Great review, provided some unique insights for me. Now that the dlux has officially hit the market, I'm curious that with the latest firmware update does it capture that distinctive 'Leica look' ? From what I've seen, sample shots have a rather plain color, not much more impressive than m43 from panasonic. The weak bokeh also seems to dilute the Leica look. I am worried it does not make much difference from other lower-priced counterparts, and I think by using a compact camera most of us may expect its straight out of camera results, especially for Leica(though dng is a good plus).
I’ve had all the D-Lux models and sold them with in minutes of posting an ad. Still friends with the people that bought them. This camera is superb. Yes, I’m a brand snob…..
X100VI have ND Filter & Great Looking 🙂
Yes it does
I bought the Summarit-M 75mm f2.4 and it is superb 👌 I bought it from the store at Leitz Wetzlar. By the way, I also bought a black M-A. The rangefinder had slipped through quality control without being properly set. This I didn't discover until I returned home and processed the film on the other side of the World.😡
Yeah. I had to send my 50 Summarit for adjustment. It started getting lose
Leica should have kept the Summarit 50mm, and taken back some of the market from Cosina products, Voigtlander/ zeiss zm. But they have made some dumb decisions. This is just another one.
Glad I bought the Panasonic GX-9, some time back, and then the Leica 15mm lens. I have a tilt screen, and interchangeable lenses which do not extend -- well most do not. Great compact and well built camera.
👍
Did you upgrade to 2.1.1 firmware yet? Mine didn't have issue since upgrading
Just did today! Hopefully this doesn’t happen again. It only happened a couple of times.
@@GastonShutters it should be better.
As the owner of a Q2 this camera is ugly for starters.
😐
Is the shutter noisy or not ? Thank you for your reply. I'm with the Fuji X100V since 2020.
Not at all
Happens very very rarely on my Q1. But it freezes when it’s on, not fails to turn on.
Leica released a new firmware. 2.1.1 apparently it fixed that
Gracias
De nada
Hi. I definitely have a question. I've owned the D-Lux 7 for quite some time as my less serious day to day camera. I've been waiting a very long time for an upgrade on the D-Lux 7. No one has mentioned just how much of an improvement the D8 is from the D7. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Drew
Hey man please eche k out my three videos I tell you my experience regarding the new features and how it stacks up next to the D Lux 7
Good video. My new D-Lux 8 is waiting for me at my Leica dealer.
Exciting. mine too! Enjoy it
I noticed the minimum shutter speed is 1/2000th of a second. Does it have built in neutral density filters?
Never found the need for it and I shot in super bright situations.
what part of Miami are you in?
Miami Beach. You ?

Oh cool we are close. bal Harbour area. Shoot me a DM on IG: @gastonshutters
Nice kit. Just picked up my first digital m.. m11. The Instax printer is cool, and fun. Do you print directly from camera over Bluetooth or phone?
From phone usually
What are the macro shots like? Is this camera actually comparable to a Q3 image quality wise ?
Haven’t shot macro. Nor I do much of it. So I can’t comment until I get my own copy and do another video after quite some times with it
I love the old fashion look to a camera. I’m old fashioned 😊 and I never shot in jpeg. For work digital has to be shot in raw for court.
Yeah it looks good !
Cool vid. I can see why you like Leica’s😊🇨🇦
I like them a lot. Suit me for what I so very well
good evening at the time of the success Fuji x100v the videos were numerous but for the d lux 7 not much. this is the opposite. we must not miss the mark. see you soon..
Thanks
11:37 Believe it or not, but there are people who _hate_ Instagram. The Dropbox link in the video description would be nice…
How did you like _Frankfurt am Main_ ? ;-)
Very much !
You literally sayd a lot of wrong things.. firstable if you open everything is the same thing that if you leave close because this camera doesn't have a dissipation system. Second the image from 640 to 12800 is way noisier than 12800 to 102000. Third this is the proof that this kind of "overheating test" doesn't mean nothing. It may overheat and it may not. It depends from the situations. The only thing that is 100% sure is that the Sony Zve1,a6700, a7c ii,A7 iv and all the other cameras without cooling fan are suffering by overheat because they don't have a system to dissipate the heat. But, if you record in HD you can record unlimited time with every camera. 4k in Sony cameras are something you have but something you have to moderately use
You forgot to mention the unreal build quality of the Q3. It feels amazing in the hands! I had the X100V when it first came out. Sold it off almost immediately because the thing overheated like crazy and the camera shake made the video useless. Got the Q3 and its infinitely in another class in every way.
Indeed.
