Do I expect an honest review when your only goal is to make videos for money? No! I wait for all of the other youtubers to call BS. Just like the overheating issues on the Canon R5. Everybody was pushing the comments that you would have to be crazy to video more than 30 minutes on a camera. We all know how that went when the complaints started showing up and Canon exposed! You have the camera in your hands for a time limit and expect to test and review each function? Raw files that can't be opened with software for review? Preproduction cameras that may not be the final version is what they say. These trips are only for hype and to get everybody aboard the money train. When the Canon R5II comes out, take time to fully explore the issues from the past version and make a comparison. I'm interested in that review and how detailed of an analysis is presented. I would value a true brutally honest review given without any bias. And yes, I own a R5 and mainly use it for photography. However, the video is awesome with the firmware update. I own all 3 major brands, and they all play the same game! I have borrowed equipment to test for myself before purchasing. It pays to wait sometimes to let the wrinkles get ironed out before spending that cash...............

Of course you have bias if they send you to Hawaii or somewhere cool. As far as leaks from Sony it doesnt matter it still takes 3to 4 years before you actually get the camera.

The banning issue is inane. The people that want cameras want to know about the good and the bad; trade offs between the bad of the platforms is part of the decision process. They each have serious strengths and unfortunately glaring weaknesses. Any reviewer skipping the bad is foolish and won't be taken seriously by serious people. Lets be honest here, a significant and some say growing segment don't even know what they need to know, much less care. Personally, I think the legacy giants are taking notes on Chinese crowd source product development and shady marketing and it will not end well.

Events cost a small fortune to bring people to, so one can easily understand why getting banned is a logical (or at least not an evil ) decision. If a KZread creator is banned and wants to review a product for their channel they still can. Viewers always put more faith in reviews when they are paid for by the creator or at least a third party. Speaking for myself I am clearly aware that sponsored events are clearly direct advertising by the brand. They control the entire event and use and do not allow sharing of files, clearly a biased process. Events help to get a sense of the product, but the real reviews will tell the story soon enough.

This is probably a genius move of Panasonic. Maybe inadvertently. Huge hype and controversy and everyone is talking about Panasonic who do in fact make some brilliant cameras but they seem to underdogs, probably due to bad autofocus which they have now fixed. It also makes people think about all these reviewers which seem to not really pay as much attention to Panasonic over some of the other manufacturers. I think the S9 has some cool properties. Panasonic's IBIS is brilliant. It's full frame so quality of video and photos will be high. The LUTS make it easy for non technical people to create looks. People will be able to easily create great looking photos and videos with this camera that would have been much harder a few years ago.

Does putting out a review early help a KZread Channel? YES. Do some companies shadow ban reviewers for negative reviews? YES. Does this position which reviewers are put in incentivize *some* reviewers to be carful about what they say (depending on how established that reviewer is)? YES -Gerald recognizes this as in issue that "needs to change," its really not controversial imo 😉

Would think the Companies would welcome serious discussions to consider what needs to be developed not based on trend, but Lasting improvement. They seem to make some while removing festures so they are never all included in a Perfect line. Too much ass kissing going on. Certain New Cams Could be Bedrock like the Nikon F was for years, For higher prices are the new getting that much better?

The absolute first thing that should be included in the review is THE PRICE. If your budget is $1000 no point in you watching 2/3 of the way through a video only to find the item is $5,000. On the other hand, if you're just interested in the 'thing' and have no intention of buying, putting the price first isn't an issue.

I’d rather you go and give an early review. Then you can make a follow-up brief review if there any changes. I’m not the type of person who will complain if there is an update with different conclusions later on because of changes from preproduction to actual production, or anything else. You two have always been honest straight shooters. That’s why I subscribe to your channel.

I read a good book about AI and the problem described in detail by the author, and mentioned here, and many other places, is that our social structure is not ready for AI. Social structure includes laws and ethics and even such things as courtesy - the whole mess that keeps our society going. Sadly, it is breaking down anyway with constant attacks on our institutions such as elections and the judicial system and belief in science. AI is going to make it much worse by undermining the very notion of what is true. Even Musk is warning AI is coming for all our jobs. Think of the cutural change necessaryt to break the padadigm that in order to eat, have shelter, stay healthy, and thrive, you must have a job. If 1/2 the jobs in our culture disappear because AI can do them faster and cheaper, what then?

A review of the latest camera might mean nothing to a person who approaches photography in a complete different way. A streetphotographer most likely desires a different camera than a sportsphotographer and that means his MFThirds camera is as important as the otherones Nikon, Canon or Sony. It can be a very personal choice even on color science, ergonomics, size etc.

