With the Lemon Tetras I have to cover the front glass so they feel safe enough to spawn as my fish room is very small and I’m busy doing water changes every morning. I have to do this with many spawnings, not just tetras, otherwise the fish are too nervous to breed. I simply check the spawning tanks late afternoon to see if there are any eggs under the spawning grill. Interesting that you haven’t noticed that small tetras won’t feed on their eggs?

Thanks for the information. No I haven’t tried the Red Cherries again - I only had a trio, 1 male and 2 females, to start with and lost one of the females. What were your water parameters and hatch rate?
@regisand2 ай бұрын
@PaulsFishroom we have glacier water here in Portland, Oregon, US. So the tap water is pretty close to rain water or RO water. PH comes out at 7.2, but after 24hrs of aging and aeration it goes down to 6.8. I keep them at 76F and spawn them at 78F. I don't know the hatch rate because when I use a grid, they don't seem to spawn. Very weird. But when they are in a bare bottom 10 gallon tank, with matten filter, half full of Java moss, I leave them there for a week, then remove all adults and wait. That usually results in 150 to 200 fry.

Hey sir ...im new to angelfish breeding and trouble getting them to breed. Can you tell me how do you get them to breed (triggering) and about tank sizes and how do u perform water changes. By water changes i mean how often and how much do you change water. If u can help that would be great 🙏
@PaulsFishroom3 ай бұрын
Getting them to breed is a big question I like to buy a group of youngsters and grow them up together feeding them a variety of foods eg quality dried flakes and granules along with frozen adult brine shrimp, frozen glass worm (white mosquito larvae). Start off with a group of 8 if you can and you will get at least one or two pairs. Ideally use a 30 gallon, or larger, aquarium. In my fish room I keep them in bare bottom tanks to make water changes easier. I tend to syphon the mulm from the bottom of the tank each day changing about 10% of the water. As they grow partial water changes become larger but will depend on your feeding practices. If you feed them well they should start breeding at around 8 months old. Once you have identified a pair put them in a separate tank at a temp of about 80F and increase your feeding and partial water changes. You can see the water parameters I use in the videos. Good luck 🤓👍

@PaulsFishroom3 ай бұрын
@@vishwanirmala5256 I don’t find that water changes stress the fish too much. If anything they seem to make the fish more active. I don’t know what the quality of your tap water is so cannot really advise you how to carry out your water changes. However, I simply syphon off the mulm every day and, for small water changes, use cold tap water that passes through a HMA unit. For larger water changes the water is stored for a couple of days and brought up to temperature. Tank sizes obviously will dictate how much water you’ll need to change on a regular basis. There is no better way to learn than experience and you’ll gain this over time as we all have to do unfortunately. 👍

Thank you 🤓👍
Great video as always. Just out of curiosity, what do you do with all the offspring that you get from your breeding projects?
I sell most of them to the local fish stores. Unfortunately, more and more are closing down so with the smaller market I raise far fewer fry than I did a few years ago 😥.
😢mee too
@@PaulsFishroomAh ok, that is sad to hear. Im usually sell them to local fish stores too. Fortunately, fishkeeping as a hobby is still going strong in Germany 😅
@@891Nils maybe i should move to Germany 👍
Nice work mate! I love that shot of the fry ( 8 weeks old) at around 20 minutes into the video. So beautiful. Your fish must keep you very busy.
Luckily I’ve been retired for 9 yrs and spend my mornings in the fish room. I tend to hibernate in the room in the winters which I absolutely hate…
Hi Paul, I love that you caught them spawning on film. Beautiful fish, nice work. The spawning mop is a great idea for providing the female with some place to hide in case the male gets too aggressive.
One of my v early attempts trying to edit and put a video together. Hopefully, my more recent efforts are an improvement 🤪
whats the size of the tank?
I tend to use small tanks if possible as it’s easier to feed the fry. The problem however, in using small tanks is that you have to move the fry into larger tanks when they are still very small. The size of the tank in the video is 16x8x8 inches (3.5 UK gallons) and I started moving the fry to larger tanks when they were 3 - 4 weeks old.
Can i ask Sir,is the eggs need some air pump(oksigen)?
No, just as you can see in the video. Just make sure your water is very soft (I use RO but rainwater is also good). Once the fish have spawned cover the tank with a towel until the fry are free swimming. Keeping the tank covered helps to keep the bacterial count down. Good luck 🤓👍
curious what u r feeding your dwarf adults? great background music too😊 They generally eat off the bottom? that surprises me.
I feed a variety of foods both dried and frozen brine shrimp and frozen glass worm. Gouramis feed at all levels of the water not particularly at the bottom.
thanks for posting❤
Stunning! So hard to find quality Koi/Red devil's in Scotland! These look great! 🤩
Thank you. Same in England I’m afraid!
@PaulsFishroom It's a shame really but atleast some people are putting the effort in! I'm heading down to Chester next weekend, any recommendations for shops to stop in at?
@@LongfieldReptilesandAquatics sorry I wish I could . You could however try Premier Aquatics in Runcorn. Steve Chester has decent fish.
@PaulsFishroom Thanks! Steve's place is on my list to visit. Not been down in a few years but will probably pop into Aqualife and Piers aswell 😄
so are reed tetra and kitty tetra the same fish?
No the Reed tetra is H. elachys whereas Hyphessobrycon heliacus is, I believe the, scientific name for the Kitty tetra. I bought my Reed tetras that were misnamed as Kitty tetras in a LFS
thanks for the documented video. subscribed.. 😀
Welcome 🤓👍
Thank you for the very detailed film. Do they have seasons for breeding or do they show any signs and then you put them in a breeding tank?
No they don’t appear to have a breeding season that I’ve noticed. Just pick a pair were the female looks like she I carrying eggs and the male is showing some interest in her. If you have a large enough tank the male will chase the female away after a couple of hours and they may spawn repeatedly over the next few days or until the female is empty of eggs…
I'm going to attempt to breed these. Was it simply a male and female in the breeding tank or 5 or 6?
Yes a single male and female. If you put a group in a tank to spawn the males just keep on fighting with each other for territory. Good luck 👍
Great to hear from you again. Looking at these beauties, I might have to start breeding angelfish again 😅
Thank you. Been busy with other things in the last few months. Hopefully I’ll get a few more videos uploaded during the year. Next Angel video will be a Smokey Angel back cross… 🤓👍
Looking forward to it@@PaulsFishroom 👍
I keep diamond tetras in a 75 gallon tank and I occasionally see one or two fry appear in there. Once they're big enough for me to notice, the other fish seem to leave them alone. As they grow out I give them to a local fish store. Really enjoyed seeing how they could be purposefully bred (with LOTS of fry resulting). You're right that these fish are really overlooked. As adults they are incredibly beautiful fish!
I’m pleased you enjoyed the video. Thank you 🤓👍
