did this hike today and holy shit was it hard ! has to be one of the toughest trails in the whole region
Wow that glacier has melted alot not too long ago it was almost all snow not much scrambling hardly any bare rock at the summit.
I heard this past winter was good up there for snow pack 👍🏼
What time did you start trekking?
The hike itself is fairly quick if you’re a seasoned person on the trails. It’s the drive up there that blows! I also heard that Cascade Road just closed today because of the current fire. We started around 7am.
Glaciers sure are looking sad in the Cascades.
It was summer as soon as June hit last year, fortunately there’s a ton of snow up high this year 👍🏼
Love your videos. Thanks for sharing. We're hiking the Teton Crest Trail next week. Looking at the map, I was considering trying to approach Buck Mountain from the other side, ie coming from the TCT. You know anything about that route?
Thanks! Most likely no chance up Buck from the Idaho side unless you plan to trad climb. Waaaaaay above my pay grade. I’m in the Tetons right now and there’s a lot of snow in the backcountry. I was on the Middle Teton 2 days ago and there’s TONS of snow up the approach to Buck still. I’d wait to summit Buck for a few weeks unless you go up there with crampons and an ice axe. The backcountry looks sick though!
@@TheMountainMatt Thanks for the insight. We'll skip Buck this trip. So many great options in the Tetons.
It’s one of the best, enjoy👍🏼!
I hiked this from Logan’s pass. Hiked to the top of the mountain as well. Then hiked all the way back to Logan’s Pass parking lot. Was absolutely fun and thrilling and exhausting but definitely worth the experience.
Heck yeah! 👍🏼
WoW. Ice really raises the bar since theres no way to tell whats solid or liquid. AND if your next step will cause one section of the mountain to cascade and bury you. Great show, guys! Professionals.
It was a great day 🤩
Great video, you all deserve a great dinner.
If I remember correctly we spent a TON in Ketchum for dinner 😆
Great climb and hike.

That particular video was recorded the last week of August 2023. Cascade Pass Road just opened for the season a couple weeks ago so you should be good.
Great video! That road getting in there though ...
I know right! Definitely high clearance.
Love your channel. I'm planning a traverse of the majority of the Tatoosh range for a little later this summer. Tatoosh lake to blue lake and then down to bench and snow lake and ending at reflection lake in MRNP. I think you've inspired me to make a video of the trip.
You have to do it Josh! You’ll be so glad you did it a few years from now. My advice though…. Be in the moment with your family as much as possible 😁👍🏼🤩
@@TheMountainMatt we hike as a family every Friday but once a year I take a big trip on my own. I’ve been a filmmaker for years but never recorded my hikes.
I think it’s time brother 😀
How does the scramble compare to the final scramble of lone Peak
Never done Lone Peak yet but all the research I’ve seen Is Pfeifferhorn is easier.
What the the reason for not taking the Highline in and then back down the loop? Just the amount of people that way?
Yes, pretty much. The Highline is amazing but is a zoo. Also, you'd have to coordinate a hikers shuttle.
Have you done Borah yet?
Heading out to Jackson and Idaho Falls on Monday actually 😃! Doing the Middle and South Teton. Thinking about Borah or Mount St John 🤔 as well. I’m torn!
@@TheMountainMatt Super cool! Can't go wrong with either! Just finished Borah yesterday... the descent is awful (in my opinion) but well worth the torture. Have fun and be safe out there.
Was there any climbing involved? I heard it's pretty much a class 3 walk up, is that correct? Any snow left over?
@@TheMountainMatt ehh.. class 3ish scramble/climb on chicken out ridge and that's pretty much it. Great hand and foot holds up and down. There is a small 20ft or so down climb off the ridge onto the snowbridge but it's super easy. The only snow you have to worry about is the snowbridge, absolutely dry otherwise.
Great! Thanks so much for this!
You guys are brave and made the right smart decision.also you save the rescue people a big job in case you need to be rescued.
Thank you! Live to try again another day.
