    Thanks for this trip down memory lane. I studied at Ealing Technical College in the early 70s and used to regularly travel home for the weekend, starting on the 65 from Ealing to Surbiton station. Cost; 10p! Sometimes friends and I would go out on Saturday to Chessington Zoo, thus doing the whole route. In those days there was a cap on the fare of 12p, so that was the price, as long as you didn't change bus. What value for a bus trip of well over an hour.

    Since my earlier reply, I now see what you are getting at - ads in the middle of the video! I am struggling to see if there is a way to get rid of them - I certainly didn't ask for them, and it seems to be a new phenomenon. Even if I was getting paid for the ads I don't think I would want them. If you know how to get rid of them, your advice would be most welcome!

    About 1000 tons as an average tonnage the 59 Class Garrett locomotive was supposed to pull -/ haul on the EAR&H small Guage railway lines and could go to haul up to about 2000 tons on the metre wide Guage Railway line

    How fantastic to hear from you! 5918, along with two other steam locomotives (3020 and 2409) remain, as far as we know, in the works at Nairobi in near working order, and we hope that we will once again, soon, be able to negotiate a contract with KR to run more railtours with them, as we have done in the past. Meanwhile, however, there have been disturbing reports that some locomotives from the Nairobi Museum - such as 5930 - have been moved to a site in Uhuru Gardens. When asked about this, KR Management and even the Curator of the Museum, have been silent. Do you actually live in Nairobi? If so, are you able to throw more light on these rumours?

    Kirpal Singh Sandhu, the driver of the 5918 Mount Gelai giant steam locomotive, is a legend in the mind of those boys who grew up in Kenya in the 1960s & 1970s. It was every boy’s dream to drive that titanic machine which thundered past and recreated the romance of steam train. Long live Mount Gelai loco which has pride of place in the Nairobi Railway Museum, alas now silenced but yet capable of bringing those childhood memories alive 🙏🙏🙏

  • @vckallen
    @vckallen2 жыл бұрын

    Dear Mr Shah Thank you very much for your kind comments. As far as we know, "Mount Gelai" together with 3020 and 2409 - which are the three potential operational steam locomotives, subject to some fairly substantial repairs, are in No. 6 shed in the main works at Nairobi, and are safely stored there. However there have been some worrying reports in the last few months that other locomotives, previously in the open-air museum adjacent to the main station in Nairobi, and including Garratt 5930, have been moved to a new site at Uhuru Gardens. It would be very useful to know if these exhibits are safe, and that they have not been quietly sold to a scrap merchant! as has happened in some countries. I am guessing you are actually in Kenya, so if you have any information we would greatly welcome your advice on [email protected] Vic Allen
