    it changes a little depending on the thickness of the plastic I tend to set the heaters to around 3 and let the heat soak in to the plastic but when everything is setup only around 3 minuets if you check my other videos there is one that is shot in real time from setup to forming and it only takes a few minuets

    I haven't found that if you watch the video close the plastic acts more like a sheet of rubber when its still under heat Im not saying it wouldn't happen with different types of plastic but in those cases I would do a couple of test pieces to get an average time and use a digital heat gun

    This system uses a domestic vacuum cleaner they are great for plastics up to 1.5mm thick after that you really need a vacuum pump tank based system to get a strong enough vacuum for thicker materials like 3mm abs often used in storm trooper armour I do make that type of system as well checkout kzread.info/dash/bejne/rKKAsKWycdOumKg.html its a little steam punk and costs around £600 but that's a lot less than a £20.000 commercial system hope this helps Thanks Mike

    Another question I've seen 2 versions. The lid that holds the plastic form to be shaped.....sit flat direct on box or larger opening to push down below the puck and around d the outside of the box????

  • @michaelgreenhouse2044
    @michaelgreenhouse2044 Жыл бұрын

    ye the ones you see that the plastic sits on the box and the plastic is usually heated by ceramic heaters in an overhead box that slides on rails so that the puck can be raised from below are usually professional industrial formers these systems don't have an air tank so the puck is raised on the bed and seals when the plastic has been pulled around only leaving a little air to be vacuumed out an internal vacuum pump sucks the plastic tight when cool they often have a facility to blow a little air back between the plastic and the puck helping it to release the type that has a frame that holds the plastic then pulled own around the wooden base on large format systems this can be useful to make adjustable sized frames so you can set the frame to the size of the interchangeable bed you are using then when the plastic is pushed down it seals on the edge of the bed again mostly industrial

    @@clintlucas7604 I have built both and found that when using a vacuum pump you need a reservoir tank to give you the first big suck to pull the plastic down and then the vacuum pump finishes off with the strongest but slower vacuum pulling the plastic into the fine detail so having a pipe that is short and just a hole with a few groves gives less area for the tank to empty before the pump kicks in ware as if you are using a vacuum cleaner based former then then having a gap bellow a holed board allows the vacuum cleaner to build a constant vacuum across the area and draw the plastic down evenly this is just my own thoughts from my own experience and others may have different views

  • @michaelgreenhouse2044
    @michaelgreenhouse20442 жыл бұрын

    Hi thanks for the interest I was using 4 charcoal burning stoves little 1kw ring stoves heat was set to about half but gave a nice even heat over the plastic as they emit a lot of infrared heat , the small low cost vacuum pump doesn't vacuum fast enough on its own to pull the plastic before it cools so by sucking the air out of the tank gives a vacuum reservoir that can be used quickly and the pump can still suck the plastic tight at the finish

  • @michaelgreenhouse2044
    @michaelgreenhouse20445 жыл бұрын

    I usually only recommend using sheets of 1.5mm but I have used thicker sheets the results will depend on the strength of your vacuum cleaner and with thicker material you will need to heat your material until it is very soft also where possible warm the form the plastic is going to be shaped around this will give you more time to vacuum the plastic and as the plastic is forming you can heat gently from above with a heat gun like the ones used for paint stripping but you have to do this carefully so as not to burn the plastic

    you should be able to use the 3mm acrylic its only fine details that wouldnt be picked up it may be better to use a clear hips plastic or petg as when you heat acrylic it can form bubbles in the material and 1.5mm will give a firm shell
