    You are not answering her question. You stubbornly presume there is nonetheless a way to retrieve childhood memory. But if trauma happened when child was a baby or toddler, it's certain the memory is not retrievable, or maybe there is no single event but continuum. What do you do then?

    From your comment I see that you don't fully understand the Adaptive Information Processing Model on which EMDR Therapy is based. Infant and early childhood memories are stored in memory networks in a form that was developmentally appropriate. For example, an infant exposed to angry exchanges between parents, will store these memories emotionally and somatically. In later life, when accessing this, they may have a representative image which is a way of trying to make sense of it.

    @@MichaelPatersonOBE Great reply. Respectful thank you. So it's not only I that don't understand AIP but also 5 EMDR therapists I worked with to a different degree here around Toronto. They were looking for factual memory(ies) only. I can understand that coming from training on big-T EMDR treatment they would look for the same in childhood. Nonetheless I have lots of as you said memories stored emotionally or somatically. Coming up with a representative image is something I haven't tried. Is there reference I could read? Your reply is very encouraging for me as it gives credible hope that I can apply EMDR to my traumas. But I have to work with knowledgeable therapist.

    Jim Knipe 'EMDR Toolbox' is excellent. Another good book is Van der Hart, Boon, & Steele 'Coping With Trauma Related Dissociation'.

    I would try the same steps I described, using these for sensations anywhere in the body. If, however, the sensation is in the throat or jaw, and it is not shifting spontaneously, try asking firstly if there are words that feeling needs to say.

    Thank you for this video. I knew I wanted to do some inner child work with my client, but I wasn't sure where to put it into the process. I also appreciate the guidance as far as what if hugging the little child is too much. Brilliant.

    I find anger to be an emotion and rage to be an energy state and I try to help clients differentiate the two because we need pro social anger to allow us to know what needs to change and to express that. Anger is not a survival energy state like rage. Rage is desperation-driven energy used to save a life/self or to fight off a bear/human or to lift a car off of a human being, but when it’s sitting in the body after trauma, and hasn’t been resolved, it pops up in self sabotage and other non-prosocial ways.

    I found this example very distressing. I think I have CPTSD. Deep down, I don't trust anyone. I only really feel at peace and whole with animals, dogs, birds, etc. I would have to have an imaginary dog reassuring my inner child.

    Question, what are you thoughts on facilitating the somatic process if the client isn’t getting there themselves. For example, after many sets the bubble in the throat is still there. Can you invite the client to try yawning or burping?

    Yawning or burping might work. Do consider that a sensation in the throat which persists could be 'words unspoken'. By saying what needs said could release this.     Resourcing is something we do in Phase 2, and we do use BLS. The thing to remember that in Phase 2 we do slower, shorter sets of BLS - 8-10 passes is sufficient. The faster, longer sets are reserved for Phases 4-6, the reprocessing phases. BLS can be activating, therefore by controlling the speed, and length of set in Phase 2, we can pick up if our client links to maladaptively stored material when we are trying to install a resource.

    Hi, does emdr therapy work on some one with Aphantasia, if it does how can the therapy be adapted when someone cannot bring up images of the traumatic event.

    It does. There are multiple associated channels which impact how the maladaptive memory is stored, the image is only one small piece. In your EMDR manual, you will see that in Phase 3 you ask about the image, but then are directed: If there is no image, ask, "When you think of that experience, what do you get?" This allows the client to access other sensory features such as smell, taste, and sounds.

    there just isn't any robust evidence supporting emdr or any other therapy - try reading William M Epstein's three key books - its actually dangerous nonsense. if that upsets anyone simply tap in a resource or go to your safe place.

    My therapist and i cant find the root cause for my panic feelings/agoraphobia.. I get panic feelings at the usual agoraphobia places like traffic lights, bus etc. If im longer than 1 or 2 hours from home i panic. EMDR got me from housebound to doing little things. Before my diagnose i remember still doing fun stuff but when i enter the room i get fight or flight feelings. Still cant figure out what the root cause is

    From experience, anxiety/panic when people are a distance from home could be the key. The meaning this has for them, in terms of a negative self-belief, can bring up certain emotions and body sensations. This feeling state, in turn, has linked back to earlier, similar experiences. The reason for this is because memories are stored by association.

    This is utterly unethical. You should not be letting clients come to believe horrific false memories and then process through them. You should insist that EMDR is only used on known true traumas.

    It is NOT about having client's believe the 'memory' is true. It is about targeting for reprocessing the WAY the memory is stored. For example, Dr Francine Shapiro, the originator of EMDR Therapy, wrote about a client who recalled a memory of being raped by Satan. This was clearly disturbing to the client, so the way the memory was stored was targeted for reprocessing. During reprocessing, the client heard the Devil's voice - she recognised it as the voice of her father's friend, and then realised that he was wearing a mask. There is nothing unethical about healing trauma that way. Those who understand EMDR Therapy, and work with it, share that view.

    They already believe the false memory, though. Therapists can’t exactly be ethical by refusing to treat crazy people. Nor can anyone force acceptance of reality upon a psychotic person.

    Vertical eye movements done slowly, and in short sets, such as 6 up and down movements, can ease frontal lobe discomfort. When reprocessing, we need to create bilateral movements, akin to what happens in REM sleep. A study published in Nature (Baek et al,2019) indicates that bilateral eye movements lead to a deactivation of the amygdala in a fear-inducing situation.

    This is not true.I have a client that becomes very stressed by doing their own tapping. They also can’t do eye movement BLS. I do it (tapping on her knees) and it works. In this one case. The person is benefiting greatly from doing EMDR with me. My client is female and so am I. The tapping is with her is with her consent.

    Saying this isn't true is based on your observation with one client, it seems. Please don't reject what is applicable for many. You advocate tapping a client's knees with her permission - that could be fine in many cases, but what about the client who has past memories outside conscious awareness where inappropriate touch started with touching their knees and progressed from there! As a therapist we need to be wary of such things and mitigate against them For example a physical barrier (e.g. cushion) on the client's lap and tapping their hands which are resting on it.
