It was appeared on numerous greatest hits albums, and covered by Glen Yarbrough on his album “The Lonely Things.” A variation of this song was also done called “Stanyan Street Revisited.” Rods experiences associated with Stanyan Street in San Francisco were so significant to him that it was the title of a book, poems, and eventually became the name of his record label.

This is the one that did it for me. For decades I followed McKuen, seeing concerts, buying records and books. I thought that was all there was; I thought I knew this renaissance man who reached into parts of me I hadn't found myself. Along the way we heard the critics who thought he was too sentimental, and maybe we agreed because his gentle longing felt like a guilty pleasure. But this song, more than any of the romantic songs of the past, got inside of the lover, got inside of me, and spoke the same words I had felt and lived. I had been this lover since I was about 10 seeking to understand myself and the world. We all are this lover.

This is one of my very favorite songs...and video's. It "hooked" me on Rod as a teenager. The last lines are so moving....
