    I hope everyone seeing this video is smart enough to understand that saying “spiciest plant” is not a reference to food, seasoning or edibility… _Euphorbia resinifera_ is none of those! Haha! It’s more of a figure-of-speech!! 🤣…and really, it’s not even a case of being spicy- it’s downright TOXIC FIRE. Most of the Euphorbiaceae family won’t outright KILL a person, unless you’re allergic, but how many people know they’re allergic to euphorbs (spurges)? For some odd reason, my cousin didn’t know what euphorbias were, yet he and a friend were doing a gardening job-pruning a huge massive thicket of Euphorbia! All without gloves, no shirts, wearing shorts, in the summertime… they pruned a whole stand of fire-sticks (aka _Euphorbia tirucalli_ or milkbush, pencil cactus, etc.) way too casually and paid for it… and while they may not have died, a hospital trip was in the cards, along with a massive skin reaction, pain, and blistering… it’s equivalent to being burned.. you could also develop potential sensory depletion or even a complete “numbing” of certain senses, depending on which mucous membranes you get the sap on (mouth, eyes, nose, ears, genitals)… the jury’s out on this one… Potentially life-threatening, at its worst, and life-altering at best. And that could mean anything!! 🤷🏼‍♂😉

  • @rockyfern

    Oh man! You are absolutely right. Absolutely a figure of speech, albeit a dangerous one. That is crazy that even external exposure has such a fierce reaction. Thank you for sharing, that is crazy!

    I forgot to say, Sydney Plant Guy sent me some time ago. Glad your channel growing. I notice recently that some sansevieria were reclassified as Dracaena and was wondering if it was all sansevieria if you know? And how long ago did this happen?

  • @rockyfern
    @rockyfern2 ай бұрын

    I think there is a lot of debate on this still. From what I have seen, there is still a divide between the reclassification. I believe is within the last handful of years that this has been proposed, but yes it would be for the entire genus, would be my guess.

    Cacti have spines that are in a circle, and glochids, that’s how you know.

  • @erikm8372
    @erikm83722 ай бұрын

    @@TheC3. Right, cacti spines grow from “areoles”, as well, compared to the permanent, hard structures of euphorbias, such as the ones seen in the video, or the giant _Euphorbia ingens_ or _ammak_ (candelabra trees). I like to compare cactus spines to deer antlers, and all other succulents with THORNS to rhino or antelope horns. Antlers/spines grow seasonally, fall out, and regenerate from areoles; meanwhile horns/thorns are permanent, bony structures (or keratin, lol) growing from the actual plant core or animal’s bones. Also, you can tell because the cactus family (Cactaceae) are 99% New World species-minus one from Africa-& most of the “weird”-looking Euphorbias are Old World plants, mainly from Madagascar, South Africa, the Arabian Peninsula & India. Cacti are basically all American, from the more desert species like _Mammillaria_ (pincushions), _Opuntia_ (prickly pears) & _Echinocactus grusonii_ (golden barrel), to the tropical _Schlumbergera_ (Xmas cactus) & _Rhipsalis_ in the Amazon and eastern Brazil, _Epiphyllum_ (orchid cactus) in Mexico, to _Trichocereus_ (San Pedro cactus) and _Cereus azureus_ (Brazilian blue torch).

    I'm a new Hoya parent, started with 2 hoyas last year just to try my hands on them. I got 1" cuttings of the Compacta and Krinkle 8 which has successfully grown over a foot long and had 3 peduncles each for 12 months. So last month I just keep going to plant nurseries and big box stores to check on hoyas. Since then I've acquired a dozen more, repotted them to a more orchid loving soil with some potting soil, perlite, and bark and few charcoals...it's just been 2-3 months with these new acquisitions and maybe a hundred KZread videos from all of you...I think I'm in the right direction...but my husband complain about more fungus gnats around...I guess the more plants we have, the more gnats we get. I had a mealy bugs experience and unlike you other plant parents, I only try 3 times to rehab those specific plants, then after the 3rd time, sadly when mealy bugs come back after treating them and isolating them and changing their soil, I need to let them go....I don't want 70 of my plants to get infected with them. So I know this is hard to hear but when we get out of control with the number of plants we care, my husband and I think we need to limit our crazy collections 😢😢 to go further....thankfully houseplants are somewhat shortlived, so when one dies we have the opportunity to experience a new one. My outdoor garden has over 120 varieties of winter hardy plants...it has been fun growing them for 35 yrs but now need to slow down...we also need to love different hobbies and new things to learn....I cannot imagine some ppl have 600-800 houseplants! That's over the top!😂 But I guess that's what makes ppl happy....better happy than sad😊

  • @rockyfern

    WOW! Thank you for the love! I would so much enjoy seeing your outdoor garden! I bet it's amazing! As far as fungal gnats go, the product that works for me the best is 'Mosquito bits'. I've really only ever needed to apply it once! It's a bacteria that targets the larvae and honestly I couldn't say enough good things about it! I will say that having a ton of Pinguiculas has helped a ton too lol. My issue is fruit flies! Mealy bugs are horrible, I will say that I don't switch out my soil or isolate, but that's what has worked for me. I know other plant keepers that have to or they will overtake the collection. I think my success has been from weekly spray downs of neem oil/ Castile soap and a systemic granular. I really enjoyed reading this comment, It is the longest I've ever received and it made me smile! Good luck with your Hoyas! I'd love to see some pics!

    Thanks for watching and asking a great question. Where are you located? More importantly, what are your ambient conditions? I find this begonia to like consistency. Temps:75-85 and regular watering without being too damp and 60% humidity. I have lost 1 or 2 props but I think that was down to too much water with all the rain we got.
