Great video, you have inspired me to start a fish tank young man. I’m 92 years old and my wife passed 8 months ago so I have been looking for things to keep my mind off her. This will be the first fish tank in the 92 years I’ve been alive. Thanks young lad.

Pretty awesome young man. At 74 I just picked up tropical fish keeping again. This makes the 4th time in my long life that I have done so. I have always been forced to give it up due to too busy a schedule. Now that I am retired I am getting back into it. I love neons and did not know they could be bred so well in captivity. I subscribed and look forward to some benge watching.

I’ve bred Neon Tetra’s when I was in my twenties. It just happened without trying in a 55 gallon aquarium. I never how it happened, but I was excited that it happened. Over the years I just repeated the process. I had many hiding places in the tank, so about 1/3 of them would survive to adults. I’m in my mid 60’s now. I’ve had other kinds of fish, but I’m returning to Neon Tetras soon. I enjoyed watching. Thank you for sharing.

We had a normal fish tank with 4 neon tetras, we never even tried to breed them and yet we were surprised to see large fry swimming around (we weren’t expecting fry so we didn’t see them when they were small), we had a spongey rock/tunnel with lots of shade, and i guess the fry ate algae or fish food scraps,

Great video, i didnt realize that it could be this simple. A few tips: Make an infusoria culture for the newly hatched ones. I think your first few failed is because you were using pure RO water. I would add some moss from a tank in the RO water. Also add Neocaridina Shrimp (cherry shrimp) to the spawn tanks and they will eat the fungus/infertile eggs and keep the fresh eggs fungus free.

I live in brazil and I actually managed to breed them naturally. I have a pound like container about 100 liters, with a lot of plants. I also put them with tanicthys albonubes. I don't know how but there is a lot of neon fry living peacefully with the cloud minnows fry. The surface plants provide alot of hiding places for them so the parents can't eat them that easily. I thought it would be a lot harder to breed them but i managed lol. I guess the secret is constant water changes, so they think it's rain water, since they breed in rainy seasons

I remember, 30+ years ago, that sphagnum moss was used in order to soften the water down to try and encourage neons to breed. I tried it numerous times without any success. Weirdly enough, I managed to breed white cloud mountain minnows practically by mistake, having kept them separate to my community tank fish for a week or so! Luckily, the tank they were in was well established with plenty of food available to the tiny fry, for them to get big enough to eat baby brine shrimp. And, like most, once they're on that, their growth rate really accelerates! Those pink tummies being the giveaway!

I worked in a fish warehouse for a few years. We provided fish for a major pet supply chain. The most frustrating thing we had to deal with was the 'fainting' neons. We had all of our bags checked before they went into the box. We always had to wait until the fainters started swimming again before walking away from the tank. Then, within the 10-15 feet between the tank and the boxing station, there were ALWAYS more that had fainted. So we had to stand at the boxing station until they were all swimming again. It was SO frustrating!

I find this very peculiar that these particular fish(in fact all of them) have a fainting ability(which is called "immobile" stunt or faking death) weird adaptation for a survival tactic. Most predatory fish or animals in general have an auto-feed response to kill and it stops about 99.9% of those predatory fish brains from attacking if their prey "isn't moving" while sending a distress signal to other prey in the area or to other predatory fish,it's not inaudible cause they can hear subtle discrepancy sounds we humans can not hear or see(hertz has a wide system.. we can not hear anything below a 1 decibel or higher than 10 decibel) there are expections(like with me hearing at -5 to -30 that's cause have small hairs in my ear drums) ..anyways .. With neons they love rain water(they also an attuned to " *Agitated* " falling or running water that forces them to either want to drink or jump to catch clean water from the source(which is why they jump from tub to tub, yes I've solved your riddle to them jumping) reverse osmosis water has as you stated about 6.5 ph.. but I normally have mine alittle cleaner around 3.5 ph. I heat my rain water to about 100-120 degrees then allow my gallons that were heated to be naturally cooled off,I want dust, debris, parasites, bacteria to have died off.. you can pressure steam or boil your rainwater both are fine.. My betas(particular the crowntails) love when I drop just a small amount of squeeze lemon juice from the fruit into their tanks. Same with my gouramis(they love oranges) and the senegal butchers they love(cherry juice from the source) so you see all of them have likes of various fruits found in their respective regions of origins..

My neon tetras had no issues spawning in TDS = 300 (as long as they were well fed and otherwise healthy & happy). Try it out, and you'll might get same results. However moving from TDS of 300 into RO water suddenly, is very risky, and stressful for any fish. Neons are hardy fish, but try it with a more delicate fish, and it might not survive. If you do want to move them, acclimate gradually.

@@dingodyno9016you could try. It totally could work, but the tds is a great way to encourage more breeding. Do you need to acclimate the pairs when you move from the main tank to the RO water. My tank has higher Ph(7.8-8). Does plopping them in there work or do you need to acclimate?

I'm new to this and I'm curious-- how do "bad brood stock" produce offspring that are "good brood stock"? Wouldn't the offspring of the bad brood stock have the same issues as there parents? Or is it largely due to how they spend their first couple of grow out weeks? Thanks for the videos, this is beginning to look like a fun hobby!

Capture, shipping and quarantine are all damaging to these fish. Many places use prophylactic medication treatments that are harsh and often build up in fish. They are certainly not the sort of fish you expect to attain the optimal egg health or number for spawning. This is why the fry tend to be so much healthier. With care you can even break the cycle of parents infecting young with unknown parasites, by raising fry in systems with no adults. Done well you will have plenty of fry to pick the best pairs from, to create ideal display fish. Dont forget we are selecting for different traits than nature selects. We want big calm chill pretty fish :) you may not achieve domestication, but you can create a bloodline with enhanced pet fish traits :)

The fry are usually much healthier than the original fish, but not nearly as healthy as high quality neons would be

I thought you were supposed to remineralize RO/DI water before using it. Can fish really live in water with such a low TDS and no minerals?