I prefer to see a review of a device that is already available in the market, because it will be closer to what I would get if I buy it. Companies can simply send out those products if they care so much about having incluencers and KZreadrs to do the marketing for them. I agree with the points that Gerald brought up. I mean, people like you and PetaPixels dudes are very professional after years of work, but many are on the influencer side of things and want to influence people to buy the product they were handed for free. Fujifilm has been doing the same thing with the X-T50, it's clearly overpriced but people are hyping it up, in my opinion.

You guys are very honest reviewers and really are the exception. Most reviewers sugar coat and don't give the honest truth. Worse yet they don't even care or know. You Tubers are paid on views and engagement. Hot off the press topics will always pay more than a review that is 3 months behind. Bottom line is the system lends itself to bias and it's real. Gerald should be applauded for his honesty. I can tell you I will view his stuff way more now than before. This latest Pano event debuting a really terrible camera that really has no place in the industry given its limitations should be trashed. No mechanical shutter yields it useless inside with modern LED lights for pics. Who in the right mind will pay $1500 for this camera that essentially will be worse than your cell phone under these circumstances. Go buy any number of similar sized cameras that will be less $$ and perform better in more situations. Tell me how many of these so-called reviewers actually said that truth. Undone is right!

The problem I see is that the big independent and trustworthy channels like you and Gerald are not asked by the Camera manufacturers to be involved in the product development cycle, probably because they fear leaks to the competition. I understand that you are even not part of panel discussions by the manufacturers to gather requirements. One option is that you take your role as 'defender of the audience' more serious and just like Digital DJ Tips you gather who we are and what we want. Setting up and analyzing a questionnaire is a big task but is doable. So you gather an important part of the market information and sell/defend that as requirements to the camera industry. You then become an active lobbying party towards the camera industry representing us, your audience. So far only Digital DJ Tips has such a position on youtube. Another option could be that a major brand like Sony would invite you and Gerald to create a Northrop & Undone edition of a new camera where you are involved in tuning the specs and being part of the testing. OK, you will have to sign an NDA with a big penalty if you say too much. I have seen this in the world of DJ gear (Laidback Luke for ReLoop for example) and portable speakers (Oluvs Gadgets for Earfun). For sure, if the product turns out bad you have something to explain because your names will be used in the marketing material.

Go to events, there is nothing to stop you (or anyone) giving an initial review/impression then reviewing a full production unit when released or even revisiting a product midway through its life cycle and reviewing it again. After all, after several firmware updates, is it even the same camera that was initially reviewed? I think reviews should always try to be in a positive tone, yes point out flaws and problems, you can say "the camera overheated after X minutes of use, however we have been told this will be fixed before release, so we will revisit this issue when we get our hands on the final hardware" I don't see an issue, with people focusing on who the camera is for, not just complaining that it is of no use to wildlife photographers or landscape photographers etc. Not every camera needs to be great at everything it is finding the right balance. I watched several S9 reviews, all of them mentioned the negatives, 15 min record limit, no mechanical shutter, no viewfinder, no flash support. But they generally looked at what it could do, and the new features and customisable, sharable LUTs as the sensor etc was already a know quantity Would I buy one after watching these reviews, no... because I work in a studio and need flash support, I like having a viewfinder and when I record video, the 15min limit could be a problem... But if I wanted a fun small camera for general purpose photography, I may have considered this, then still purchased an X100VI.

It happens that I buy a product purely based on rumors. I order it as soon as the link is available and then I start to view the reviews. If the reviews are really bad, then I might cancel my order. However I sometimes also buy something that is released a while back. In that case I base my decision more on the actual option and use of the experts. A few months back I bought my first video camera, the FX-3, and my opinion was not based on a single review but I know a lot of people use this camera a lot and love it for their daily work. That tells me more than a review of 15 minutes.

God, KZread photography is so lost. It's crazy that it has taken this long for some content creators to start talking about ethics since 99% lack any sort of moral code. They'd accept free gear from the devil if they knew they'd make a couple of bucks off ad revenue. Switching from brand to brand, camera to camera, all with a straight face telling the viewer to use their affiliate link. It is nauseating. But I don't blame anyone because making camera reviews is way easier than trying to get paid photography work. Looking forward to all these salespeople masquerading as photographers and their "ethics" videos for the next couple of weeks before everyone forgets this because of the next paltry camera upgrade from Sony or Canon. "The things you own end up owning you."

I think the events and coverage of them still has value. Both entertainment value and a preview value. But I think it's key to be transparent about what they are, to acknowledge potential biases, and to understand that they're not really valid as standardized unbiased reviews. I think probably the best solution would be to separate the terminology of a preview and a review, if you're getting to see a camera early at one of these events it's a preview, if you've gotten to live with it for awhile and use it in your home setup scenarios then it might be valid as a review. And I would say if you're wanting to be taken seriously as a channel you should offer both if it is economically feasible. Give me the tech circus, then give me to the three/six month review, you can even reference back to the pre-launch events in your reviews and see if they've upheld their promises. In most other industries it's valid to make these distinctions, why should it be any different with camera gear.
