Let’s face it, any top end camera in the last ten years can produce technical results undreamed of in the golden age of photography. The digital-age improvements are impressive, but the improvement in photographic results is, as best, subject of debate. In the end, the supposed technological competition among Nikon, Canon and Sony is mostly a marketing phenomenon.

A completely subjective thing - I cannot stand Sony's bodies but I have friends who absolutely adore them.
I find it funny because the R6 mark II is already a spectacular, near-perfect camera for almost every type of photography. I can see the R1 being 30-32MP @ 100FPS, 9mil dot EVF, 4mil dot OLED screen that flips like the a9III's, flash sync of 1/1000th, and have GPS and ethernet features. Maybe they even lift the dual USB-C ports setup from the NIkon Z8.

If you’re a pro, (and I am inferring where you are in your pro journey based on the question) forget brand loyalty, get whatever allows you to do the job at the cheapest price and forget about the camera market for a decade. Your margins are going to be slim, it’s a feast and famine industry so do not spend money that you don’t need to spend. You’ll change systems when it’s cheapest to do so, because something broke and changing systems is the most cost effective way to replace it. If you’re an amateur, get whatever makes you want to get out and take your camera with you, and ignore anyone who tells you that you’ve made the “wrong” decision.
Pricing on R3 and performance looks great right now…..
Based on the photo leak on another channel, the S9 has the shape of an “influencer” (ZVE-1 style) camera with no EVF. I suspect the Lumix sales pitch will be built around open-gate recording and maybe an auto-crop feature which grabs a 9:16 out of the 3:2 sensor. Now what if that vertical crop is tied to subject tracking so that it “slides” across the sensor to keep the subject in frame? That’s pure speculation on my part, but that would give Panasonic a leg up on the competition. Even the open gate which they have been doing in the S5II will be a big plus.
waiting for the r5m2 before making any decisions about moving to another platform. Hoping for pre and post capture
I like that Canon is taking all the needed time for their new flagship camera. Unless the R1 is really available I'm not disappointed at all. What I saw with the other announcements R5 II (an R9 - RP successor?) and an R7 II I think Canon is doing quite well. Also they announced (finally) a new RF-S lens 18-60 f2.8! This is still Canon's weak point in their APS-C lineup.

Gotta love the Chelsea photobomb…. So smooth! 😂
I use DPP (wasn't aware of a paid denoise subscription? I don't usually use the denoise it has)... I don't love it, but there is something mysterious it does that none of the other pro programs can do in terms of clarity when processing. I tested head to head with the top paid competitors and while they are light years ahead in every other way, the basic lens corrections (chromatic aberration, etc) and resulting clarity were best with DPP... Whatever it is is contained in the "digital lens optimizer" slider. I always assumed they had some inside info on the cameras/lenses/files that allowed this. I use a cheap/entry-level camera, though, so that may play in to this. I do basic/simple development in DPP and then the real editing in Gimp. If somebody gave me a free lightroom license I would still use DPP to do initial processing and then process in LR, just because the images simply don't come out as nice otherwise. TLDR: DPP does suck, but in my testing it seems to have a weird special sauce. If (if) I'm right, it might be worth a video, Tony!

I think its too early to really guess what the camera will have or not. As far as canon being behind others. Your point on when Nikon released their flagship and it took 2 years to get it "right". I'd rather them wait and get it right out of the gate. At the end of the day we all have our camera systems that we like and don't. I am a canon shooter, but I appreciate what sony, and nikon have as well. Whatever tool we have that can get the job done for our clients is what I use. No client ever cares what camera I am using, what system I have, or won't hire me because I shoot with canon and not a SONY.

Cellular connectivity would be awesome along with Oled display. I think it will have 30-36 megapixel which would be perfect for all kinds of photography striking a very good balance between megapixel and image quality performance from sports photographers to wedding and event photographers. Even though I mostly do wildlife photography and probably won’t be able to afford it I’m looking forward to its new advancements that might carry over into the R5 Mark ii 😊 Thanks Tony for the update and your insight into what we might expect from Canon

Canon own and have made global shutters back in the day with their C700 cinema camera, but Global shutter have a lot of limits. Most people hate on the Canon cameras for the specs on paper :) Even Tony did that with the Eos R :P but eventually people try it out and end up buying it 🤣 My guess: - 30 MP full frame stacked dual gain output sensor - 1/1250 sec flash sync time

Glimpses of Pixel in your videos are always smile-inducing.
If the camera resolution isnt ideal for wildlife and landscape photography, then i dont see it as a flagship camera, they might as well call it the R3 mk2. Both sony and nikon flagship is north of 45mpx, canon doing less will be so disappointing. Its supposed to be the jack of all trades and master of everything. Going the low resolution path is like matching the A9 series instead of the A1. Wildlife shooters are stuck with 1 cfexpress card slot on the R5.
@sarbelv1lo

