Chalid Raqami

My name is Chalid, and I've been a fan of e-ink technology for quite some time. I'm testing e-ink devices since 2010. After more than 100 different e-reader tests for my German website, this channel is dedicated to sharing my experience with the latest e-readers, other e-paper devices, and sometimes other tech, in English as well.

Welcome to the channel, glad to have you here!

    It still sounds great for displays in shops, where you can have a coloured digital display with need of much power and can change it every now and then if needed.

    I bought the Kobo Libra Colour but I may return it due to a few things that bother me about it. I just ordered the Boox Go 7 to compare against it. I already have a Boox Page that I bought earlier in the year. I have to say, I am one of the few people I think that actually likes the buttons on the boox being close. It lets me just slide my thumb up and down to turn the page forward or back.

    All i need this for is for sheet music (since we also play outside and on a normal tablet i cant see anything). It needs to be able to connect to other android tablets, windows PC, read PDFs and be able to turn the display for if the notes are "printed" sideways. And i also need to be able to create folders and sort my stuff. Also a decent refresh rate for turning the page mid playing (with a footpedal) would be nice. Since this is currently on sale for 300€ till july 20 this is BY FAR the cheapest option. Is it ok for those needs? I also heard you cant zoom in is that true?

    My regular iPad (or pro) is the best and only way to read comic books digitally. The color and art is meant to be seen on a vibrant/larger display. I use my E-reader for regular books only, outside or in bright environments. I don't understand the purpose of having a color display on a e-reader meant for regular books... unless you want to annotate/take notes/draw in color, but even then I would just use the iPad or another tablet. The paper feel (while using pen) is not something I would care about on a device mainly used for reading. The E-ink tablets are cool (I guess) but they are way too overpriced for simply reading regular books. The utility of reading comics or manga with one of these isn't the best experience in my opinion. If you're going to do more than just read on it, I would recommend looking elsewhere for something that you can clearly get your money's worth. $200-$500 for one of these is ridiculous. Or you can just buy 10 of them like this guy.

    There's actually a third e-ink technology with mentioning, DES or Display Electronic Slurry. There are no current products using it, but it is worth mentioning. I only know of two devices that used it, both one-off kickstarter tablets which don't have any second generations planned. It has better color saturation than kaleido, but seems to be more fragile; both devices had a very high rate of screen degradation - mine has a problem where the cover magnets may have broken the ability of the slurry to refresh along the bottom, making the bottom 1/2" a blurry unreadable mess. The rest of the screen still looks great after a year, but it's not an issue I have heard with the other screen types. We may see it resurge if the reliability can be solved; in addition to the better looking color and contrast, it's apparently cheaper to manufacture.

    So, I really want an e-reader for comics and books that leaves me alone on most everything else. I have a lot of trouble focusing when on my phone/tablet and the only thing that has ever worked for me (that wasn't paper) was my e-ink Kindle gen 3. If ALL I want is comics and books, would this or the Kobo work better for my use case?

    Would be nice for Kindle to have color and monochrome together. Color for comics and other picturesque material. Monochrome for pure reading. But thank you for ur explanation on the limitations of color e ink. Need to find a way for the technology not using filters and have individual e ink pixels to put out color and black and white similar to AMOLED. In this case for monochrome the pixels displaying other colors can be off while only black is on. And if it's a color image with some white either keep the white off or muted or keep the LCD glass color looks nice to look like paper as even some comic books they don't use white color often, just the natural paper color. But yeah let's hope they come up with something soon. Am holding of buying a kindle as don't wanna waste money on black and white display and few months later color comes out.

  • @ChalidRaqami
    @ChalidRaqami7 күн бұрын

    No, unfortunately that's not possible. The Kindle app is essentially a stand-alone app and doesn't integrate with the rest of the system.

    @@emcdonald75 I have a Boox Note Air 3C, not a Go Color 7, so assuming it would work similarly, you can manually set your lock screen image (or images). What I've done is take a screenshot of the book cover or download a cover image for the book (or books) I'm currently reading and then manually set that as my lock screen screensaver. If you want you can even choose multiple images to alternate through each time your screen is turned off/on. It won't automatically change based on the book you currently have open in an app, but you can manually cycle through to the one you want if you care about it being accurate to the exact book you have open at that moment. Personally I was happy with it showing up as any one of the books I'm currently reading. It's really fun having the book covers in color.

    I wanted a device for scrolling, reading or browsing on bed before sleep. I owned a palma for that but miss the color a lot. Text reading notba priority as already have a leaf 3 for that. Seems like this is the closest thing i can get now? And seems like this is a better buy than the bigme even without bsr n suffer from ghosting issue? I ordered the Kobo Libra color yesterday but fall into buyer remorse as it cantbdo scrolling or 3rd party app 😂😂 i know my perfect device will probably be the Mediatek900 Hibreak pro or a palma color, but that seems to be at least half year from now😂

  • @ChalidRaqami
    @ChalidRaqami7 күн бұрын

    It really depends on what's important to you. - Bigme does a really good job with ghosting-reduction. In some cases I think it's even better than BSR. - But especially the Bigme B751C (at least the one I bought) has a pretty dim frontlight. It's hard for me to recommend it because of that, because E-Ink Kaleido 3 pretty dark to begin with. The UI is also not as refined on Bigme devices. - Ghosting on the Boox Go Color 7 depends on the application. Scrolling on speed mode works well enough imho, it's just not as good as on Bigme or BSR. I'd recommend waiting for the Hibreak Color. That one will hopefully have a better frontlight than the B751C so it could be easier to recommend.

    Hi, nics video! Just one question, boox build in reader has this function of connecting and sync the books stored on google drive. Does Bigme have such feature as well? Or should i just play safe and go with Boox Go Color 7 even its without BSR (while this have something similar)?

  • @ChalidRaqami
    @ChalidRaqami7 күн бұрын

    Thanks! It's not directly integrated into the library, like on Boox, but they do have Google Drive available for a quick one-click download and installation from within the apps-drawer. So you'd need to handle the files through that app. You can also use other cloud apps and if that supports setting the Books-folder you can use it to directly sync to the library. So in short: No, but with extra steps you can sync files with the cloud.

  • @ChalidRaqami
    @ChalidRaqami7 күн бұрын

    Theoretically I'd say it's possible, because Bigme did something similar. But tbh I wouldn't count on it in the short term, because I suspect if that's something Boox is close to finish, they'd made it part of the launch.
