I find it somewhat amusing that you would be surprised that a more modern sport would be more effective/efficient than the older sport from which it evolved. If one is studying a new hobby/sport/martial art, wouldn't it be prudent to find the most effective one?

I think they didn't do ropes in a ring because it looks to me like they were going for the American 19th century bare-knuckle vibe, which most historical documentation indicates was done in simple earth squares like this one.

3:56 an us vs them mentality towards other martial arts is a detrimental mindset for any martial artist to have, it stunts growth and personal development. Learning from other martial arts is how you become a good and well rounded martial artist. For example, I do goju ryu karate, do i think its the best system? no, because the best system doesn't exist, i also did some judo, shotokan karate, wing chun, and i plan on learning shuai jiao (chinese wrestling) one day, why do i add other martial arts on top of my main thing (goju ryu karate)? because martial arts is fun and learning other things can help you understand the things you already learned in a new light and deepen your understanding

I find i cool that the most effective fighting styles either originate of are directly evolved from arts from Japan, Europe,or Thailand. Either grappling or striking.

At 7:28 you nail the key strength of BJJ. The sport is constantly evolving, adopting new techniques that work and abandoning techniques that don’t. There is no dogma about techniques that are not allowed for any other reader than safety. Young ones may feel invincible and frown up on “safety”, but once you are getting close to 50 and have mortgage to pay and family to feed, you will care about safety. Yet, if your partner is roughly the same size and OK with a rougher roll, you can go pretty hard. But as explained in the video, the purpose is learning, not just winning one match. Longer term injuries will accumulate and people will drop off from the sport. Having said this, I would definitely visit a catch wrestling club or even a wrestling club if there were a way for older non-national-champion to start the sport.

And the biggest thing that wrestling will teach is skilled motion under full fighting intensity. It's one of the same key reasons--often cited as the biggest one depending on who you ask--why wrestling is the biggest "feeder" discipline on top of MMA... despite lacking strikes, despite lacking submissions. Part of it is the literal tactical stuff, e.g. "dictating where the fight is held," etc. etc. But a huge part is the intensity of the training, coupled with the fact of its complexity (boxing might be as intense, but more limited in diversity of skills). Then, adding striking or submissions to someone training with that physical and mental intensity is a piece of cake for them. HEMA matches *could* be contested with such intensity--but are unlikely to be. Both because of safety, and because, playing at weapons, there's the superficial understanding that such intensity often isn't *necessary* even in real life, simulating conditions where a single strike can kill. (Which still is cautionary; even if you're the better fencer against a complete noob and would win 99 times out of a hundred, it doesn't help you if that hundredth time is today. ;) ) Nevertheless, to develop--still understanding the consequences of a bad day at the odds--the utmost level of martial art/sport? You need (1) a huge talent pool participating, so you (2) have ultra-high-level athletes in the mix, and (3) they are going at it as absolutely balls-out, at least in one category of competition, as is possible. HEMA is nowhere near that yet, and has to recognize these requirements if it aspires to be.

I understand what Jesse was doing and agree with it to an extent. His opponent was a bit of a joke, no offense to him (but would be interesting to see Jesse do that again to him a year later). But that's because he's brand new. And newsflash, the only people that are truly separate objectively in skill and technique are 4 stripe white belts and higher. Generally speaking, throughout the entire time of being a white belt in jiu-jitsu all the way until you get your blue belt, you're just figuring out how to move, defend, attack, and how not to screw yourself. The problem is, as a white belt, you tend to find ways to screw yourself moreso than what you should be doing correctly. ESPECIALLY attacking. In summary, you suck at BJJ when carrying a white belt almost the entire time until it finally clicks BIG TIME like 3 or 4 stripes later. In my experience. 😅

Judo and Catch borrowed techniques from each other when they had a rivalry in Japan. I don’t know who came up with Ude Garame or Double wrist lock. It’s all combining.

I hate when catch wrestlers still talk about the leg locks and feel as if they have tyne edge against jiu-jitsu. It to took garry tonon back to Karl Gotch, or even farmer burns.... their jaws would drop and they'd be amazed at his skill level. He'd tell them he was going to heel hook them an then do it. He'd be running their practices by the end of the day

By the spelling of his last name, it's clear he was of Polish descent but much of Poland was within the Russian empire at the time. Slavic warriors, be they Russian, Ukrainian or Polish, have saved western civilization numerous times but often western Europe neglects to recognize the heroism and accomplishments of the Slavic people. Glad to see this video and the roundabout acknowledgement of the enormous impact of a Slavic warrior!

I don't disagree. Certainly one valid strategy is to use the weapons so you can come to the grappling with an advantage, though it's not the only strategy. But people come because they want to learn how to use a sword. Make 'em wrestle and no one's going to show up. Even something as simple as locking up and trying to move your opponent around turns people off. Also no one wants to learn wrestling on cement, and that's what we train on 8 months out of the year. Another advantage that swords have is that you can learn to fence mostly practicing by yourself while I don't think there are many useful wrestling katas that I know of. (Happen to be wrong on that point)

look up the matches against the founds of Gracie bjj and catch wresters. Gracie's were dominated, and they resorted to jumping and beating in the catch wresters in the street with weapons because they were embarrassed. They did that multiple times to different grapplers.

ARMA is unironically better than HEMA in every way. HEMA elitism always existed against those guys "they dont do real fencing, they make it all up" was what I always heard. Yet when I looked into them, they seemed to act more like athletes than anyone in HEMA did. Then I met the guys at an event and WOW were they impressive, after HEMA's online "community" decided to do a politically charged purge and started harassing random youtubers, and after these political clubs began showing up at tournaments attempting to get clubs disqualified, I was absolutely done with those clowns who were more interested in boxing phantoms than learning a discipline. I have NEVER seen this kind of childish shit in any other martial art, because other martial arts respect themselves and understand their purpose, these HEMA goons are literally just sword hipsters.

You are very ignorant in the Internatal arts. You are a puncher, kicker of low understanding. Dillman is an odd one that comes off poorly. Learn to research properly and TEST PEOPLE DIRECTLY YOURSELF. NOT from videos. You film and test them personally. You can tell nothing from looking at videos.
