I'll also provide a detailed comparison of the Leica D Lux 8 against the Fuji X100VI and Ricoh GRIII.
Welcome to my in-depth review of the Leica D Lux 8! In this video, I'll share my experiences shooting over 2000 images with the Leica D Lux 8, and you'll see plenty of sample images and videos, including stunning 4K footage at 24-30p. I'll also provide a detailed comparison of the Leica D Lux 8 against the Fuji X100VI and Ricoh GRIII.
The Leica D Lux 8, while similar in hardware to the Leica D Lux 7, boasts significant improvements. Notably, the D Lux 8 now shoots RAW DNG files, offering greater flexibility in post-processing compared to the JPEG-only D Lux 7. I found the autofocus to be responsive, even though I tested a prototype firmware. By the time the D Lux 8 is released, its performance should be even more reliable.
The D Lux 8's design takes cues from the Leica Q3, making it look like a mini Q3 when the lens is retracted. It retains the same versatile 24-75mm f1.7 to f2.8 lens, delivering excellent performance in a compact, fast package.
A standout feature of the Leica D Lux 8 is its Micro Four Thirds sensor, which provides impressive dynamic range, potentially surpassing cameras with larger sensors. The camera's handling is comfortable, even without a grip, and its performance is highly responsive, producing great image quality. While it may not compete with the superior sensors and optics of the Leica Q3 or M11, the D Lux 8 serves as an excellent secondary camera, especially for those who prefer carrying a body with a prime lens.
Though the D Lux 8 can shoot video, I wouldn't consider it the best option for vlogging or hybrid shooting. It excels as a pocketable photography camera. Priced around $1600, it's a great entry point into the Leica ecosystem.
After extensive shooting, I'm pleased with the results and the control offered in post-processing. In this video, I'll discuss whether the Leica D Lux 8 is worth the investment and who it’s best suited for.
Make sure to watch both parts of this comprehensive review. If you find value in this video, please like and subscribe for more content like this. Enjoy!

As far as this camera the D-Lux 8 is concerned it is not a an MFT camera. The camera uses only 85% of the area of the MFT sensor. The answer to your question is a very positive yes. After nearly 50 years of photography with film in all formats, and digital since 1999, I can tell you that 99.9% of photographers of today do not need more than 24 MP, or any larger sensor than an MFT. The rest is in the head of the photographer, always thinking that somehow more MPs on a larger sensor and more features of which 90% are frivolous to a photographer's needs, will make them a better photographer. There is nothing further than the truth. I have commented on you tube several times in the past few months, that some of the most breathtaking landscape photography that I have seen in the print of about 24X16 size, were done by some guy with a Nikon D700 and a bunch of old Nikon AI-S lenses. That is a 12 MP camera of nearly 18 years of age and some old lenses that were nearly 50 years old. I think Leica are aiming this camera as a sweetener to the photographer who wants the red badge, but is either unable or unwilling to pay the steep price of the Qs and the Ms. Once they are in with a Leica, they will probably have to upgrade to the Q or even the M in the near future. This is the prime reason of giving an old tech like the LX100II innards a mini Leica M body, so they feel they are part of the Leica family. Would I buy it? Not at the asking price, it is 30%~40% overpriced. at around a $1000.00, maybe, at the asking price, NO.

@@lensman5762 Yes, I mentioned that the camera doesnt use the true 22MP only 17mp which is what the lens covers. I agree with you, I've shot with 1" sensor Sony cameras and taken some of my favorite images.

@@lensman5762 Not too long ago I bought a used Sony RX10, the original version, for around $400. The sensor is a bit smaller, yes (1", 20MP), but it has a Zeiss 24-200 f/2.8 (constant aperture) zoom lens. The photo quality of this unit is excellent. I think good 1" cameras are the real competition. You can get the latest RX10 for around $1200, and that camera does it all.

@@lensman5762 I was about to write something similar, would i consider M43 in 2024 yes, but not a crop of M43 based on 7year old technology in a new wrapper. Leica could of used the G9II sensor with PDAF and all the modern features, and re-built the lens to cover the full sensor... or just offered the camera with a fixed focal length. As far as printing goes, I print professionally, and viewing distance dictates the resolution required, but at a normal viewing distance I'd happily print a good 12MP image to 20" x 16" , but the more resolution the more possibility, I'd never refuse more MP I may be biased as a Fuji X100VI owner, but if giving the chance to swap the X100VI for this, I'm keeping my X100VI 100% of the time. This is over priced and to me, looks like a cash grab by someone in marketing by putting a 7 year old camera in a new wrapper that looks like the Q, knowing that people (not necessarily photographers) are paying £1500-£2000 for the X100VI to use as a fashion accessory they will probably pay that much for a Leica too, I feel most photographers will skip this (at least the ones I know) and either try and get something else

I have not received any information regarding dust proofing nor I was able to find it online with the limited info that's being published. The camera looks more sealed than before and it should be able to sustain a drizzle. The lens is not removable.
For some, the camera's ability to use DNG is a key point. Do you know if modern software such as DxO PureRaw 4 or Topaz AI can process the D-Lux7 raw files to make it as good as the DNG coming out of the D-Lux8? Or does using that sort of software on the DNG files significantly improve them in terms of detail resolution etc?