I have the X100V and the Q2, and I struggle with this daily. The Q2 has the best ergonomics, handling and user experience out of any camera I have ever owned. With that said, the Q2 DNG files require more work than ANY other digital camera I have ever used. It's brutal how much you have to underexpose to not blow out the highlights, which makes the JPEGs basically useless. The Fuji just gives you great photos straight out of camera. But, when you compare image quality, the Leica blows away the Fuji.
I don't see this being a problem with my Q3 when selecting the right metering mode. For extremely bright situations, setting up highlight priority metering mode should help, although I sometimes find it underexposes certain scenes significantly. Because of this, I prefer using center-weighted mode instead. You might also consider intentionally underexposing by one stop or 1 1/3 stops. Additionally, if you shoot in Shutter Priority mode, you can set up the back dial for exposure compensation and adjust accordingly. I don't shoot in JPEG, so I can recover highlights up to 3+ stops without any issues. On the other hand, the Fuji excels in producing the best color for JPEGs. I particularly like the Classic Chrome. It's the only camera where I might use JPEGs because they look ready straight out of the camera. This is one of the main strengths of the Fujis. However, as you mentioned, the lens on the X100V and X100VI is decent but not as sharp as the one on the Q3. Ultimately, the Q3's higher resolution can be fully utilized because its lens can resolve the 60MP sensor and likely more. In contrast, I find the X100VI struggles at 40MP, especially when shooting wide open.
I am actually surprised that an old company like Leica produces bad products like these cameras and sells them to us at very expensive and crazy prices! This company is supposed to be held accountable for such poor products that make people laugh!
While I don’t have issues that refrain me from using the camera and don’t have these issues with other cameras, any electronic company will have firmware patches to improve their product as bugs are discovered.
Hi. I heard from video the you want to sell the new sumilux how much do you want for it?
Hit me up on IG : @gastonshutters
I haven’t had that issue.
🙏
I am thinking about buying a camera as a beginner. I am considering either the Leica D-Lux 8 or the Fujifilm X100VI. What do you think? Which one should I buy, or do you have any tips for purchasing one of these two?
Do you want Zooming the D Lux 8 is the only one offering this. Otherwise the X100VI is also a great option if you one a fixed lens 35 equivalent.
Get the lumix lx100 ii, its nearly the same as the dlux8 but 60%cheaper. If you master the lx100ii you can invest more
The sensor and lens are the same. The shooting experience id far superior on the D-Lux 8. Menus, OLED evf and screen that’s brighter and higher res than on the lumix. USBC 3 fast charge rather than slowed micro usb. The menu navigation is superb. The only thing is missing is the flip out screen! Amazing image quality and printed as big as 17x11. You can’t tell if the image was shot with an SL3 or the DLUX 8.
any reason why I find that the EVF and rear screen always display in B&W in the photo mode? thanks in advance
Check the profile you have selected. Change it to standard. You can always create profile with specific setting to jump around setting without fiddling with a bunch of options each time
@@GastonShutters thanks
Anytime!
Very nice review. I have both of the older design Noctilux-M 50 mm lenses (f/1.0 and f/1.2j and the newest Summilux 50. They all render images differently. I hope to get several more Leica 50 mm M lenses over the next year (Noctilux f/0.95, non-apo- and apo-Summicron). The aperture clicks on my Noctilux-M 50 mm f/1.2 feel uniformly stiff. IIRC, swirly bokeh is caused by field curvature (a lens that doesn’t create a flat field). Also, spherical aberration alone refers to the inability of light at a given wavelength to not focus at the same point. Color fringing errors are referred to as chromatic aberration (lateral and longitudinal) and spherochromatism.
Glad you enjoyed it.
I find the comments interesting - "If I'm using an EVF, I'm gonna bring my A7 or R5" (why carry a whole separate system if you just need an EVF here and there? but to each their own) and "If you use the EVF, maybe the M11 isn't for you, perhaps you should get the SL" (So Gaston said he uses the EVF in certain circumstances not all the time. The M11 is also a very different user experience than the SL system) I also don't get how people think it's an "If or that" "Yes or No" decision. Owning a EVF gives you OPTIONS. I would always rather have the option of having it in tough focusing situations, low light or wide aperture lenses - especially of longer focal lengths. It def opens the camera up also for perhaps more critical work where framing/focusing needs to be more key. Again, options at not a huge size or weight cost. I do agree about the resolution. Not sure how resolution engineering wise would currently work (in terms of size, power draw, stability, and cost - the SL's EVF is higher res, way larger housing - so there might be some tech limitations - but in this area I'm not an expert).
Also not evf can tilt like this one and I use that feature a lot !
@@GastonShutters yeah, once you have that feature its hard to not.