Awsome!!!
Thank you, it would have been even better if we would have been able to summit 😩 Cheers!
Damn I feel old. When my bro and I were up there, there was no trail from windy pass to Cashmere mountain... Now all these years later there is... yowsers.
We were thinking about taking the standard route up but decided on making our own route as well. Glad we did all the bushwhacking and route finding because Lake Victoria is amazing! We saw 1 person all day and he was headed back down the standard route right at Windy Pass. I think the standard route is almost 20 miles total but mostly trail now like you mentioned. I bet that felt SUPER remote back in the day 👍🏼
@@TheMountainMatt That is a mere 25 years ago... Internet has changed things massively. People look up their route before going now. Just like there is a trail to Tank Lakes now. Back when there was no information and all you had was a map, the number of routes was HUGE and while others had been there, and there were some pinch points, actual off trail "trail" did not exist by and large other than to exceptionally well known areas such as Forbidden peak or Eldorado Peak or Snowfield peak etc.
Sounds like paradise!
I've just recently discovered your content and now I can't get enough. Keep em coming! Well, you know, as long as you can...
Thanks Chris! I truly appreciate that! I’ve got a few in the pipeline coming and have big adventures planned starting next week 😃 cheers!
Is it easy enough to avoid the Knife edge ridge between AF Twins and the Gondola? It looks like you can drop off the ridge on the left and take a road/path to it, but hard to tell how doable that is from the end of the video. Thanks!
Yes, it’s doable! We dropped down into the scree field just before the knife edge and hooked up with a path to the gondola 👍🏼 the knife edge looked like fun! A little sketchy though for the rookies 🤣
@@TheMountainMatt thanks! I will definitely have to add this to my list. Appreciate your videos!
It's a fun little scramble👍🏼
Great video!!! How long ago do you and your family do the hike?? Didn’t seem like much snow at Muir. My wife and I are planning to go up there in a couple of weeks.
Thanks. That was August 2023. I don't get around to editing videos until the winter unfortunately.
Great video!!! How long ago do you and your family do the hike?? Didn’t seem like much snow at Muir. My wife and I are planning to go up there in a couple of weeks.
Great video!! How long ago did you and your family do the hike? My wife and I are heading up in a couple of weeks.
Idaho is my favorite state for all things outdoors. Great video Mtn Matt!
Absolutely agree Mark! Emily and I have a few more years till we’re empty nesters and than we’re coming out there. Another annoying person moving to beautiful Idaho 🤣 thanks for watching!
how long did the glacier take? and for an experienced hiker who's never done glaciers would this be a feasible first and what equipment would be necessary? Thanks!
The glacier only took us 30-45 mins. It's very steep and depending on the year it could have hidden crevasses. It was late in the season when we went up so everything was visible and obvious. I would definitely bring crampons and an ice axe. Depending on the conditions you might want to rope up with somebody. Sahale Glacier is typically a glacier in name only as it is a small glacier but a glacier nonetheless. It's a good glacier to cut your teeth on. Research glacier travel for sure and try to practice with your equipment before getting on it. Have a blast!
@@TheMountainMatt Awesome thanks! What time did yall make it back down too?
We met the girls around 3-330 and than hustled down to the trailhead by around 7ish I believe.
That was awesome
Thanks! It was a fun scramble to an unreal view 🤯
These lakes were virtually destroyed in the huge flood two years ago. I haven't been in the area since then, but word is Island, Becker, and Mystic lakes are pretty much gone.
Wow 😮! I could see how that could happen, it’s such a weird soggy area.
Been there done that! The off trail bush wracking and boulder field is no joke. Worth the pain and sweat. You should do Sylvan Lake in the Beartooths. It's beautiful and is only one of two lakes in Montana with Golden trout.
Cool! I’ll put that one on the list 😁👍🏼
what camera do you rock when you hike? Awesome video!
