There seems to be a trend that “less is more”. Matt Burton won with less training. Kat Matthews has been doing this for years. Maybe the pros are overdoing it and wearing out their bodies.

Absolutely, no maybes! A big point made by Tim Noakes in the Lore of Running ... 40+ years ago. The great distance record-holders like David Bedford (10km WR, up to 322 km running/week), Derek Clayton (2 x 42.2km WB) and Ron Hill (official 42.2 WB) ALL had the best runs after enforced layoffs due to illness, failed at major games as massively over trained. No medals at all. Even Sam Laidlow said with a grin that his early 2023 season layoff helped him to win IM WC Nice. He is right. The pro's all over-train, even 24 h/week is madness. Rest is an important part of training. No doubt Fredono overtrained for Nice, but earlier won the T100 when he was coming back and thus much less.

I never got why Skipper has been a popular triathlete. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him deliver what everyone seems to say he is capable of.

  • @IvanChocron

@@lorenzo6734 I've seen all of that. Yet since the sub 7 project I've never seen him deliver a single good result. He can't even podium in a "normal" Ironman without a stacked field. People who no one knows their names finish the race before him.

But here you are commenting on him. Having said that it's clear that a number of older athletes are struggling results wise. It wasn't that long ago 8 hours got you a podium or even a win.

Yes, shocking. A hundred cameras but half the time commentators didn't seem to know who they were looking at. Ironman is all about the changes in the top 10 or even 15 but camera fixed on the boring bloke at the front. Missed Burton lapping the women's leader.

One of the most legendary triathlons in the Basque Country and today it has quite a stacked field. In the men's side almost every spanish top middle distance guys are running and in the women's side there sre the likes of Svenja Thoes, Steph Clutterbuck, former 4 time olympian Ainhoa Murua... It will be fun to see

    1. Kyle Smith / Taylor Knibb 2. Marten Van Riel / Ashleigh Gentle 3. Mathis Margirier / India Lee 4. Javier Gómez / Paula Findlay 5. Alistair Brownlee / Laura Philipp I might be quite biased with Javi but I think he can perform top level. He will definitely swim front pack and come back running. Besides, I can ser that his wrist injury can play a role in Magnus' race. Mu dark horses Aaron Royle and Ben Kanute for the male and Imogen Simmonds and Marta Sánchez for the female.
