This is probably the quintessential McKuen song, and this video captures the gentle intimacy he always wrote and sang about in everything he produced. This recorded version from After Midnight puts you in a front row table next to the piano. And I can imagine Rod, were he still with us, would use this artist, this friend, A Warm Place, to make videos for him on his website A Safe Place To Land. Like Rod, he’s very sensitive and very sensual. Great job.

Fortunately, this only happened to me once in my life. Finding a love that lasted 40 years with someone who accepted me and loved me for who I was, faults and all. I KNOW what it is like to be loved. I know what it is like to LOVE. Not everyone we think we love is the RIGHT one. Especially when we are young.

Once in a while one of these videos makes me rediscover a McKuen song and the event surprises the hell out of me. The pictures renew and even re-energize the whole experience of listening. The surprise: this is such a confident, aggressive melody its hard to understand why it wasn't a popular hit. And the words tell you what kind of marvelous writer McKuen is with phrases like "My address will be the other side of sorrow." The melody is like a charging train, as this cheeky rider boisterously proclaims: "Is it any wonder a man like me puts his luck in locomotives that go racing to the sea?" Thanks for this great experience, the discovery of a new way to hear music!!

The first (and only) time I heard this song was on a Tom Jones album (early 70s). Went looking for versions of it today and found Frank Sinatra and Tom, and both of them left out the Houston verse. Then I found a McKuen version and he left both of those out and put only the Houston verse. Then I found this and he left out the Denver verse. I love them ALL. I hear variations in the words but they all amount to the same thing. Thank you for posting - this. I'm not sure his Houston version was all the same lyrics in the verse because he was fooling with his dog. .

My first McKuen album in 1969, a gift to my first crush. I too remember it all, especially the intensity of young love before hurt and cynicism. This video is exceptional, and make no mistake, this is exactly what McKuen was talking about. The yearning for love is in all of us, and we never lose it.

What a marvelously calm, intimate recording that sounds like you're sitting next to the piano. Added immeasurably to it are the intimate pictures and the ambiance of people who love each other. The thrill of the moment and the compelling happiness of engagement are memories every lover has or regrets losing. This is why McKuen was so internationally beloved: he spoke the universal language that knows no borders.

When I was 19, this was how it was. Too young, too naive to understand love. Not yet a man. I appreciated every bit of tenderness and attention. Finding Rod in 1968 at the age of 22, he guided me through my manhood. I learned it was ok to love love. To take in and appreciate every gift given. Knowing oneself and loving who you are is what makes it all work. "Thank you, all you one nighters and weekenders that I thought I was in love with." You gave me experience and trust in myself. In 1977 when I was 32, I found someone that stayed. For 40 years . They passed away in 2017. For 40 years I said "Thank you" for another special morning. Thank you for an even better day. Thank you very much because you stayed".......

Who hasn't experienced this in their life. Young love, old friends, even family. Life brings people in and out of our lives. Sometimes, for a purpose. Sometimes , you are even reunited again. People do change. You may not fit in their requirements at one part of their lives. You too, may require new or different people to be in your life. People change. Even you......

Rod always seemed to capture "us". Maybe a different city, a different beach, but the same experiences going through life when you're young and searching. To be aware of everything around you is how you feel life. The places, the books, the people. It's all about our lives....

It's exactly how I now feel. When I first found Rod, it was 1968, and I was 23. Recently, I caught a reflection of myself coming out of the shower. I thought, "Who is that? That can't be right!" Well, it was. IT was me. Where did that young muscled Italian go ? I lived a wonderful life. I loved and was loved by the most wonderful person in my life for 40 years until they passed away in 2017. I did almost everything I ever wanted to do. I just wish I knew then what I know now about life. In a week, I'll be 79. I don't want to look in the mirror anymore. I want to remember my youth and how I once lived.......and loved.

This is the one that did it for me. For decades I followed McKuen, seeing concerts, buying records and books. I thought that was all there was; I thought I knew this renaissance man who reached into parts of me I hadn't found myself. Along the way we heard the critics who thought he was too sentimental, and maybe we agreed because his gentle longing felt like a guilty pleasure. But this song, more than any of the romantic songs of the past, got inside of the lover, got inside of me, and spoke the same words I had felt and lived. I had been this lover since I was about 10 seeking to understand myself and the world. We all are this lover.

This haunting version of the song by Rod himself, and these pictures of distressed hearts, remind me how emotionally treacherous the time of seeking love truly was and is. In many ways we never escape it, this constant contest of people and relationships. A Warm Place really knows how to articulate what the heart feels and McKuen narrates. Do sad songs depress us further, or do they fill us with compassion and fellowship? I would argue the latter. We yearn for love.

Rod McKeun originally wrote this for the film “Lisa Bright And Dark” which was a television movie of the week for NBC in 1973 and was one of the first films that I’m aware of that dealt with the subject of mental illness in a way that was not derisive. You can hear a demo of “Miles To Go” over the films opening titles. I say demo because on the film’s soundtrack which was never released commercially (a few promo copies exist) there is a different version of the song than the one heard in this video where McKeun is still working the tune. Lead actress Kay Lenz also takes a stab at the song as well with her version being titled “Interrupted Lullaby” on the soundtrack.
