Breeding Diamond Tetras

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

A rewarding fish to spawn and raise their fry. Unfortunately, it is often overlooked when for sale in local fish stores!

    I keep diamond tetras in a 75 gallon tank and I occasionally see one or two fry appear in there. Once they're big enough for me to notice, the other fish seem to leave them alone. As they grow out I give them to a local fish store. Really enjoyed seeing how they could be purposefully bred (with LOTS of fry resulting). You're right that these fish are really overlooked. As adults they are incredibly beautiful fish!

    Yes they get longer fins and the males develop brighter ‘diamonds’.

    Thank you for the video! I recently found a surprise fry in my Diamond Tetra tank. Judging by this video I think he was around 12 days when I found him.

    Thanks for sharing! How are you conditioning your tetra before pairing them? and for how long? I managed to get my ember tetra to spawn somehow, after about 3 months of trying.. and got 1 fry...

    Conditioning the fish is important yes - just try to give them a variety of foods. I use both dried foods and frozen. Most days the tertras also get a feeding of freshly hatched brine shrimp. You’ve had minimal success with your ember tetras but you fail to mention what the water parameters were. I always try to give the water parameters on each of my videos and, for tetras, I tend to use either RO or rainwater. It’s important to have a low GH an KH to obtain a maximum hatch rate. Also pH needs to be 7.0 or preferably lower for breeding. Good luck 🤓👍

    Thank you Sir for sharing. Can you explain how you achieve the breeding water parameters? Also can you explain how to select Male and female at 3 months age? Maybe a video?

    I use 90% RO water with 10% rainwater that has had oak leaves soaking in it. You could also use peat which will also reduce both hardness and pH. As far as sexing the youngsters is concerned the males fins will be starting to get longer and the females tend to be a bit smaller and rounder in the stomach.

    Mine just breed in the community tank. The eggs get eaten by my other fish though.

    Great video thanks! Would love to breed this many diamond tetras myself! What happened to all the other fry you had diligently raised up, please don't tell me you culled them?!?!

    Sadly my fish room is v small along with the UK market for tropical fish. For example, my home town (Liverpool) has only 4 LFS and two of those will not buy from local breeders. Even the stores that do will only take 20 or 30 fish so I often travel 40+ miles out of town to sell small numbers of fish. Years ago things were very different and there were plenty of places to sell my fish but those days are long gone I’m afraid!

    How and when do you convert the fry from the ro water to tap water?

  • @PaulsFishroom

    @PaulsFishroom

    Жыл бұрын

    This will depend on a number of factors. It will normally be when I start feeding brine shrimp when I start syphon g off the dead shrimp left uneaten by the fry. I will use airline tubing to do this syphoning into a shallow white dish so that I can see any fry that have been siphoned out. These will then be returned to the fry rank using a turkey baster. The amount of water I replace in very small to start with but gradually more and more water will be replaced as the fry grow. You also have to take into consideration the size of the tank and how many fry are in the spawning. Also you’ll have to consider the species and how they’ll react to water changes which obviously you’ll get to know the more experienced you get. I hope this helps?

    I don’t know where you’re located but here in the UK they are not too difficult to find. Also these fish can gorge themselves on food and block themselves up so it’s best to feed them little and often.
