Hi! I'm a narrative and commercial cinematographer based in the UK, and in my spare time, I'm creating video essays surrounding my favourite films, cinematographers, directors and genres.
I'm currently trying to branch out a bit and create videos that I just haven't had the opportunity to yet (for obvious reasons), but if you have any ideas for a video you would like to see, leave a comment anywhere.
Welcome!

Fine, I'll watch it again on Netflix, Australia, love this movie.
Brilliant video and brilliant breakdown.
Netflix has made some great films, but from what I’m seeing, most of them are pure trash.
What's the effect at 5:18? That's the question that actually brought me to this video, it's around 1:04:20 in the movie.
Nice explanation. I had the honour of working on all 3 of Nolan's Batman movies and Inception and Dunkirk In the Stunt Dept. He is a great Director who know what he wants and how he wants to shoot it.
Instant sub, you should have 100k more, easy.
This is what cinema is all about. Something worthwile. Something beautiful. Something funny and something profound. It's the essence of life. This is more than entertainment. It's life itself, unfolding before your open eyes, writing itself on your mind. Seems too much? Well, not for me. ^^
Sorry did not enjoy this film and did not like the dark tones of the photography, there is a reason why no one has done this sort of thing before or after this film. Interstellar is a masterpiece that did NOT need to use odd photography to try and stand out. The Arrival is not a film that comes up when a space or Scifi film discussion come up its just about forgotten. 2001, Dark Star or Star Wars now those are space classics and always will be. Films like the Arrival are more of your cult fan type film or artsy fartsy films. Remember we all agree to disagree or not everyone has the same likes or dislikes. As did not enjoy the Avatar, enjoyed Prometheus. Loved Alien but not so much Aliens. 1958 Dunkirk film is great but the 2017 Dunkirk is horrible, with Nolan's PC reasons for calling the Germans only as the "Enemy" he also heavily whitewashed the film as well, go look that up 😉
Oh oh oh! Pom Pom just wrote, directed, produced, and distributed a movie with his cell phone!
can you please named the web site that shown in 1:24 Minute thank you so much
I was lucky enough to see this originally in theaters not knowing who the heck Denis Villenueve even was at the time and was so surprised and satisfied when I walked out of the theater. I agree the lighting, and style kept it grounded all the way through and could have easily gone into the realm of gothic/sacrificial/spiritual tones with the color and set choices. This is a gem and I hope we can get something original and smaller scale like this again in the future from Denis and Deakins. Hopefully after Dune, we can see some more passion projects that are not as grand.
I know how you feel about not wanting to talk about hating films and wanting to appreciate them instead. You can dislike a well-made film and still appreciate the artistry. You can like a poorly made film and still acknowledge its faults. I think people confuse liking a film with recognizing its qualities and achievements.
Best cinematography of the 21st century by a mile.
The double-shadow thing is a good example of why I liked Deakins a bit more pre-digital than after. With film there's an element of having to ride the medium and despite the best of technology or deepest of expertise, a bit of guesswork and compromise involved, and he was a master of that balance -- though it probably stressed him out. His work post-Alexa is also fantastic don't get me wrong but very clean and precise, and I miss that bit of chaos.
I have released my short both in colour and black and white. One viewer told me he actually preferred the b/w version, because it's a kind of dark, Noir type plot. I have yet to have the guts to shoot in b/w from scratch.
Great Video! A lot useful Information.
Son 40 yılda gördüğüm en değişik güzel, olağandışı karakteri canlandırıyor kızımız AUDREY TAUTOU,bravo ve teşekkürler böyle romantik ve sıradışı aşk öyküleri dolu Film sunduğunuz için ( turkish)Ame'lie ❤❤❤
Imagine a film being shot at 240 fps that would be ten times it's old standard.
The human eye can only see roughly up to 60 fps so it'd be completely pointless
I think a nice transitional framerate should be 36 fps. Seems a logical step up from 24 fps. Not too much flicker, not too much wasted media, not too much computer CPU or camera power needed. Let's just do 36 and be done with it for another 15-20 years.
Would you be interested in having a technological and philosophical discussion about the adverse psychological effects of colour grading on hypersensitive individuals? I have been so distressed by teal-and-orange and desaturation that I have not been to the cinema or watched any new TV shows for 16 years.
I'm impressed with not using artificial lighting.... but where there any white cards used to bounce light onto the actors?
Hobbit and gemini are how films look on ACID
I had an opportunity to go to a screening. Seeing it on the big screen was intense and amazing. There was a Q and A after with Iñárritu and DiCaprio.
So grateful for this content!
The Movie would look different if it was shot on 35mm Film. SY definitly has a very good taste. The Issue is that most people today don't have the viewing experience and most DPs don't make an effort like SY. So in the end, true art is in danger because of convienience without any love, we see that clearly today. Seeing the latest state of Art Movies make safe to say, digital never could replace film, never.
Why have you left out two very important people in the creation of the IMAX camera, namely Ron Jones and my father Valentine Temple. My father was the engineer who made this camera possible from Brisbane Australia.
I think he would have used to double dolly for when Mookie throws the trash can
Watched dune part 2 in IMAX. I gotta tell you, it was awe inspiring, amazing.... during the sandworms scene, whole theatre was shaking and I felt it in my chest
everything is awesome, very helpful 💗 Where can i find the notion template please !!
Yioo
Greatest Movie, I have ever seen.
Deakins says that cinematography should be subtle too but his work is ironic, I don't think the visuals are intriguing because we are specifically looking for them.
Love this list :) but no women :(
Welcome back dude!
Glad to be uploading again!
tarantino be like: all for me and all for you
Michael Bay: One for me. One for me. One for me. One for me. One for me.
Kaufman?

Great Vid!
The Shape of Water looks much better in colour, as does Parasite. Don't get me wrong, I love black and white; Roma and The Lighthouse look amazing
I have found for watching at home I love 1.78 for my copies of films. It gives the most enveloping feeling in the right scenes
Thanks for answering the question in the title during the first 6 seconds.
my favourite, favourite, favourite movie of all time
Please lose that really annoying grey on white animation in the background; it's incredibly distracting, especially when the foreground is in a wide aspect ratio. I struggle to understand how anyone who is commenting on visuals thought that was a good idea.
All comes down to copyright
@@AngusDaviesDP Aah, OK, the 'framed picture' thing. OK, if you can't lose it, how about reducing the flicker?
In the scene where Kat is shot, protagonist"s side is lit red like the red team in the assault while the inverted Kat side is blue, like the pincer assault inverted team.... clever.
Thanks for sharing!
what you mean with '' zero breathing '' ? in 1:04
Rad overview man! Wondering could you drop in some pictures of the cameras used? Maybe some arrows and diagrams which direction the lights were facing to help noobs like me understand better lol
Even compressed to shit on YT and being played on a worn out laptop...the beauty of the film shines through. There is so much texture and richness to the visuals of this film. The very first thing that made my heart melt for this film within the first 10mins was how gorgeous it looked. An then I go online and the "THE BATMAN IZ TWO DARK LUUKING DUUUURRRRR" and my heart sinks. I can't believe we've been so conditioned by the Insurance Commercial aesthetic of modern blockbusters that something as visually revelatory at The Batman gets "too dark" accusations.
People are just used to 24p. Its funny because 24p is considered terrible by 100% of gamers
A John Constantine film will fit in with this style of filming
The opening sequence of this film with those tremendous landscapes and Tommy Lee Jones narrating in that west Texas cowboy's drawl is about as pure cinema as there is. I have the DVD and always play that opening a few times before I watch the rest.
