Clearly russia is trying to stretch Ukraine. While they are strong and Ukraine is weak. The problem for Russia is better they do the more support Ukraine is likely to get from the West. Remember it was the intelligence briefing to the speaker that Ukraine was struggling which conviced him to allow the vote. I think its wishful thinking on russia behalve that they belive the west will allow them to win in Ukraine.