Thank you! ... 👌
You're welcome!
Thank you very much for your great informative overview. I have already made my decision! By the way very nice PP 5990!!
Glad you enjoyed it.
I don’t Leica the look of that.
👍
If it was full frame with a 21mm lens I’d be interested.
Too wide for most situation but why not.
Hi. Can I ask you where you sold your first lens when you replaced it with this new one? I have a collection of lenses and a Leica camera that I would like to sell. my regards.
I was able to returned it to a Leica Store I bought it from but KEH, MPB, Adorama, BH are great places to sell gear.
@@GastonShutters thank you 🙏
Anytime
Great review Gaston. How does it compare to the Summaron 28mm?
It doesn’t compare. Different rendering. Dospje is soft around edges but faster at f2.8. The Summaron is sharp and image is great across the frame and of course more expensive.
The Summilux steel rim, re-issue is seriously overpriced and fraught with inexcusable design and quality control issues. It's crap.
I have to agreed with price and quality issues. I had to send mine to have the aperture adjusted. …
made in china nice work leica...
It’s a great camera. And it feels better built than the D Lux 7.
I got this with my 6 previous m11 copies, anyway I just bought again a monochrome m11 to use my M lenses 😂 it s a trap 🪤
6 copies? Wow. I never had to replace any of them and I own the three M11
I sold most copies out of patience 😂 the only one I’ll keep with peace of mind and knowing the issues is the monochrom for IR photography 😊
👍
weird , everyone seems like shoot this in WB. i guess this camera only good for WB
WB? White balance?
@@GastonShutters Guessing he/she/they mean B&W???
It sure
Id love to see photo examples compared between this and the ricoh gr iii
Good idea. Once I get my own copy I will do that
My Q and M cameras each do this occasionally, and each time I panic and then disengage the battery as you did. Then I suppress that traumatic memory until the next time it happens. Truly, it’s not a big deal, but every time it happens, I worry about the camera turning into a brick.
yeah I feel you !
Will the camera remember the zoom position after full power off or energy saving power off ?
Don’t remember. I believe it defaults to 24mm
I am french and I own the D-Lux 8 since july 2. The camera is what I expected and the quality and ergonomics are as good as described here and there. What strucks me is the TOTAL LACK of ergonomics relatively to the zoom. - No restauration of a saved zoom position when the camera is reactivated. - No display of the zoom position. To know the zoom position, you must activate the W/T button. But activating the button changes the zoom position 😵💫. - No possibility to choose a step-zoom (24-28-35-50… positions) - No possibility to parameter the middle lens ring as a zoom ring. I repeat… Leica has completely obliterated the zoom ergonomics. More than that, it has erased the zoom ergonomics that existed on the D-Lux 7. Who knows wy ???
I know. No camera is perfect and we are always are going to be unhappy about something but I just like the images I create with it. Not a camera for sports but a great everyday carry.
Yes 5 times a day, most unreliable M ever
That’s a lot. And this only happens when you suddenly turn on- off -on. You do that combination that often ?
@@GastonShutters it would just freeze up and stop responding while shooting 5 to 6 times a day. Had to do a hard reset by pulling the battery out to get it going again.
I had that happened a few times before the latest firmware but I think it's been fixed for me.
Had this with some SD Cards, but never with SanDisk. Might have something to do with it. Or not. But it hurts at that price point :)
Don’t think SD is an issue. Using fast Sony cards
@@GastonShutters I asked Leica directly and their response was they are testing with SanDisk and never have this issue. Speed doesn’t seem to be the only factor. However, for whatever reason it happens, it shouldn’t :)
Spoke to an engineer at wetzlar that asked me a few questions after I posted a prior video about the freeze and he told me that they have tested Sony cards and if they have an asterisk in the back they are approved from M11. I guess they had an issue before...
@@GastonShutters hm, ok. Thanks for that info. Let’s hope they fix it soon

Bro you’re in Paris, careful with your expensive gear laying on outside table.
All good, all gear safe.
I have a dlux 109. Honestly, a camera like this is all you need lol. I have mirrorless cameras and have more fun with my 109 than I do with those. To many people fetishize about lenses, megapixels, sensors, and on and on and on.
That is true
I too use a 109 and it is fully capable for my needs. The D-Lux 8 would be even better. I have 2 Lumix full frame cameras and I achieve better results with the 109. Note, I did not say the 109 has better image quality, I take better pictures with the D-Lux. I’ll likely go for the 8.
Spent some time with it in NY and definitely getting this bad boy
Had it sometimes on my q3
I don’t believe I experienced it on mine Q3 yet.