I've added a few cameras to my collection since this video. I currently shoot with a GH5 and a couple different lenses depending. I also have a dedicated iPhone 14 Pro Max for whoever is with me and they’re willing to get some shoots. Also, a couple GoPros for POV shots and those sketchy areas.
@@TheMountainMatt Thanks for the info and for showing us your adventures! Look forward to future content!
You bet 👍🏼 I love sharing our adventures with like minded peeps 😁
Any bigfoot sightings?
Non that adventure 🤣
i'm surprised you feel safe leaving your vehicle that long.
I didn’t feel safe at all… luckily it was Ben’s vehicle 🤣
Beautiful video. Thanks for sharing. 👍78
Thanks for visiting
Wow! Love this! Me and a friend did the Cascade Canyon trail hike up to Lake Solitude last July, and we hiked out in the dark with head lamps. We also didn't start until a little after 1 in the afternoon. Didn't think it was too difficult, just long, but I hike a lot, so it was no biggie for me. Incredible scenery and it's one of my favorite trails too! Will definitely have to do this one next time I'm back in the Tetons and get started super early lol!
Thanks Josh! Glad you found the channel! Needless to say we slept in the next morning 🤣. I said “hey bear” for at least an hour straight in the dark once we got back to the Jenny Lake area.
Was up there yesterday July 1 and search and rescue was recovering a body of an 80yr old who fell after summiting June 30th.
Sad, it must have been on the ridges near the summit😢
Wow 😬 this is the second time someone has told me something like this…. There’s a super sketchy area of class 5 climbing on that ridge. Sad.
@@nasernaser9391 it was. Sounds like he called his wife from the summit then had the accident on the way down. He's a well known very experienced hiker in the local community.
Terrible! 80 yr old guy huh 🤔…. I wonder if it’s the guy we saw run by use a year before up on Montic Cristo??? An amazing older guy ran by Emily and I like we were standing still! Tall skinny older gentleman.
Hey Matt, I appreciate all of your videos. You clearly take A LOT of extra time getting good shots for us who follow along. Would you mind sharing a) the most difficult hike you've done in Glacier and also b) your favorite hike you've done? Thanks in advance. BTW, your advice was very helpful when my family went to Tetons! Didn't quite make it up to the Jaw but got close. We got sidelined with excessive snow and inadequate gear. :) Thanks again!
That’s great that you got so far into Hanging Canyon👍🏼! Tetons got some late spring snow that is probably going to take awhile to melt. As far as Glacier goes… the most difficult would be either Dragonstail because of the steep LOOSE shale, although it is a short scramble it’s very dangerous. Siyeh Mountain, Sinopah Mountain and Grinnell Mountain were long steep slogs as well but didn’t feel as dangerous. I would have to say that Siyeh would be my most favorite in Glacier to date. Although it’s more of a climb. It had everything, amazing views and all kinds of wildlife. You can’t really go wrong in Glacier, every mountain or trail has its own incredible beauty. My favorite hike would probably be either Dawson Pass or Iceberg Lake. They’re amazing!
@@TheMountainMatt Thanks so much for the response. I'll let you know what we ended up doing! Going in a few weeks. I loved that you and your wife split off on several excursions. I'm going with my two sons who are 17 and 14 along with my wife and daughter who is 9. My daughter has done 13 miles in South Dakota up to Black Elk Peak but I'm thinking there'll be times when it's ideal to bifurcate. :)
My pleasure! I’m so lucky, Emily spoils me so much 😁. We actually cut our teeth on Harney Peak as it was called way back when we all did it! The trees at the top are crazy! Whatever you decide to do you guys will love! Heads up though, Glacier is a different kind of animal 👍🏼, enjoy!
Great vid, as always Matt! Epic views, cloud inversion, and snow fields FTW!!!
Thanks me boy!
Gonna attempt this on Wednesday. Hopefully I won’t be hiking in the dark
Dude! So pumped for you! You should be good, you got the longest part of the year👍🏼 we did that in mid September a few years ago.
