How Robert Yeoman shot The French Dispatch

Фильм және анимация

The French Dispatch is the most Wes Anderson film we've ever had, and to thank for that, we have Robert Yeoman, one of the best and most established cinematographers working today. With a mix of French New Wave and modernism, Anderson and Yeoman have managed to elevate the visual style of The Grand Budapest Hotel, and give us something we all wanted.
So, in today's video, I briefly go over the equipment Yeoman used, look at the influence behind the look, talk about the visual continuity between the three stories and Anderson’s films as a whole, and then delve into each major story, looking at the couple aspects that I like about the cinematograph style and what it adds to the story.
As always if you have a recommendation for an analysis, let me know below!

as an extra in the film it's so funny to realize, only now in a youtube video, that I'm in much more shots than I initially thought

Interesting breakdown! Agree with it being one of Anderson's more visually enticing films even though personally felt it would have benefitted from being in an anthology style limited series rather than a film (not that every film needs to be TV or vice versa). Would be intrigued to hear your thoughts on Darjeeling, certainly one of the more underrated Anderson films in my opinion. Look forward to seeing what you make next!

I understand i am yet another comment to you, simply passing, but i beg of you, me a human being in australia, i plead you to continue these videos, it's so well done and compacted and proceeds at an incredibly understandable rate, i'm writing this as i'm watching, and i'm usually not one to jump the gun, but your videos are amazing whether you decide to continue or not, i urge you to be proud of yourself if you aren't already. Your production quality rivals the indepthcine channel.

He doesnt necessarily do symmetrical, instead the movies are shot as if they were drawings done with a measure. Straight lines going into one point the decorations being put into the most visually appealing spots. Btw i forgot what a measure was and had to google it for a youtube comment

I dig your channel! I just wanted to let you know as a fairly regular audience member that I tuned out of this video around the 2 minute mark. The titles of each section would have been sufficient without the further description. I found myself tapping the screen to see if this was a 35 minute video. I saw that it wasn’t, but my attention was already broken and I had gotten behind on what you were saying. I was only mildly interested in the subject matter but I probably would have finished the video if I didn’t feel so bogged down there. Forgive me if this is a very verbose critique (by now I could likely have seen another three minutes of the video, I know). I just feel like people ought to give constructive feedback to creators so you can at least be aware of what at least one audience member’s experience is like. 🙏🏻 Edit: * thanks for the thoughtful and creative content! *

Yes! It is so incredible and a mazing and I can't explain enough how much I love this film! It is pretty slow, but once you realize Wes Anderson did that on purpose, to make it feel like you are reading a magazine, it becomes so much more superb. I highly recommend! Very artsy and funny, this is an amazing film.
