Back in the 60s with so much musical creativity coming from every direction, I remember two songs that seemed entirely new to my ear. One was If You Go Away sung by Damita Jo, written by Jacques Brel with English lyrics by this man, Rod McKuen. Had we ever heard anything so deadly, sung in the ultra dramatic French chanson style? Later by accident I heard this song, It's Raining, on McKuen’s Listen to the Warm LP. Everything was refreshingly new on that album, but It’s Raining that jumps out at you. Had McKuen invented a new musical template? Yes, but not exactly. I barely remembered beatnik existential drama from the late 50s and early 60s that put poetry to atonal, shock instrumentation. McKuen seems to have placed emotional beatnik poetry into lush Sinatra orchestral settings and created a new variant. Most audiences today likely don't remember Sinatra as the tender, broken hearted singer he was in the 50s, but his soft spoken musical expressions of intimacy were not lost on McKuen. He found ways to be sincere and intimate that even Sinatra never tried. And wow, did it speak to millions of young people all over the world, but especially in Europe and Australia. America wasn’t far behind, but critics seemingly have to attack someone who sells millions and millions of books, calling McKuen “a popcorn poet”. Fans didn’t care but McKuen wasn’t able to hit the music charts in the USA like he did in the rest of the world. But who cares? Those of us who found him were beatniks of another stripe and most have been amazingly devoted to him for almost 60 years. Welcome to the Warm.
