Procreate tutorials, digital art and tech for creative people.
Hi, I'm Jay - A digital designer and illustrator based in Sydney, Australia.
Jaywalker Pictures originally started as a travel photo blog called Jaywalking, a pun on my nickname and the idea of taking a walk to see the world. I then created this channel sharing my art, tutorials, stories and art journey - Thus Jaywalker Pictures was born.

You only need one tip to procreate
Sometimes my pencil doesn't feel the pressure right. For example, when hand pressure is too much, the lines are too thin, this problem occurs randomly. Could the pressure curve be related to my problem? I would be very grateful if you could help
Not sure it could be the brush you are using - try the hard round brush in airbrush section
I love this video I learned a lot! And comment section is full of golden nuggets
Thank you for watching!
Great video! Thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Your videos are very helpful, thank you! Please can you let me know the where I can find Canvas cheat sheet.
Thanks for watching! It’s available on my website jaywalkerpictures.com
Regarding the max layer part. I'm pretty sure you can move layers between artworks by holding them with one finger while navigating. This makes it easier if you are experimenting with several copies of a piece, and are confilicted with which changes to keep.
Is it tracing if I’m looking at art work and copying it lmao I’ve been doing that and getting better but now I don’t know lmao
I’m just learning about using Procreate and found your video - I can’t wait to try some of these - thank you!
Thank you for watching, enjoy learning Procreate!
Even when I use the standard brush curve settings, I can’t seem to get it to work. No matter how much pressure I place on my pen, the size of the brush stroke remains the exact same!!! :( does anyone know what I can do to fix this??
your website looks great! thanks for the video! good luck :)
Thank you Beth!
omg the canvas cheat sheet is a blessing, thank you so much!!!
Glad you like it!
Learning Procreate. EXCELLENT video! Thank you.
Thank you for watching
Amazing! I thought i wouldn’t be surprised by any of the tips and tricks Procreate video, but this one is really good! Particularly the Dynamic Brush and Recolour!
Thank you! Procreate always has something new to learn
Thanks for making these videos. I've been looking at getting the new iPad and Pencil Pro because Procreate looks so much fun to use. Your art is beautiful!
Thank you! It’s a wonderful hobby, especially with the portability combined with travel
Please I would like an honest answer. Which do you prefer. The m2 iPad Pro or the new one ? I would absolutely love a pro and con video comparison of your new iPad Pro and the old one. Honestly I think a video like that can get lots of views but also lots of people asking you more questions in the comments. These kind of videos are what a lot of people look for so much. Many many people are so indecisive about what iPad to get. People like to get advice and be told which iPad to go and purchase as many are confused. I hope you’ll give it some thought to make a video on your honest opinion between the iPads you have. Comparing the pros to one another. Comparing the new air and old air. Comparing all the models and the mini iPad you have
I only have the 2021 M1 (5th gen) - but if I were shopping now I would get the latest. Having said that, if u are on a budget the M2 is great and will serve your purpose for a long time.
This feature was a doozy for me. It has such a.....learning curve. He he he
I see what u did there 😉
That 1st tip is already a game changer
Can the reference be used with an external Monitor ?
Some good advice and a small missed point. The "drawing for X amount of time" is forcing you to "just do the thing". Second, Quantity over quality, when put into the correct context is very useful to improve. Your basketball story is a good example, but everyone needs to apply context, lessons, meaning, to their action. Just tossing a million basketballs at the hoop won't make you Pro if you don't apply some learning and analyzing. I am dealing with this and just about everything else you covered in this video. I'm 55 y/o, I haven't drawing any cartoons since 1987, but due to my health issues I decided to take up drawing again. I'm on Day 122 of this long journey. I used up all the Copic markers I had, then my fine liners, switched to colored pencils, and now on May 15th I purchased the new 11" Gen 6 iPad Air with the Pencil Pro and Procreate. In some ways I'm frustrated because it feels like I took a major step backwards. I was just starting to understand shading (see my profile photo) and now I have to learn Procreate. (brushes, layers, pressure, Apple Pencil functions, etc etc) Luckily for me, I'm doing this as a hobby, so I don't feel rushed, but at the same time I would like to turn out some art that doesn't look like a pre-schooler drew it.
Thanks for the thoughtful comment. You're right, quantity is important as long as with each iteration you're applying new lessons etc. My problem was just doing the thing because I was getting tired from the 30 day format. Maybe a better approach is to space things out, give more time to absorb lessons and apply. And yes I experienced the same thing jumping to Procreate. I thought I would be fine having a background in photoshop and digital, but no. Felt like a beginner again having to rebuild my skills. Keep at it, you will get over the hump eventually. I'll be doing more tutorials in future on this.
A quicker way of duplicate and merge is by exporting the canvas as jpeg or png, then on export options press 'copy', go back to the gallery, press +, and then clipboard
Ohh very interesting, thank you for the tip
I just stumbled on to your channel and missed on the free brushes by only a couple of years! 😂 In any case, hope your baby arrived safe and sound, your wife had a good delivery and y’all are doing well! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
Thank you for the kind words, wife and baby are doing great. Check out my website and mailing list to find out about future freebies and discounts. :)
Hi at 12:53 how to import the individual element/layer to the other canvas?
