Thanks. Very sound advice. Especially the last point. If I used the same number of hours that I watched advice on KZread on actual practice - I’d be an expert by now. Thanks

That last bit of advice hit home for me. With both art and learning guitar, I do this. If I had picked up my guitar all the times I watched videos about playing guitar...

Thank you so much for your videos. This put things in perspective for me. I stopped drawing years ago. I have always loved art but the idea of doing something with my art was never supported so I looked at it as nothing more than a useless talent. Now, years after starting a family and getting caught up in the rat race, I want to do something I love and allow myself the opportunity to see where it takes me. I feel stuck but this video has shifted my perspective. Thank you for sharing your experience and advice.

Will you please consider doing a video on the best hardware to use for digital art? I saw your video on which software to use but I’m thinking of buying an ipad with stylus to start. Will i need a laptop or desktop at all? I have a macbook and apple desktop but theyre old and very slow.

If you’re a hobbyist I think iPad Pro 12.9 inch is good but will keep in mind for a future video!

Lets Go!!!!! I think unpolished stuff is not a big problem. It sometimes more engaging if its less fleshed out. Like characters in the Harry Potter series haha. :D And a lot of the times to get your point across some lines or color is enough. Everything + is for atmosphere, and logetevity of the piece. I think your art is amazing. You could make a movie, or animated short with this style, it would be a success i think. Or even a videogame! Or a book! A 30 day challange is indeed an artificial "chore". I failed so many times with these. (mostly with pushups, or 3d art etc) but when you actually build something, a big project, you can go on, and on.

You totally get it. There were a few pieces I loved the idea but could only get to a decent level of polish. 30 days challenges still have some benefits but to say they are life changing is questionable. Thanks for watching!

Good to have you back, I have also been going through similar experiences with making a comic. I finished writing a while ago, but was stuck with what to do during the design process, since I haven’t drawn for about a year. The zombie advice is really good. But something that helped me find a little more enjoyment and guidance. Was going back to things that made me peruse art in the first place, which was animation. I may have gone mad, but I am considering making my comic into an animation instead.

Thanks for sharing - yeah it's easy to forget what inspired us in the first place, revisiting that can be a real boost. Nice advice and good luck with your comic/animation :)

Some good advice and a small missed point. The "drawing for X amount of time" is forcing you to "just do the thing". Second, Quantity over quality, when put into the correct context is very useful to improve. Your basketball story is a good example, but everyone needs to apply context, lessons, meaning, to their action. Just tossing a million basketballs at the hoop won't make you Pro if you don't apply some learning and analyzing. I am dealing with this and just about everything else you covered in this video. I'm 55 y/o, I haven't drawing any cartoons since 1987, but due to my health issues I decided to take up drawing again. I'm on Day 122 of this long journey. I used up all the Copic markers I had, then my fine liners, switched to colored pencils, and now on May 15th I purchased the new 11" Gen 6 iPad Air with the Pencil Pro and Procreate. In some ways I'm frustrated because it feels like I took a major step backwards. I was just starting to understand shading (see my profile photo) and now I have to learn Procreate. (brushes, layers, pressure, Apple Pencil functions, etc etc) Luckily for me, I'm doing this as a hobby, so I don't feel rushed, but at the same time I would like to turn out some art that doesn't look like a pre-schooler drew it.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment. You're right, quantity is important as long as with each iteration you're applying new lessons etc. My problem was just doing the thing because I was getting tired from the 30 day format. Maybe a better approach is to space things out, give more time to absorb lessons and apply. And yes I experienced the same thing jumping to Procreate. I thought I would be fine having a background in photoshop and digital, but no. Felt like a beginner again having to rebuild my skills. Keep at it, you will get over the hump eventually. I'll be doing more tutorials in future on this.

Doing this is great to push yourself, but if you do take on a drawing challenge make sure with each drawing you’re really applying your learnings. I fell into the trap of churning out drawings to meet the challenge timeline which defeated the whole purpose of improving. Thank you for watching 😊

The thing that always stood out to me about your art is your strong eye for color and composition. I am not sure what to say about you wanting to change your art style, when the initial video that popped into my feed (years ago) is your video 'How I found my art style'. As for procrastinating, what are you doing instead of art when you are procrastinating? Just cat videos? Those two points lead me to believe you may have something you like more than art.. and you don't really want to be doing art?

Thanks for watching. You’re right, I do have two other passions, (one is making videos). But the other is completely unrelated to art so not sure if I should go into it on this channel
