Thanks so much for this knowledgeable video! I'm watching this as an incoming highschool sophomore after discovering 3+2 PA programs today. A few weeks ago I found out about BS/MD(/DO) but now I believe that being a PA is definitely an option for me as of right now considering the pace I'm taking on education. I hadn't researched much on healthcare occupation last year but thats when my guidance counselor suggested and decided that I'd be graduating a full year early. Thinking about it now I'm not sure that I want to continue that path but it does sound tempting. Aside from that I'm trying to find shadowing and volunteering positions at local hospitals and I'm also considering taking a certification course at my highschool that will grant me a certificate or license in an entry level healthcare job to get hours in before applying. Again thank you so much for all this advice, and if you don't mind do you have any tips on what else I could/should do in my case?

Great question! It’s so difficult to make such a big decision in high school but if you are going to pursue an accelerated path like this, then you need to decide 100% whether you want to pursue PA or MD/DO. Once you’ve decided, then apply to those programs and stick to that pipeline. Keep your grades as high as possible, get volunteer experience and as much healthcare experience as possible. If anyone wants to go into NP school, they should do their due diligence and research the school thoroughly. Agree and disagree- Im a current EM PA. The amount of variability amongst docs is notable. Most aren’t that much more knowledgeable than my more experienced APP colleagues. Most of the knowledge gap comes predominantly from more reps doing harder things/seeing more complex patients under the guidance of an attending in residency. In terms of basic science the docs may know a bit more about errors of inborn metabolism or pathology bc they get tested on it unlike us, but not much. For those docs who are leagues ahead are just naturally smarter/more studious people. Most docs just seem to power through school and get more reps doing harder things. Ultimately it’s residency that seems to differentiate them. I think a PA to MD bridge is simple enough and really depends on testing - the studying for which can be better had through the plethora of incredible third party medical education resources like OME, Sketchy, ANKI, etc. A good residency where you have the support and time to level up seeing more complex patients with attending support is the key

a PA to MD/DO program should just be regular 4 years medical school with the same board exams needed as any other medical student. There shouldnt be some cheat code loophole to becoming a physician, but they should just make it so that the acceptance requirements for the program takes the PA clinical experience into account alongside MCAT and prereqs. I think PA's should most definitely have opportunities to get to the next level if they wish to, but making a loophole to becoming a physician by doing some online 2 year program is a disastrous idea.

IMO, physician training (although most rigorous) also varies within themselves. People argue that on average some variability between MDs, DOs and Carribean med schools. I can see 2 year PA to MD bridge program being doable if the student can pass all the same USMLE boards (step 1 and step 2) as med students then go into residency for the same amount of years as a trained MD. This is of course if PA schools continue to be competitive - meaning low acceptance rates, no online programs, mandatory proctored exam, standardized EORs, and a passing PANCE score.
@BorisThePAАй бұрын
I wish that were the case, but I can’t agree… Time in training is important and the time medical students spend in those clinical years is crucial.
@asakimx9226Ай бұрын
Medical school cannot be condensed into 2 years. There is no way you can get the same level of education in that amount of time. I highly doubt they will ever make programs like that to just throw out medical degrees without someone having gone to medical school.
@grahamduff7383Ай бұрын
Totally agree with you on this. The best PAs that I know all recognize that the MDs/DOs they work with just have such a deep level of education that they will never have no matter how many years they have practiced medicine. The years of residency shaping them into their specific specialty along with their in depth medical training from medical school equip them with experience and clinical reasoning that no PA or NP will ever have unless they go back to the beginning and go through all those same steps. Midlevels have to accept that they chose this path and if they truly desire to be a doctor they need to do it right.

This is a very inspiring story, although I still feel out of reach from attending a physician assistant program. As of now, my gpa is not too bad, but I am having a hard time figuring out how to work along side a PA or APP in order to receive a LOR. I am currently a licensed practical nurse, but I do not work in a close proximity of a PA, although I work under a MD at my current job at a long term facility. Would I be able to ask the MD at my current job for a LOR, or should I shadow a PA, in which I could possibly receive a LOR from.

I don’t think you need two or three years if your ultimate goal is PA. One year should be plenty as long as you have the prerequisites and GPA. I wish that were the case, but I can’t agree… Time in training is important and the time medical students spend in those clinical years is crucial.
Medical school cannot be condensed into 2 years. There is no way you can get the same level of education in that amount of time. I highly doubt they will ever make programs like that to just throw out medical degrees without someone having gone to medical school.
💯 yes, humility is important. Someone once told me that the most important thing a PA knows is what they don’t know… Where the line is.
WOW! This collaboration is very informative! I'm a mother of an African American son who will soon be applying to PA schools. I have been binge watching videos to gather as much information as I can to support him in this journey. This video hit on so many vital points. Thank you Boris and James for such a great video!
You’re very welcome and best of luck to your son! Please have him reach out if he needs help with his application
You’re welcome! Best of luck to your son! Reach out if you have any questions!
Why not both? You need 3 LORs and you can have up to 5
Hey Boris, just wanted to thank you for putting out these short and concise answers to questions. Very helpful.
You’re very welcome, I’m glad it’s helpful! I appreciate all the great questions
When she started talking about wanting to be a mentor.. really shows how sweet of a person she is. Honesty and humility.. she will be a great PA!
I 100% agree
Thank you! That means a lot 🥹
Thank you both for taking the time to record this!! Its really appreciated ❤️
You’re very welcome, Breona is such an inspiration we had to share her story
Thank you for taking the time to watch 😊
It seems like Rutgers really does find all the gems and takes chances on people that constantly pays off for both parties… it’s very refreshing to hear/see an institution like that is out there for people and actually wants to help you succeed and be apart of their growing family, love that!
Their program is so amazing… I’m trying as hard as I can to sit down with one of their faculty for an interview if they will allow me to
Yes, Rutgers really do take their time to look at applicants as a whole instead of just numbers and is an incredible program. Thank you for taking the time to watch 😄
I have a bachelor in sports management, but I am doing a scrub tech program right now and be done in October, I plan on doing 2 or 3 years of scrubbing to get the foundation etc after doing that go to Pa school and still be scrubbing . Is it possible for me to do that?
I don’t think you need two or three years if your ultimate goal is PA. One year should be plenty as long as you have the prerequisites and GPA. As far as working while you are in school, it’s not advisable. PA school is extremely intense. Some of my classmates worked while they were in school but not much. You simply don’t have the time.
I like this!
Try it, bro, it doesn’t have to be much just give something