Your definition of flagship is not the same as for canon professional sports photographers, i respect your opinion but if you would just think about how canon segments its camera line you would understand and maybe be less dissapointed: all 1 series had lower pixel counts than 5 series (5div, 5Ds, 5Dr were all above 1d series pixel count), if you're looking for more pixels its definitely 5 series or 6series
@AzarathGirl123
18 күн бұрын
@@sarbelv1lo it wasn’t me who said it would be a master of everything, it was canon. Unless we have different understanding of the word “everything”, i think they are contradicting themselves. i can accept the fact that the 1 series is only for professional sports photographers, but that by definition means it is not a flagship which should excel in everything like the A1 and Z9. You can bet canon is gonna reserve premium features for the R1, and wildlife/landscape photographers cant even buy those features even if they are willing to pay for it because those features and bundled up with a 30mpx camera. At the end of the day, the industry standards and common practices are defined by competition, if sony and nikon can make a flagship camera thats great for both sports and wildlife and landscape photographers, why cant canon do the same? If canon is unwilling to match the competition, they better be ready to pay with their market share. Nikon just acquired red and they will be coming after canon and sony hard, at this rate canon will become the new nikon.
@sarbelv1lo
14 күн бұрын
Like i said maybe you're not getting me on this, your definition of flagship is not what these guys needs as flagship, sony and nikon decided to go through the higher megapixel way but it may not be the best in everything either, there are some flaws in both of sony and nikon flagships, they are not covering all what is important for some professional point of view, neither have proper tethering or high speed delivery solution, higher megapixels means larger files that needs to be moved quickly for delivery, the dynamic range also in low light is not the best either, a7v for example has better dynamic range than the A1 while its not the flagship, a7c has better video than A1 and Z9. bursts mode for both nikon and sony have some limitation to either jpeg or compressed raw and limits to only a few lenses which allow to use the max rate advertised. Dont get me wrong, the canon model will have flaws too but for the master of everything i believe the 30mp is the sweet spot for everything that can be covered professionally at exception of medium format photography.. Am not buying it but i know people who will definitely buy it (i have a photographer friend who shoots surf competition professionnaly he uses 1dx3 and R3). I respect all the different brands and models they make, it gives more choices to what someone might need or not.
Rumors are that this will be able to take 3D pictures.
Yeah I was expecting a new primary processor in the R1 but it’s likely to be ridiculously expensive so not a practical purchase for me. But hey if it’s amazing I’ll reserve judgement.
would be a shame if it had such low megapixel count since nikon z9 has 45 and sony a1 has 50 in ther flagships

The specs were already out there, and Adorama accidentally posted them. We've known for almost half a year that the R1 isn't going to be 45mp or more. You need 45mp for 8k. The leaked specs for months has been 33mp and different burst modes. It's 40 continuous, and then 120-240 depending on the file you use.
It seems the technology has come close to a peak as far as photography goes. All bells and whistles now as opposed to improving the images. R1 will be a niche market for pros, and hell yes I would love one but I dont need 120 or 200 fps for my work. My Nikon D4s will have to suffice. And my still loved and used film cameras.
Love this channel
Here are specs according to Adorama and that flash sync speed improvements alone without use of leaf shutter or global shutter is impressive: High-speed autofocus and exposure enhanced by AI recognition Moving object trajectory prediction, high success rate smart object lock focus tracking 30MP full-frame stacked dual-gain sensor Purely electronic rolling shutter faster than any mechanical rolling shutter 1/1,250 sec flash sync time (
Will Canon ever come out with another camera without a low pass filter
Ok, R1 is intended as a flagship, my thing is wildlife. Will eye focus be included in the new R3 or R7?
I think the FPS will be higher than the current Canon ‘limit’ of 40. My prediction (today is 16 MAY 2024) is that it will be 50-75 FPS, but the extra processor will allow for a longer buffer/better buffer clearing.
Less than 36 Megapixels (minimum for 8k video) and Canon should just wait till 2034 and release it as a vintage throwback curio.
Looks like Chelsea is waiting to go to the shops... and Tony's in trouble. lol
Disappointed based on the leaks so far. I was hoping for 45mp of the R5, more speed, a big battery, GPS, better DR, etc. This is like R3 mk2 to me and not a flagship camera aimed only at sports pro photographers. I hate to consider the dollar lost in dumping my Canon gear, but the Z9 with 45mp for wildlife, landscape, etc. looks really interesting. If Canon thinks the R1 is their flagship, then we're stuck with R5mk2 which they will never add the builtin grip and bigger battery to for wildlife. Nikon still seems to be working on their lens lineup, but the 600mm f4 TC for wildlife looks interesting. You don't have to remove the lens in dusty areas like Canon to get that extra bump to 840mm. I saved enough expecting Canon R1 to be overpriced that I could buy the Z9 and the lens money I saved would get me the 600mm f4 TC. Then if I sell off the Canon gear, maybe enough to fill the other lens like 24-70, 100-400. Being a Canon shooter for 50yrs (saved my money as a teenager) it's hard to jump ship. Any thoughts from those who own the Nikon Z9 and if you owned or use the R5, how is the picture quality, ease of use, etc. compare.

