    I recently started my blacksmithing journey, I had been watchlng videos of more traditional blacksmithing techniques and just discovered your videos on ornamental blacksmithing. You are an excellent instructor, your expanations and techniques are amazing. Thank you very much for what you have provided.

    1st. I'm not having any luck finding documentation that miners worked in the dark. I guess if blind people can sword fight in the movies it's possible but I'm not finding your claim credible. Can you document it? 2nd. That's a HUGE Sticking Tommy. The originals that miners wore were 4" or less in length and made of much thinner material. I would imagine yours would be impossible to use on a hat while swinging a hammer.

    1rsr: I can't "document" the information about the miners working in the dark. I heard it at the Tombstone Good Enough mine tour. I guess that's how legends and myths are born. 2nd: sticking tommies were produced in various shapes and sizes. There were small ones measuring around 3-4" and there were large ones being big as 16". The early ones were hand forged and more robust. Later they were mass produced using wire as the material. Here are 3 links with reference to sizes. www.bisbeeminingandminerals.com/miners-candleholders www.ebth.com/items/9923760-wrought-iron-sticking-tommy-candle-holders-including-one-marked-nathan-varney www.bargainjohn.com/product/miners-iron-forged-candle-holder-stamped-montana/#:~:text=Measures%2010%201%2F2%E2%80%B3%20Length,Have%20questions%20about%20this%20product%3F&text=This%20item%20can%20be%20shipped I held several original pieces in my own hand before I decided to make the ones you see I'm the video.

    Man what do i have to do to be able to forge with an 8 lbs hammer? And with such good control! Really impressive! I'm really a beginner but sometimes even my 1 kg hammer becomes tiring real quick

    26 years of practice. I wasn't always that efficient. It took me about a year and a half of almost daily forging just to build up the necessary muscles. Just keep at it and you'll get there eventually.

    Sorry but your comment makes no sense. What cast hammer are you talking about? Also to be able to drift you need to cut or at least have an existing hole.

    Thanks for the nice comment. I use a propane forge and for accurate heat placement I use a torch. I have an oxy-acetalyne set, but oxy-propane works just as good. I have a rosebud burner for larger pieces.

    Love the video, but you should really stop relying on autofocus on your camera. Got a headake from all the focusing in and out and out of focus video.

  • @DesertOwlForge
    @DesertOwlForge Жыл бұрын

    Unfortunately, that's the only way I can shoot these. I tried manual focus but then you move the objects around it doesn't come out right. I film alone, set up the camera, and when I bring the piece to the anvil, it gets out of focus most of the time. I can't wait and manually focus because the piece cools down.

    I tried to flatten out a round piece of 3/8" rebar but as it got thinner the flattened area began curving off to the left. Is that because I never rotated the piece 180° and kept striking only one side with the hammer?