Did the 3 Burroughs twice. It is without a doubt a favorite of mine. I love being above tree line the whole time and enjoying the amazing views.
It was a great quick hike that gets you up close and personal to Rainier 👍🏼!
I stopped before the Muir snowfield a couple of times. As long as you have spikes, and trekking poles, I'm assuming it's pretty safe? Any danger of potholing, or is the snow hard enough the whole way?
That was the end of August 2023. It was exceptionally warm the entire summer last year. The snow was packed well so micro spikes were all we needed. I heard there is a lot of snow up high still. I’d check reviews of the trail on AllTrails app or similar apps or stop at a ranger station and check conditions. We felt completely comfortable going up when we did. Post holing would add all kinds of trouble.
I did this in June of this year and it's amazing how different this area is late season. For us it was solid snowpack starting from above the boulder field. I had no idea that everything past the notch was solid rock.
I know right! Ben was also attempting it late May and had to flip due to waist high snow and nonstop post-holing. Our last push was some serious climbing but super fun!
Love being above the clouds on a mountain!
Yes sir! It was something special, a first for us that trip 👍🏼
New subscriber Sir.i love watching you and your family hiking together.watching from tacoma,❤️🫶❤️
Hi Helen! I'm glad you're watching 😁 it means a lot to us that people enjoy our adventures! Emily and I are headed back to your neck of the woods in a couple months actually, cheers!

Maybe we’ll see you out on the trail someday 😃
@@TheMountainMatt I wish 😆
Matt, i have a question for you. What type of sunglasses do you have in this video?
Those are Clifden Oakleys. They were way to big for my tiny bald head so I gave them to a friend 🤣.
Famous words, are we there yet! Keep the videos coming, Matt. Always looking forward to the next one
I know right 🤣! Thanks man, I’m glad you’re following along 👍🏼
@TheMountainMatt you got a great channel going and happy to see this grow. I snapped my leg on my last hike and will be living through your channel for the next three months
Dude! Where were you and how did you get down!?
Round Mountain Darrington wa. Winter route! That's the way to go if you ask me. Suprised not many do it. SAR came and air lifted me to Providence medical.
That's horrible I hope you recover quickly! I can't even imagine! I know the area well, looking at Whitehorse Mountain someday.
I wish your videos were longer.
Thanks, trust me I could make them an hour long but nobody would watch 🤣
@TheMountainMatt lol. We would. 😀

This was awesome!! Those views are insanely beautiful. Trip of a lifetime right there. It’s always tough getting to a summit, but it’s always worth it.
Thanks! Rainier is unexplainable! What a perfect NP, Cheers!
Unreal hike . Was at paradise over Labor Day and it was snowing and freezing rain . Coming from the east coast it was quite the shock to realize how late in the year winter persist on Rainier . Will be back one day when the weather is better hopefully !
We were there in August 2023. They had sunny weather in spring from the get go last year. We got so lucky with the clouds giving way like they did while we were out there. On our off day everything was socked in with clouds. Definitely try to get back in the future 👍🏼
Also had to ask , got any recommendations in Yosemite and/or kings canyon / Sequoia ?
We actually cut our teeth in Yosemite when the girls were very young. Mist Trail is a must. Try to get all the way to Vernal and Nevada Falls, they’re both gorgeous. Upper Yosemite Falls is great as well. If you have time go to the Hetch Hetchy part of the park is quieter and gorgeous as well. Haven’t been to Kings/Sequoia yet but I’ve researched the Mineral King area and it looks amazing!
While this was posted in May it looks very, very different from the ski trip I did in April. I'm guessing you shot this video in August or September. Safe travels!
Yes sir 👍🏼 … late August 2023. It take me awhile to get videos edited and uploaded. Cheers!
I love the video quality, what camera are you using?
Thanks! I currently shoot with a GH5 and a couple different lenses depending. I also have a dedicated iPhone 14 Pro Max for whoever is with me and they’re willing to get some shoots. Also, a couple GoPros for POV shots and those sketchy areas.
