taught, most people that post their answers on social media never learned it properly. Sure, they can learn what it all means and recite the order, but they fail to understand equal operators being read left to right and proceed to treat M as having precedence over D, or vice versa depending on PEMDAS or BODMAS. I always get a chuckle when someone who very clearly got a C average in basic algebra gives a lecture on Facebook on why their incorrect answer is correct.

    Thanks for the video, very interesting, having worked myself a while back (way back) as an OEM making PC for Europe (Philips), I had access to localization of the MS DOS and interesting to see the actual code. However, apologies for asking David, you mentioned the github code was screwed up a bit and I noticed one or 2 failures myself, do you have a place where all the fixes are done or a list so I can proceed to complete the build.

    Everyone talks about that story about how they bought qdos and then sold it to IBM as like a business genius move, but really it takes a special kind of scumbag to do something like that. That’s all I’ll say.

    @@DavesGarageI would have offered him a job and possibly equity stake in the company, if he was a good fit, and did good work. Which is what I think most decent people would have done. No need to disclose who the OEM client was beforehand, could have required NDA and non compete after, etc. Lots of ways to handle that. But Gates et al have a very long public track record of being scumbags, they don’t need some loudmouth in the KZread comments section like me to embellish this fact 😂

    I think the thing with the 40/80 track drives, is that the skinny half-tracks written by an 80-track drive, won't read back on a real 40-track one. You're really writing alternate tracks of an 80-track disk, as Dave explained. But the wider head of a 40-track drive will read 2 skinny half-tracks at the same time, so if those intermediate tracks differ from the ones you wrote to, the signals will be confusing to it. You can apparently get away with it if you start with a brand new, completely empty disk, but not if it's previously been written to by an 80-track drive. But all of this assumes you have a real 40-track drive you want to read stuff in, and they're pretty rare these days.

    I wish they'd nut up and open source MS-DOS 6.22 and the invisible DOS 7 from Windows 9x. Hell, while they're at it, might as well just release the Windows 3 source as well.I don't see Microsoft making any money off of their old 16-bit products. Might as well just give it all to the open source community and see what happens.

    Been trying to resolve an issue for some time on Windows 10, which might be related to the features described. I shut down the pic and it totally powers off. Episodically, it turns itself on and I have to hold the power button pressed for it to then shut down again. Any thoughts?;

    honestly, imo MS-DOS has little practical value beyond nostalgia in 2024, especially for those familiar with Unix/Linux. compared to Unix/Linux's many user-friendly features established in 70s to 80s, MS-DOS feels more like an abomination and lacks many features we take for granted even today such as treating every devices as directories, the concepts of inodes and symbolic/hard links, and the use of metacharacters, character classes and perlre
