Hi, Newbie Here! I really enjoyed your reaction. I subscribed! Seems you've got many of the rules of Voiceplay in play (heh), except always watching all the way to the end, where the Patrons roll, and keeping captions on! You're really loving their music, and that means a lot to me! Just what is a "brand manager?" I've never heard the term. If you get to work with amazing people like Peter Barber though, it must be a super cool job!

Hi Casper! 🙂 Actually, there's no green screen here. Eli used Unreal Engines to create the background, and then they went to film at a different studio, not at Pattycake Productions. The Unreal Engines thing was then visualised on a full wall sized LCD screen. The only problem was that the air conditioned was broken and they were filming at 100+ degrees F, wearing fur and stuff 😅. Another thing that I feel to mention in that there was no heavy wooden door creaking: it was all Layne, believe it or not 😁. The whole rap section was added by Voiceplay. I forgot the name of who actually wrote it, I'm very bad at remembering names, sorry. 🙂 What else? Ah, yes: Miracle of Sound himself watched this and commented under the video, and he gave VP "10 raised alehorns out of 10" for the most creative cover of this song 😁. Well deserved, I'd say. 🙂 I kinda see the relationship of this and "If I had a heart". Yes, I love TBG as well, since their beginning (which for me was "Emperor's new clothes"). 🙂 If you want to react a TOTALLY different "sea shanty" by Voiceplay, I'd suggest you to check their "ridiculous version" (Geoff's words) of "Drunken sailor". 😉 For a TOTALLY different side of them, no shanty-ish at all, you could try "I can't make you love me", or "Creep", or if you have't seen it yet "In the hall of the Mountain King". 🙂 See you next time! 🙂

@@CFEntertains And their current newest song is a Space Shanty - "Sleeping in the Cold Below". Might want to check it out, too. It actually is from a video game 'WarFrame' and is a bit of a departure from the original. The in-game song has a heavy Celtic vibe with fiddle and bohdran drum, but still a bit shanty-ish. VoicePlay picked up the speed a bit and Layne is doing a considerably different beat. Although at one point Geoff's bass line is in Dm's which sounds a bit more like an actual bohdran, that kind of hollow sound that drum gives.

Eli first used Unreal Engine to create the backgrounds for My Mother Told Me, which were then composited in via chroma-key (green screen) during post. Valhalla Calling was shot at Vū Studios. The results are spectacular! Guessing that the HVAC issues were fixed as they filmed the WARFRAME Sleeping in the Cold Below production there too. :)

Great reaction. So happy to have you react to VoicePlay. Note to Geoff: Heimdahl called. He wants his Gjallarhorn back. ☄️ I also like that we have J staring out across the water at the beginning. He’s was recruited by the US Navy and he’s come back (at least for this). The rap was added and some hints to his being in the military (ops, etc). One of my favorite parts is while he’s rapping, in the background you can hear the guys singing “This is WAR”. It always gives me chills. Other commenters with Scandinavian roots have pointed out that the rap is not much of a reach as flyting became a part of Nordic cultures by the 19th century. It was described as an extremely spirited contest of verbal assaults. The makeup and a lot of the costuming is from their previous cover of My Mother Told Me. Among their tattoos are runes spelling out VoicePlay. Layne did the arrangement and Eli created the amazing backgrounds. It was filmed, not green screen, but at a studio with immense (Full wall!) LED screens. The only real pieces in that set are the tables and benches. Even the door that J walks through was pure CGI. He was standing in front of a screen and the background opened for him. Layne was responsible for the creaking door sound.. The music in the outro is the karaoke track. The percussion and background vocals and it could be a piece on its own because it’s also gorgeous. You might want to check out their amazing cover of Nothing Else Matters by Metallica.

J None is in the US Navy for 5 yr (nearly 3 yrs done), originally stationed in Seattle. He was promoted to the premiere Navy chorus in Washington DC, which makes it easier for him to get back for some of the videos. J has done an original video recently - Am I Here. Worth getting that out. VoicePlay has done some incredible videos - Nothing Else Matters (Metallica), In the Air Tonight (Phil Collins), Creep (RadioHead), Hellfire (Hunchback of Notre Dame), I Can't Make You Love Me (Bonnie Raitt), We're Good (Dua Lipa), In the Hall of the Mountain King (Edvard Grieg 1875), a post-apocalyptic trilogy over a 3 yr period - Warriors (Imagine Dragons), Dream On (Aerosmith) and lastly Seven Nation Army (White Stripes), Sleeping in the Cold Below (WarFrame) which is kind of a space shanty - video game. Chicago heard about VoicePlay's Nothing Else Matters and they were invited to Chicago and Friends concert in Nov 17-18 last year. When the stage was being set up, they asked where to put the drums. Eli pointed to Layne. Oh. Chicago's trumpet player was sitting next to Geoff on stage just watching Geoff - How does he do that? I also love the Bass Gang. Was really excited for the Disney 4 although it sucked that Marwan couldn't get to the group in the Czech Republic. I was amazed at what he accomplished despite that handicap. Got to see you in Be Prepared!

One of the best perks for those of us that love VoicePlay and J together is that he is considerably closer to Florida now than when he was stationed in the Pacific NW. Much easier to hop on down to join in on a song! Many of us are hoping he comes back for good once he has finished his tour of duty. I think there is still 2 years to go.

