Captain Steve Taft is a third generation sportfishing captain who has been on the water his whole life. He runs The Legend, a 75' sportfishing boat, 200 days out of the year. He specializes in catching pelagic species such as bluefin and yellowfin tuna, yellowtail, and dorado.
Catalina (Cat) has been fishing with her dad since she was a little girl. Having grown up on a sailboat, the water always has felt like home to her. She learned how to fish the islands (mostly Catalina and Clemente) from a young age. She has been tuna fishing out of San Diego for over 10 years and loves to throw poke parties for her friends.

Killed albacore on that boat. It almost sank years ago, hit huge driftwood i beleive? I also think they where at todos santos. Sean Trowbridge killed it. Bulldog
Great video! Went on a 3 day couple weeks ago. My son got a180 lb BFT and 2 smaller models. On our hundred pound night jig rigs we used 100 feet of mono tied to braid with 200 lb. bite leader. I noticed several anglers tying short bite leader direct to braid. My son got cut off twice by braid rubbing on his mono top-shot. What do you think?
Yet another great vid. Great drone footage, great tips and great fishing! Keep em' coming!
Please explain how these tungsten jigs can be through wire? Tungsten melts at 6,000 degrees and steel melts at 2,500.
Magic
None of them are through wire, that I know of anyway!
Awesome video thanks for posting this. I think in this video for the proteus rod you’re using the tuna special. Does the regular PTB70XXHF have the same power and can be used for an 80-100 lb setup ? Thanks !
Nate looked just like a side hooked tuna!

How can you tell if the torpedo sinker is through wire or not?
@@roaddog9222 really the only way is if they are sold or advertised as “through wire.” If it’s not specified, I would assume they are not. It’s more expensive to produce & generally not needed unless it’s this specific set up. That being said, you can always rig up a line in between the top & bottom tackle points so even if the sinker breaks away, you’ll still have your hooks and line on the connection to your top shot.
Thank you fir that information.
@@roaddog9222 happy to help!!
That’s kool to see 👍🫡

Would fish this boat more often if they didn’t allow Mako sharks to go home with the anglers. Fisherman complain about the seals. But want to take home sharks. Make it make sense
@@ducksgo we always push anglers to release makos. But if an angler wants to boat it, we will do what our customers request.

I love your videos and wish I could have gotten on your boat but I'm going to have to settle for your sister ship Excalibur in about a month. Wow, big and mean. What is the best way to avoid loosing the fish when it goes under the boat and the line rubs against the edge
Actually wanting to land it. He looked like he couldn’t care less about losing the fish. I fished the Legend a few weeks ago and had my 170 come off with 2 gaffs in the head. I free spooled and Matt said noooo, we dropped it! I was still in low and the fish dug under the boat. I only put about 25 pounds of drag when I put it back in gear. I run 33 lbs at strike. I leaned over the rail and put my rod tip in the water (UC VIPER) and pulled!! Got the fishes head turned back and settled in for another 90 seconds of battle before it was gaffed again. Not the crews fault, fish was hot!!
@@ahmadghanem2414 pointing the rod tip down basically where the boat & the water meet to reduce the chances of it rubbing against the boat is your best bet! But it’s especially a tough spot at the stern where it could get caught in the sonar, rudder, prop, etc. Just gotta stay extra vigilant at the stern!
@@1hotahi964 saying he didn’t want to land the fish is pretty harsh. This was during an open bite of 80+ pound fish. You’d be tired too. We’re glad you landed your fish and had a good time on your recent trip!
@@FishTheLegendif we are talking about 9:06 sorry but he could’ve leaned his body and that rod over the side with a lil more effort. Im no pro but I know enough to get me in trouble! 🎉

@@timmiller3133 it was action packed!
The drone shot showing the jig swimming back is cool!
Thank you!!
when i have fast jigged before, my bottom hooks get caught on my line, how do i prevent that?
@@lukesuder1260 Generally in that case you’re over pumping your jig. You probably pumped too hard and didn’t pick up enough slack in the line thus blowing out your jig. Shorter pumps and more speed should fix it!
One day I’m going to make it to California to get them yellowfin and bluefin tunas.
@@Bigfish1day come on over! Would love to have ya out!
What model graphtech would be best for a 80 pound knife jig/sinker rig setup? Dose the 80-100 model have enough backbone to catch bft up to 200? Or should I add an x?
@@socalfishincrew5410 It definitely does, though an extra x would work too!
Good video. I just stumbled on it. Appreciate the lessons. I have a newbie question: Does it matter as far as light conditions whether a jig would be appropriate vs live bait? I have heard from a few that jigs are more effective in sunny/brighter conditions once the fog lifts. Again, good tutorials!
@@spottedbaybass619 Good question! Here’s what Danny said: In my experience weather the sun is out or if it’s overcast it doesn’t really matter. The key is watching what the fish are doing and if the current is running and if the water is somewhat clean and warm. Also you as the angler have to make your jig swim in a manner appealing to the fish. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Sean Trowbridge used to kill the albacore on that boat moons ago
Anyone know what kind of left handed reel that was around 2:55?
This is ridiculously awesome.

Very helpful video. Thanks!
@@noelconklin5916 glad you liked it!
Just curious… with that many big fish being tight at one time, approx how long was it taking to get each fish over the rail?
@@Deepimpactocean there’s really no average, just depends on the angler, gear, and the way the hook is set. A good range is probably 10-45 minutes, with exceptions.
