I love the Stormlight and never read Mistborn; I guess one day! I'm actually hoping to get into Wilson's novella soon, it's definitely a promising series. ANd Janny Wurts' series, I have the audiobook but honestly don't have time to get into another long series. Great recs, thanks for sharing!

I'm in the middle of Stormlight, The Wheel of Time and now this. (Also, I'll try MALAZAN soon) Send help!

First of all, mad respect for filming this in the scorching heat... sending all the cool vibes your way this summer 🥲❤ Thanks for all these summer recs, so many books I had never heard of before. Though yes, thanks for the loving kick in the butt with JDL Rosell, I really need to get back to his works!! Also, really great SPFBOX review once again, you are so good at pointing out the highs and lows of a book, which makes it so easy to gauge whether the book will be the right fit for me. Give yourself a pat on the back for that ;) Happy reading, Abel 🤩

Thank you Esmay, it is always great to read your comments 🔥 I suffered so damn much to record this video (and edit it). I even tried to shorten it but it ended up being a 50 minute behemoth 😸 I survived, though! Yay me! In any case, I am proud to dispense ass-kicking in Josiah's name. This man deserves ALL the READERS in the world! I am glad you are enjoying my reviews. Indeed, it is often a challenge. You had me looking up “Alliance Rising”. I’ve got a few Cherryh books, but I’ve not read any in a decade or more, I would imagine. Curious to hear about a new(er) series. I’ve been reading Marko Kloos for a few years now. I would read his completed “Frontlines” series before “Frontlines: Evolution”. I’ve only read the first two “Palladium Wars” books so far, but I have much enjoyed his Military SF over the past many years.

Yes, I've found a complete reading order for Cherryh's books and it is pretty daunting 😁😁😁 But I'll definitely start with this one, even if I failed to mention that it's co-authored. I've seen some books from Kloos around in the last couple of years but I didn't know he had a substantial back catalogue and that makes his work even more interesting to me 😂 Thank you for watching!

Ah Abel, wanted to give you a hug while you were discussing that line about (that character). I'm sorry for whatever you may be going through in your life right now, but knowing some of my words may have helped ease even a little of the pain gives me warmth. I wrote that ending because it was how my third grade teacher passed away when I was a kid. She was the first person I had ever experienced death with, and I had a hard time coming to terms with the finality of it all. In the end, I had told myself that line, and gave it a sense of bittersweet beauty that I feel passing on deserves. To know her effect on me has effected others is sort of a beautiful thought. Thank you for sharing all your kind words and for being there since the begining.

  • @bookswithabel

Thank you Tom. The words you wrote about (that character) and the way she passed away made me think a lot. There are a thousand ways to lose someone we love, but inexorable old age can be especially cruel, especially if their mind slowly but surely shuts down before the rest of their body. I will hold those words close to my heart, because for me they represent hope. Thank you for everything.

Great video Abel! So many great sounding books that I hadn’t heard of before. Hopefully you continue to have a wonderful reading year. Do you have any indie author recommendations with prose similar to Robin Hobb, Susana Clarke, or Tad Williams? I’m not sure if you’ve read them or not. Enjoy the rest of your day!

Thank you for watching! Haven't read anything from Clarke, and just read only a couple of chapters from The Dragonbone Chair in Italian (ugly translation, stopped and waiting to read it in English). I've been told that The Way of Dean by Philip Chase has a great epic scope that could be assimilated to the great classic by Williams. I don't know how correct that statement is, but the first book is really strong. Still haven't read an indie book that could be compared to what Hobb achieved, but I'll ask around. I'm pretty sure we'll find at least some authors inspired by her overall goals and prose and books given how influential she is 👀
