Reprocessing anger and rage ego states with EMDR Therapy

In EMDR Therapy, anger can arise as part of the reprocessing and it resolves spontaneously. Sometimes it becomes stuck and requires a cognitive interweave to shift it, or working with a rage ego state to permit the move to adaptive resolution. Join Dr Michael Paterson OBE, EMDR Eurrope Accredited Senior Trainer, as he guides you in how to handle these situations.

I have been doing emdr with my therapist. About 5 sessions, some sessions fitting about 4 emdr sets in one session. I've been walking around waiting to fight anyone or anything. Major rage! Totally not feeling safe around others lately, as I want to lash out. I know I never will, but the feelings feel so real and so in the moment ,that it takes everything in me to find something else to focus on. I see my therapist every two weeks. Thank you for this video it's helped explain what could be happening within.

@@joshuasanders2449 do you have anything at your house like an old phone book, or anything you could just rip to shreds? There are videos on KZread doing Reiki, meditation and talk to help as it's coming up. In a real crisis see if your therapist will allow you to phone them. I find just listening to his words help me. Forrest Hanson/Rick Hanson has great videos on all kinds of issues. Look up SELF SOOTHING too. Best of luck in your journey.🙏🏼

I find anger to be an emotion and rage to be an energy state and I try to help clients differentiate the two because we need pro social anger to allow us to know what needs to change and to express that. Anger is not a survival energy state like rage. Rage is desperation-driven energy used to save a life/self or to fight off a bear/human or to lift a car off of a human being, but when it’s sitting in the body after trauma, and hasn’t been resolved, it pops up in self sabotage and other non-prosocial ways.

It sounds like ego state work is similar to chair work? Very interesting video, thanks! I have a client who is experiencing rage due to infidelity from the partner so this has been very helpful

I have used the anger/revenge protocol with two clients and on both occasions the anger/desire for revenge did not really reduce as it was not good enough for them to only imagine doing it. They both said they would want that revenge in real life. How can this be addressed?

I wouldn't be able to guide you on this without knowing details of the cases; this forum isn't the place, as you know. Best you take these to supervision with an Accredited EMDR Consultant.

What I wouldn't recommend is encouraging our clients to do it for real! If the straightforward visualization doesn't work, I would try asking the client to do a particular movement at the same time - e.g. punching a cushion, or squeezing tightly a rolled up towel.
