Thank you Dr. Paterson. I will share this with my counselor. However, when I am away from my counseling sessions, how can I perform self-EMDR to avoid urges to indulge in negative behavior (AUD). I am currently practicing self-bilateral stimulation, and it has intensely helped me with anxiety and sleeping.

Hello Gus. When working on past events or urge reduction using EMDR Therapy, links can be made which have a strong emotional and/or somatic response. When this occurs it can be potentially overwhelming for some people. If trying to do reprocessing on yourself you run the risk of getting stuck. For your safety please only do the reprocessing when you are with your therapist.

@@MichaelPatersonOBE Thank you. That is sound advice, and I will bring it up with my counselor at my next session. I can see a future need for more guidance on self-EMDR, because it is so powerful, and may be out of reach to most people for a lack of trained counselors per geographic region, and the cost factor. Ultimately, properly guided (conducted) self-care makes a lot of sense. “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.”

Question, what are you thoughts on facilitating the somatic process if the client isn’t getting there themselves. For example, after many sets the bubble in the throat is still there. Can you invite the client to try yawning or burping?

Yawning or burping might work. Do consider that a sensation in the throat which persists could be 'words unspoken'. By saying what needs said could release this. Also, have a loo at the video at this link. It is about working with resistant somatic sensations.. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qXx70dWSd9nJj9I.html

@Taureanfitnes Are you an EMDR therapist? If not, I can see why you might feel that thinking about how strong the urge is might not seem to reduce the urge. However, in the context of actual EMDR therapy, it's much more than just the assessment of how strong the urge is. The value associated with the "level" of urge is more a gauge to help the clinician decide when to move to the next phase, in which installation of the positive cognition (PC) occurs. Think of it almost like a thermometer: When it gets low enough, we know we can move to the next part of the intervention.

Has there been discussion on allowing coaches to use this type of protocol in their practice?

There are professional bodies which accredit EMDR trainers and their trainings (e.g. EMDR Europe, EMDR Asia, EMDR Int'l Assoc). These bodies limit access to trainings to mental health professionals. Some people not meeting the eligibility criteria have tried doing heir own version of EMDR, and called it that, even though they don't follow the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) Model and three-pronged approach of Past-Present-Future. My caveat therefore is for those who have not had the proper training - don't try to do this. Those readers with experience of EMDR Therapy will know, all too well, that clients can make connections which were unexpected.

@@EMDRMasterclassHello there , I have done many emdr session with a therapist. I recently connected my habit of smoking to its root memory wich is the first cigarette I smoked. I am thinking to emdr it to stop smoking but other things are mo urgent now. But I wonder , will it stop ? I mean past trauma creates a nervousness and we are compesating by smoking. Want all the nervousness and fidgeting be surficed in an other behaviour after quitting smoking ? It is a good strategy to leave the emdr for quitting it for the end ?

Hello Antonis This video is about reducing the urge that clients may have to engage in a particular behaviour which is detrimental to that person, but gives some reward for doing it. This Urge Reduction protocol, as described, is done as early intervention (Phase 2 in EMDR Therapy) to help the client cope, just as calming and/or soothing exercises are introduced too. The underlying cause is the 'trauma' (big 'T' or small 't') which created the physiological and emotional response that the behaviour helps regulate. I would hazard a guess that taking your first cigarette was the learning that this can help regulate you, but the 'trauma' it was regulating preceded it.

@@MichaelPatersonOBE firstly thanks for your responce. I get what you mean. This protocol is about reducing the urge and not about finding the root trauma that caused the need of regulation . I do believe that by doing emdr on the first smoke and feeling the feelings again that would help to disassociate that as a coping mechanism. And also would might help to get closer to the root cause.