Geoff did three B0 here and the first one in the beginning he held for 15 seconds. Some of the newer Voice Play that you may not have seen are: "Nothing Else Matters"( legendary band, 'Chicago', saw this one and reached out to Voice Play to sing two shows with them back in November), "In The Air Tonight", "Creep", "Seven Nation Army", "Hellfire", "Whisky In The Jar", and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". You will definitely want to check out Geoff's solo cover of "Jack's Lament" (Beyond amazing). J None is currently stationed in the Virginia/DC area so he has been able to sing frequently with them as a featured guest. I am not real sure what Eli is using for software or details of the production but Anthony Ray has some great Voice Play reactions that break it down and he explains it so well (I am sure the other Voice Players will give you great information too. I second Nothing Else Matters, as well as the entire post-apocalypse trilogy: Warriors, Dream On, and Seven Nation Army. Although, one of my favorites is still "I Can't Help Falling in Love With You." No costumes, just pure glorious vocals. That one and "True Colors" are heavenly. It's not what VP is most famous for (their brand is "the theater kids of acapella" for a reason) and songs like this don't get the same big numbers, but sometimes it's nice to strip away the fancy sets and costumes and listen to just their voices.

The fact that the Norse had what was basically "diss poetry" which were quite possibly sung, and diss tracks are now popular in rap, utilizing similar rhyme and meter... I mean... we can't say the Norse DID NOT invent an early form of rap music, right? Vikings have been associated in modern times with metal music, which they obviously did not have back then, when all along maybe they were spitting bars on those ships.

He keeps it positive).I could fill up all the comment space! Loved your reaction. I subscribed! I personally consider J. None still a member. I may not agree with all of your comments and criticisms, but they come from a reasoned and well-thought-out perspective. Maybe you're right in saying that they are starting to be pidgeon-holed into 'Sea-Shanty-singing group', but I think you could also say they were previously regarded as the 'theatrical Disney-themed group'. I was someone who thought the whole idea of being a 'patron' and paying a group or individual was a stupid idea since you could watch them for free...until I stumbled onto VoicePlay and then went on to find Geoff and PattyCake videos as well (and became a patron of all three). I think of VoicePlay as one of the most talented, fun and creative group of people I have ever been privileged to experience, and they so often take a song I either had never heard of before, or that I might have even actively disliked and have made me fall in love with it. I personally think that there is something inherently flawed with the youtube algorithm, and it just keeps getting increasingly worse over time. I notice more and more that I have to purposefully search for certain artists that I think youtube should know by now I would be very interested in seeing due to my past multiple views of them, and instead will be bombarded for weeks with tons of copycat videos on the most assinine of subjects simply because I clicked onto one 'short' by mistake.

So, per the behind the scenes video, it’s not exactly a greenscreen-but the backgrounds we see were being projected behind them as it was being filmed. The backgrounds were all designed by Eli in Unreal Engine which is used to create digital background for video games and occasionally film. They did a green screen in My Mother Told Me because we were still in Covid. But this one was projected through LED screens that were wall sized. They were appearing in front of that background. It was synched to the musical track so that if they had to re-do a section it would always look the same. The only real items that day were the benches and the tables. Everything else Eli designed. Even the door that J walked through - although Layne did do the sound for that.

Yes, please, more Voiceplay and Geoff. Maybe some Pattycake Productions? Subscribed in anticipation. Their latest one is Sleeping in the Cold Below from the video game Warframe. I'm old and not a gamer, but it doesn't matter. They are outstanding!! Geoff's voice? I know there are basses who can sing lower than him and higher. But I haven't heard another voice with the clarity and beauty of his.

If you'd like to see their less shanty-type songs get more attention, why not react to some of them? Nothing Else Matters, Golden Hour, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, In The Air Tonight, Creep, Hellfire, Whiskey in the Jar, and Seven Nation Army all fairly recent and excellent. (But don't miss Sleeping in the Cold Below just because it's shanty-esque; it's still 100% worth the watch.)

Not green screen here, it is explained elsewhere. J.none was originally the frontman for Navy band Northwest Passage so it was difficult fot him to get back with the guys much but then he was promosted to promoted to singing bass with the Sea Chanters in Washington.- and he has been able to get back with them more when on leave. Personally I love their versatility and I don't think they overdo the viking image. There was My Mother Told Me and this one, I don't think there has been another. .They've done at least as many game themes, actually more, with Halo, Dragonborn, Sleeping in the Cold Below, off the top of my head. And of course Disney. their most poplular ever was, I think, Moana but now they have done Hellfire, which is great.

You should watch and reply to VoicePlay's cover of My Mother Told Me. It was made before this and is another Viking themed song.

Something people dont notice is at 2:42 he hits a B0 but at 2:50 he slides up to an F#1 for not even a second then slides back down to a B0 Not tryna hate on Geoff and I find sliding up then back down more impressive than sustaining it Also Eli going up to around D5 in his verse is unreal

I have one argument I'd like your opinion on: The opening line. Peter Barber says they messed up and show Geoff singing in the video, but he's "not singing" the line. I say he is singing. Why? Because there are multiple VoicePlay songs where Geoff IS undeniably singing with everyone else and blends right in with them. Your thoughts?

Went back and listened and I can't seem to hear him or Layne singing it, but they're both "singing" in the video during that part. Do you know if VP themselves have commented on it?

VoicePlay's fan base knows them. We watch reactors to see Geoff break them. So I came to watch you for Voice Play. No offense, but their diversity means MORE types of people gather in and see different types of music. THEY are pushing the genre, not imprisoned by it.
