It's over: Kindle Oasis Discontinued. What's Next?

Ойын-сауық

Amazon’s former flagship ereader, the Kindle Oasis, seems to have turned its final page, as Amazon has just removed the model from the Kindle lineup overview on its website.
The Kindle Oasis is still one of my favorite ereaders because it manages to combine a great display with incredibly good ergonomics and an excellent build quality.
But the re-launch of the Kindle Paperwhite in 2021 with its larger screen and the color temperature adjustable frontlight, moved the cheaper sibling so close to the Oasis, that it was only a matter of time for Amazon to either update the Oasis or discontinue it.

The Kindle has to be the best ever piece of tech. Not in that it can do as much as other gadgets, but rather it fulfils its promise totally. I have the Oasis and I have no need to buy another e-reader for many years. And it’s so good at what it does.

Assuming, of course, that they quit giving necessary software updates, making the Oasis unusable. Most phones could last longer, but the phone manufacturers quit supporting them with software updates, eventually making them unable to run the current tech that apps are required to adhere to.

Kindle is tough for me at this point. For what the tech offers I am happy around $100-$150. Anything more expensive I’d just buy an iPad. In fact, I did. I grabbed an iPad mini with the pencil and case. Paper like screen protector basically made it feel like a kindle on steroids.

I really appreciate the shape and ergonomics of the Kindle Oasis, the navigation buttons truly make a difference. However, I'm a bit bothered by the battery life and the fact that it still uses a micro-USB connection. They could have updated that, I have no intention of switching to a Kindle Scribe.

The kindle scribe holds zero interest to me. It’s too big and clunky for what I want out of a kindle device, and its special features are something that my tablet already does better. What I liked about the Oasis was the physical buttons, because all of the kindles I’ve owned have given me grief with the page turning feature. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve clicked on the far right side of the page (nowhere near the center line where there could be any confusion) and had the book go backwards a page instead of forward… or clicked on the far left side only to have it go forward instead of back. Not to mention how often there is enough of a delay between tapping and response so that you think it didn’t register the tap, so you do it again, and then it goes forward multiple pages. However, I never bought an Oasis, because the jump in price was just way too big to justify for fixing that inconvenience… and I wasn’t sure I would like the altered body size that went with it (I never had a chance to physically hold and use an Oasis to compare the feel). If the price jump hadn’t been so dramatic, I most likely would have bought one.

Thanks for this. I love my Oasis and have been waiting for an update just to get USB-C. The darned Oasis is about the last piece of electronics I own that still requires the old mini-USB connector. I'd buy a new one just for that. I'd been looking at the Scribe, but after reviewing some videos on YT I can see that it's just too big. There's definitely a market for something in the 8" range-slightly larger than the current Paperwhite, but smaller than the Scribe, in the $200-250 price range. Hopefully we'll see it soon.

I was going to upgrade my 2013 PaperWhite to another one, and found the Boox. Page While I understand it won't last much past 5 years (or so Reddit and KZread research says), and whoo boy does it cost! I still ordered it. It just looks like the perfect device for my Kindle, Libby, ePub book, and PDF reading. The fact it can play KZread videos in eInk is an amusing novelty. It arrives tomorrow and I'm sure that I'll be using it while delivering literally hundreds of books to the second hand book store this coming weekend. (I am in the process of clearing up bookshelf and floor space by getting rid of decades of excess book accumulation. The new purchase is part of a project to replace them , for the most part, by an eReader and Libby.)

I’ve had nearly every version of the Kindle (No DX, Voyager, or Scribe). I’ve loved them all but the Oasis is my favorite. I have the first and the third generation. I use the third version daily and use the first version for when the third version battery finally dies. The scribe is too big and the Paperwhite is too small and doesn’t have page turn buttons. However, if I was buying a Kindle today, I would probably buy the newest Paperwhite. It’s a great value for the money.

    1. Still a shame that the Voyage was dropped. That was a great device, except for the uneven front light. 2. It was definitely time for the Oasis to be dropped, or replaced. The buttons were nice…. But, it was a battery hog, and had poor refresh. 3. I wouldn’t want to take notes on anything smaller than the Scribe. Which is why the iPad mini never appealed to me. 4. I’m going to be really upset if they come out with a new Scribe this year, which makes the one I just bought upsetting to own. Fingers crossed that doesn’t happen.

[0:00] 📚 Amazon discontinues the Kindle Oasis, possibly due to competition from the Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Scrip. [1:33] 💡 Despite its discontinuation, the Kindle Oasis remains a favorite e-reader for its unique features and design. [2:18] 📱 The Kindle Oasis underwent three generations, with improvements in display size, build quality, and front light technology. [2:54] 🤔 There's hope for a new 8-inch e-reader from Amazon to fill the gap between the Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Scrip.
