Eurylochus, in the original text, wasn't only his second in command, he was married to Ctimene (Odysseus' sister). So, brother in arms, his second in command, his literal brother-in-law so his 'family'. It makes sense why he is so close with and trusts Eurylochus.

Eurylochus is indeed Odysseus' brother-in-law. He was married to Climenes, Odysseus' youngest baby sister.

Nah this is also the era where a mutiny could get everybody killed. Odysseus is tryna avoid that. He's being a sensible captain. I feel like if Eurylochus had voiced his concerns in private he might've been more receptive.

This one hits hard and I can start to see some real cracks showing in the boys. Something I noticed on re-listening is a tone shift not just in Odysseus, but Eurylochus. His argument is solid... at the start. "Wait... stop, think. Don't just run at this god without a plan." Solid advice. The crew is a bit shaken from everything. It has been rough. His friend and king has 'that look' again of adventure. But this changes when the crew chimes in. This conversation shouldn't have been in public. You don't question your general, captain, or King in front of the men. You speak privately. You trust. A slight slip up? Probably, but as the men/crew start to agree with him Eurylochus starts to become bolder. He oversteps... Odysseus even calls him on this, "where is this attitude coming from?" And Eurylochus tries to cover it (maybe even believes it) saying he doesn't want to see more of the men die... in front of the men. Odysseus at this moment takes a tactic shift and almost puts on the "king face" mask. He addresses Eurylochus. He answers his questions and accusations/concerns direcly but you can feel he isn't speaking to Eurylochus anymore. He is speaking to his large army who is very clearly overhearing this exchange. Odysseus is perfoming here, as King. Reminds them he is an amazing leader, cares for them, empathic to their plite, and is with them. And then humbles his second publicly and asks him to step into "the office". After separating Eurylochus he reminds him of his role and checks him quick and you can hear Eurylochus back down and seem almost shocked at himself and his own actions. You mentioned Athena's influence with the piano? I don't know if it's true but I love it so much to let go of the idea of her own influence on Eurylochus. Edit: removed potential spoiler. Not risking it.

Unfortunately, all the vas change out, but that's mainly because 1. pilot vas rarely if ever play the same role in the actual show, which is a sad unfair part of the industry, and 2. the pilot characters actually have 2 vas (one for talking, one for singing) and in the show proper, the vas are all broadway singers, who can both act and sing, which I assume is easier on production to have one actor for each character instead of two. I personally do think the show vas are REALLY good, so go in with an open mind!

So another thing about that little speech at the end: the storm from song 1 is still going on. Odysseus sees the home of the wind god, and goes "the god of wind seems to be the best way to get rid of the storm blocking our path." Then Eurylochus is just like "nooo bad idea" with no alternative ideas of his own, and no real reason other than "your luck is bad, and people die when you make plans". I think Ody is perfectly justified in telling Eurylochus to shut up there. And even if he weren't justified, his fatal flaw is pride. Eurylochus questioned his judgement in front of EVERYONE. Not only that, but in doing so, started planting "seeds of doubt" in the crew about whether Ody is even fit to lead. His pride is not gonna like that.

21:07 To be fair, he was screwing up the crew’s moral, making them question leadership and overall integrity of their leader. You can’t have soldiers doubting the captain in the middle of a war, we saw what happened when they weren’t given orders in the cyclops saga

  • @draeonic

was he making them question or was he giving voice to their questions? I agree he should have done it in private, but Odysseus should have listened instead of demanding blind devotion.

It's refreshing to find someone else who finds how Odysseus treated Eurylochus despicable. I know there's a risk of mutiny if doubt spreads, but it's warranted doubt, and a mutiny would've saved a lot of men at this point. I also just disagree with the idea of blind loyalty and never openly questioning someone's plan or motives. Odysseus behaved like a tyrant in that part. An inability to take public criticism is a sign of a bad leader. Everything Eurylochus said is valid, and if the other crew members haven't already noticed these flaws, that puts them in danger, because they don't question whether the orders they are following are truly safe or reasonable. If a commander told his entire crew "Pull the pin on a grenade and just hold it." if the crew were blindly submissive and did it, that would get them killed. Eurylochus is correct that Odysseus relies on wit, but he also relies on one other thing, and it's not his own skills. Divine intervention. Even in Troy, at the beginning of "The Horse and the Infant", you can hear a clock. That's one of Athena's motifs. Athena's watching, and, knowing the gods, likely intervening, even if only slightly.

I personally took Oddysues weird Happy go Lucky attitude in this Song as an attemp to keep Polites Philosophy alive, for his memory and as a type of deniel on how being Nice got people, including Polites, killed with the Cyclopse. What also makes me think that way is how when Oddysues pulled Eurylychus aside his tone changed and turned Strong and Commanding, almost angry. Meaning the first half was more of a show. Also Eurylychus expressing his worries outloud in front of his Man is Dangerous, daubting your captain in the middle of the sea is dangerous, when you are in a crew you are a team, if a part of the teams has daubts and starts desobeying, things can go erray... And well... They did. I'm still so mad about that! Yes, Oddye f*cked up, but it was Once in 10 years as leader, how is that enough to create a level of Distrust to the point of what happens in "Keep Your Friend Close"? Didn't the crew thought how weird it was that they had 9 Days of Perfect Weather after that Crazy Storm suddenly disappeared? And how it was right after Oddysues talked to the WIND GOD, and explaines the storm was in the Bag!? Camon now, the crew has part of the fault of what prevented them to be home already 😭

honestly, I think killing the baby was the moral choice, because that baby WILL grow up to be a monster and WILL kill everyone Odysseus loves. if Odysseus doesn't kill the infant, then he his wife, son and all of his men, and his mother, ALL of their blood WILL be on his hands.