From what I understand the readout speed of the R1 will be MUCH higher than the one of the R3. The R3 needs 5.5 milliseconds for the readout, but the R1 does not have a mechanical shutter. So its sensor readout speed can't be slower than its flash sync speed of 1/1250s. That is just 0.8ms.
My gut tells me too little too late. I say this as someone who has owned 1DX series cameras and the Eos R3. But also as someone who owns the Sony A9 III… which is a much more innovative offering that anything in Canon’s current lineup. Still, I’m not counting Canon out just yet, because they certainly have a lot of tech they could offer. Interesting times.
If the leaked specs are true, the readout speed is 0.8 milliseconds, which effectively negates the need for a global shutter.
I'm guessing they're probably going to want to get this out by the end of the year or early next year as I feel Nikon will release an updated Z9 Mark II by the end of the next year (so end of 2025). Not that there is anything wrong with the current model, but I have a hunch that their method of staying competitive is doing a lot of firmware updates to improve/add features and then release new bodies on a 2-4 year cycle (2-3 years perhaps for the mid-range and 4 years for the flagships), and considering the Z9 started shipping at the end of 2021, the end of 2025 will mark 4 years. This is of course if we use the Z6/Z7 series as an example, with the 2nd gen coming out about 2 years after the first gen, and now the gen 3 bodies (at least the Z6 III) will likely be coming out this year so 3 years after the second gen. My guess is it isn't a global shutter sensor either, but it may be a stacked sensor, which does seem to help with some things, although Canon has shown us that it's not necessary to have a stacked sensor to get good sensor performance. There was some talk that Sony had developed a shutter that could sync up to 1/400s which makes me wonder if perhaps the new Nikon Z9 Mark II might have something like that and perhaps a new processor or dual Expeed 7's to help boost processing and hopefully speed things up like sync speed and overall processing. So it makes me wonder what the next Z9 iteration will be like, although I would not be buying one regardless (the Z8 is plenty for me, being a non-pro shooter).
11 years ago, I had a little job as a sports photograph. I stopped, now I am in again, for leisure only. I haven't been following the industry when off, so my Q is, why is Canon's flagship so much behind (time wise)?
I just want to see Canon's subscription model roll out with this amazing camera. Consumers are going to love that.
People have to remember that Canon is #1 for sports photographers. This customer doesn’t want surprises. They want to put on the lens and start taking pictures using their old workflow with just better image quality and speed to get the exact moment the ball hits the bat of the defender blocks a jump shot.
Looks like Chelsea is eagerly waiting for you! Looks like she wants to go shopping!! Come on Tony! Is it time to shoot a video!!!
Love the cute doggie!
The pretty cute dog and the very smart Chelsea stole the show in the back ground !
Canon always realeases it's PRO Cameras before the Olympics going back to the EOS 1
Ever heard of a 3-way pan-and-tilt head ?

Myself all I do is Wildlife - so not interested simply because of the lowered MP - The R5mkii will need to be a game changer for me to even consider it - I'd rather take those $$$$ and buy better glass than what I currently have.
The expectations for the R1 are very high. Partly because of that article saying it would be the "master of everything". But mostly the expectations are high because people think it should be an improvement on cameras that Sony and Nikon have had on the market for a while now. If Canon doesn't get QPAF into the R1, you now know it will be at least four years before we see it in the R1 Mark II. Four years. I can pretty much guarantee you that the other two will implement it in the next two years. But, hey, at least Canon will have AI and a subscription model.
It will sound like I'm here only to criticise. Sound quality dropped a lot and those harsh sibilants badly need de-essing. Thank you for the news.
Hey, Tony, would you mind asking Chelsea if she'll share her Sour Patch Kids with me? They're my favorite. Thanks! :D

It’s actually insane that you knew that’s what I was eating 😂 I love them
I am happy with my R3. I am still learning it. Lol
I think they will go with a big mega pixel count. They are going to have a fast censor and it will shoot movies in 8K minimum probably over sampled from 12K And I think what pros really want especially photo journalists is a direct link to the G5 cell services. So a SIM card in the camera which will send raw files directly to your editing team ready to be published in just a few minutes. I think this is a feature that is needed in today's workflow that cell phones have access to but not actual cameras and they should be able to do it. When a guy on their smart phone can publish on instagram faster than you can that is an issue for journalism.
afaik Sony a iii has cmos global shutter
I feel like their flagship non flagship was the R3. They released the R3 as maybe to buy them some time to further develop a higher end flagship.

The R3 could also be like the EOS-3 before it where it was a one and done camera to test new technology such as the EYE AF.
I just learnt I was supposed to use the phone vertically. I don’t think I have ever done that.
Luv da puppy
I think canon need to hear what the people need so they can finish it off.
If I was picking features, I would want better battery technology that doesn’t need so much space for batteries, making the camera lighter
Canon seeing the Sony A-R series with 40 mpx and got nervous. LOL
Interesting.. but seriously distracted by your cute dog in the background. And I'm not the only sucker for a cute dog.😁