@@GastonShuttersok I get that the Leica has a zoom lens and the Ricoh doesn’t. But let’s talk image quality. I had the Panasonic version of the 7 and now have Ricoh GRiii. Frankly, the image quality of the Ricoh is superior. The 24 mp apsc sensor just delivers better quality than the 17 mp micro 4/3s. So there is a comparison- the zoom on the d lux vs the better image quality and lower price (not to mention IBIS) of the Ricoh
@GastonShutters

Yeah the image quality and lens quality of the Ricoh is outstanding. Not having an EVF is an issue for me on the Ricoh. But agreed. Sensor and image quality the Ricoh is top. Really good review - an excellent overview. It's maybe a bit ''spen and last-gen,' but I still think there's a lot to like here. For me this would be a fun, casual prop for occasions where a bigger or manual camera was inappropriate/inconvenient. My D Lux 7 shot RAW… I rarely shot JPG with it.
From the specs and such, seems like it is the exact same thing as 2018's Panasonic LX100-ii? Even the sensor isn't those newer M43 from 2023/24..

IMO if it was great 6 years ago it’s great today. Not much has change in terms of sensor or image quality honestly.
Sadly these days just don't prefer anything made in china. Don't like the politics of financing things they're doing these days. Made in Japan was fine. Speaking as someone using Leica & panaleica ... Thanks for the video. Good as always

Doesn’t the DLux7 take RAW images? Were you saying the 7 only takes jpgs?

I just looked around online - the DLux7 does shoot RAW. I think the file name is RWL, not DNG. My wife and daughter both own a DLux7, but I don't know it well enough. I shoot M11. For what it's worth.

The D-LUX 7 and D-LUX Typ 109 do capture RAW images, as RWL files, just as @joebrown479 said. The RWL files are quite flexible for editing in my experience. I honestly don't know if DNG will be any better in Lightroom.

For what I was explained is that DNG are more size efficient and store more information.

That’s true
Some have mentioned that Leica is doing this as a "cash grab," an ornament for TikTok-ers, or a gateway camera into the more expensive Q or M lines. I believe this camera is made for someone that wants portability, a zoom lens, and a unique minimal design. As for the red dot, everyone knows that all Leica cameras come with a "Leica tax" and some are more than happy to pay for it!

It has so much potential, but the sensor needed improving (why not the G9ii sensor then crop to circa 20mpx?). Still, it's fun. I climb mountains and I could imagine this as a lightweight travel camera. I have an old rx100iv and I'd hope this takes slightly better pics.

it is a really fun to shoot camera. But a crop M4/3 sensor in 2024 is kind of like a joke. This camera needed to be APSC but that would have made the mens bulky. At least a 35mm fix lens with an APSC sensor, a tilt screen and 40 10 bit 4:2:2. But we got non of that.

@@GastonShuttersif you compare the size of m43 vs canon aps-c, not much different and (for leica) hardly worth introducing a new sensor to their limited design resources - easier to do a cosmetic refresh on a lumix lx100m2. Biggest issue with this camera is not the sensor, but the fixed screen, poor 4k video with no stabilisation and out-of-date wifi. I own the lx100 since launch date so know this platform well. Great review, nicely presented. 😊
This review should have been more brutal. The only improvements are superficial - making it look more like a Q3 on the outside and menus. The camera is compact… but only when turned off! The lens extension ruins the compact form. The video capabilities do not look great. Keep shooting with the M11, but use your iPhone for wider shots or video. The D-Lux 8 is strictly produced for novice photographers to suck them into the Leica ecosystem. Leica now has an app that makes your iPhone shots look more “Leica”. Will you do a review on the App?

It depends where you find value. There are going to be other cameras with much more tech but end of the day is the camera with the whole tech what are a looking for? What I mean by this is that we are at a level in technology where is difficult to find a camera that will produce a bad image. If this is the camera that inspires you to take more photos then the price may not be as bad but if you chase technology and a pony of many tricks then this camera is definitely not.
I love the idea of it, but you just KNOW the D-LUX 9 will have phase-detect auto focus...

Yeah I think Panasonic is going a different route these days.
I agree that this camera can't be compared to the Ricoh or the Fuji X100. It has a zoom lens that the others do not. To me that is its only appeal over the other two. And to be honest, that wouldn't be enough for me to buy it over the Ricoh or the Fuji, especially the X100vi. Bigger sensor. Far higher resolution. I would have zero interest in this faux Leica.

I very much doubt you’ve used a previous model (d-lux 7 and previous to that) if you’re suggesting it didn’t have raw. It didn’t have DNG. Thats a huge difference and just makes me think you’re lying about your previous history with this series of cameras to be honest.

I meant to say DNG, the previous one had RWL which are heavier raw format and not as efficient for what I hear vs DNG. And yes I'm a camera junky so you can rely on that info.

I prefer the form factor to stay small while being better at low light than, cramming more MP. remember even with a M4/3 sensor the lens only covers a portion of the sensor making it effective 17MP out of 21MP and this is due to optical design, otherwise with an APSC sensor the lens would be huge and probably everyone will be complaining of that too. Photographers we are never happy....
Seeking opinions, does this camera good for novice beginner?

For photography yes. But do your research on other offerings. You may want to start with a camera that you can put the lenses you want. Do your research to get the most bang for the buck