How to hide in procreate pocket please tell me
As someone who uses a comic-book style workflow, where I want to import line art without a background and color underneath it, the coolest trick I learned with Procreate was how to separate the blacks from a flat image (such as scanned pencils or inks) onto their own layer. This comes from Color with Kurt, by the way. You basically take your flat scanned image (black and white line art on a white background) and add a layer filled with black above it. Put a mask on the black layer. Copy the scanned image layer and then select the mask (with the color black). Paste (three finger swipe down and choose paste) into the mask, and then invert the mask. Flatten the mask and black layer and you'll have just the inks on an otherwise transparent layer.
The reason this is better than just making the inks layer a multiply layer is that sometimes we want to do a 'color hold' where we select part of the line art and make it a different color. For instance, we might want to make the line art around a character's face a skin tone, so it doesn't have such high contrast with the bounded color. With a multiply layer, we can't select the blacks cleanly to do this.
Interesting, thank you for the detailed tip! I’ll give it a try, might make it into the next tips video.
This sounds really interesting… I’d like to see it in action! It sounds like it would be something to watch and learn for me, anyway.
When I was in art college we had a guest come in who did environmental drawings and he had pictures of this big wooden rig he set up in his studio using rulers and chalk lines to get the right perspectives without having to put too much thought into it. The perspective grid is just another tool that has been innovated for digital use. I mean I don't wanna snap a chalk line across my ipad screen. 😅
OMG... It's a meee!!! (Jim Mulvaney) 😁Thank you for the free pdf, It will definitely come in handy. I love how helpful the art community can be sometimes.
Haha thank u for the tip!
Wow Thank you so much! God bless <3
No problem 😊
You cannot compare procreate and photoshop... doesn't make any sense. Two very different softwares that does very different things.
Wow. Tip #10 will be so helpful. Thank-you!
Glad it helped, thank you for watching!
Copy/paste - is that not just the same as duplicating a layer? Which takes two actions?
You’re right - going to have to redo the video 🤦
@@jaywalkerpictures oh no!! 🥲
Love some of these tips, will definitely come in handy… for the first one on this video though, you can also swipe down with 3 fingers and “copy all” then paste, et voila, same thing as copy canvas, maybe a little faster in case your menu isn’t already on the “add” tab 😜
Great point! Much easier than going to the top menu
#9 You can also continue recoloring more areas by pressing the small “continue” button that appears at the top. Then select the next area, and switch to a different color from the swatch, if you like, or adjust the threshold again by moving left or right on the canvas. And then select the next area, and so on.
Wow I gotta try that. Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for the canvas guide, super helpful dude 🤙
Thank you!
Number 8: You can also swipe your layer to the left and select Duplicate.
Ohh yeah that would be 3 steps, pretty good option
oh heck yeah, thank you for the videos and thank you viewers for the dope comments. the slider fine-tuning blew my mind!
Yes, thank you guys watching for the tips and tricks!
4:59 Is there a reason why like…everyone uses the circle color selector? I use what’s called ‘Classic’ in Procreate because I feel I can get pure black and white easier and just in general see what exactly I’m adjusting better. However, EVERYONE (and I mean literally everyone) else I see online and in real life uses this circle. Am I doing something wrong? Is there something I’m missing? Should I switch?
I work with the wheel for a while because that's what I saw everyone use, but I have swicht to the "classic". Just comenting to let you know that you are not alone in this.
You're not missing out. Circle is just the default, but yeah I (and many of us) should try using the classic instead
When trying to copy and paste between 2 different canvases, the copied element is pasted in a smaller size, even if both canvases are the same size and resolution. Do you know why this happens and how to fix it?
That hasn't happened to me, will give it a try
i think dynamic brush scaling may have just changed my life 😭 i've been messing with the scale of brushes for ages down to changing the minimum sizes on a bunch of brushes. so glad there's a work around
So happy it helps, thanks for watching!
That slider trick is genius
I know right?
Damn, I didn't know that merge all layers and expand color wheel. This is very helpful 😃
Glad it helps!
Omigod. Fantastic tips!Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Another tips for easier switch between brush, smudge and eraser. 1. Double tap your apple pen to change between brush and the eraser. 2. Turn on the gesture touch on the smudge, so every time you smudge the screen you’ll smudge your drawing carefull This help me a lot to faster switching between thoose tools
Thanks for the tips!
ipad size please
12.9 inch
I hope for an update that brings features from ProCreate Dreams to Procreate. As long as ProCreate crops the content of a layer as soon as I move the image outside the border I will not use the software.
That one frustrates me, too.
That’d be a nice addition
I just started using procreate and found both your videos really helpful. Thx
Glad it was helpful!
That procreate canvas cheat sheet is amazing!
Thanks for the feedback!
Thank you!
Welcome!
Thanks. Getting my first iPad this week just for art so I'm binging these videos
Exciting, enjoy the iPad :)
Same
omg iv been using procreate for years i completely forgot about the copy canvas and paste thank you thank you sm ❤
Happy to help 😊
