He’s saying that any occurrence is determined by external factors or some part of the brain, but he is just leaving out the possibility of it being determined by a will, then using the circular reasoning he concludes there is no free will. It’s a mixture of circular reasoning and sneaking the premise. If you argue on this front without acknowledging his dishonesty you tacitly accept that free will can’t determine anything, which is like tacitly accepting that it doesn’t exist, thus losing the game already. The whole thing is a dishonest way of concluding an assumption. There is not real argument in his argument.

Either, you’re a super complex machine that only deals in output based upon input, and therefore, incapable of reason or feeling, OR, You’re a thinking, feeling, reasoning person with agency. I am always wary of institutions that enforce rigid heirarchies instead of a more collaborative, egalitarian system - they are prone to totalist regime. Enforcing strict gender roles and the heirarchy of god - man - woman naturally leads to people thinking of women as in some way less. I think saying "men and women are equal" and "women must be subservient to men" are incompatible thoughts. Many other commenters mention the dimunition of church attendance and ordained women in the same breath - linking the two. I suspect that there are other, larger factors at work here, such as greater and easier distribution of knowledge, the very real and measurable benefits of secular organisations and so forth. I recall reading several anecdotal theories that religions' impotence in the face of a worldwide disease that killed and is killing and injuring millions had an effect on attendance. I'd be curious to see if there are any studies to try and quantify the reasons.

🐟 25. THE ROLE OF FEMALES: Women are fortunate because they are BORN with a job: Daughter. Wife. Mother. Females normally have no role in public life. Exceptions to this rule are relatively rare. For instance, women may work in the arts (singers, actors, and dancers, which often demand female players), or as maids or nurses, both of which are feminine duties, providing it has no detrimental effect on their PRIMARY function, as daughters, wives, and mothers. So, a female’s fundamental role is to serve her MASTERS (any man in her family circle), even from a relatively young age, by performing domestic duties and raising her children. Barren women (heterosexual or otherwise) are extremely unfortunate, but can still devote their lives to serving their husband, father, grandfather, uncles, or in the event that none of those men are extant, adult male cousins. Studies have shown that the more a woman deviates from this innate societal function, the less she is fulfilled. The phrase, “Cat Lady”, says it all. As a general rule, women should be protected in the home, and never wander-out alone. They should FULLY cover their bodies in the presence of post-pubescent males outside the family circle. Even the prostitutes in some nations wear veils in public, even if out of fear of reprisal. Having lived the eremitic life of a monastic priest for a few decades, I can attest to the importance of keeping one’s home clean and tidy. It is obvious to me that housekeeping is very much a full-time occupation, and that if I were to neglect my domestic chores, my health and comfort would greatly diminish. As would be expected of a person in my position, I follow a strict diet and am obsessive in regards to hygiene. Without a spouse, the onus is on me to maintain my residence in a prim and proper manner, even though it results in me spending less time teaching religion as a member of the Holy Priesthood (The World Teacher, in my particular case). Therefore, the role of a housewife is of PARAMOUNT importance, and must never be discounted by anybody, particularly feminist ideologues. The following chapter deals with feminism. The ONLY reason I have resided alone for most of my adult life is due to the fact that there is a severe scarcity of decent women in my country, and indeed the entire world, what to speak of holy and righteous women. Unfortunately, few women, particularly in the more affluent nations, any longer receive adequate training in the connubial arts. In my former marriages, I was forced to perform most household chores. In recent centuries, due to various factors (FEMINISM, in particular), women have become so degraded, that is it practically impossible to find an example of an ideal woman. Therefore, in order to reference examples of such a woman, one is forced to refer to figures from ancient myths. Mariam, the mother of Lord Jesus Christ, and Devī Sītārānī, the wife of Śri Rāja Rāma, King of Ayodhya, are the epitome of womanhood, and ought to be the role models for each and every girl born on this planet. That is assuming, of course, that those two women were, in actual fact, the gentle, refined, humble and submissive goddesses they were portrayed to be in the archaic scriptures. Obviously, this teaching receives an ENORMOUS amount of scorn, contempt and derision from a certain proportion of women (and also many "men"), but that is perfectly fine, because, such foolish feminists are destined to die lonely and alone, with no family surrounding them, and hopefully not transfer their adulterated genes to forthcoming generations. In some locations in the world, STRAY COWS freely wander the urban streets, displaying their teats. Similarly, in most locations, women wander the dangerous streets alone or in groups, displaying their bosoms and other bodily parts. Such loose women are no better than STRAY COWS. The TRUTH is very difficult to accept, right, Slave? “Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the TRUTH.” Siddhārtha Gautama (AKA The Buddha), Aṅguttara Nikāya 3.131 (Paraphrased). Paṭicchanna Sutta “...encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be self-controlled, chaste, good managers of the household, kind, being submissive to their husbands, so that the word of God may not be discredited.” ************* “Yet women will be saved through childbearing, provided they continue in faith and love and holiness, with modesty.” ************* “Women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says.” St. Paul of Tarsus, Titus 2:4-5. 1 Timothy 2:15. 1 Corinthians 14:34.

Comparing gay people to alcoholics, drug users, and cancer is a crazy take lol the reason no one responded is because everyone was probably so baffled by someone making such an unfortunate and frankly disturbing comparison that it’s best to move on then to debate because how can you have a reasonable conversation with someone who’s baseline is that. Let’s say it is mental illness to play into what she’s saying, well no doctor is going to tell you you should deny having any issue willl be helpful in any way - they will tell you you need family support, and if it’s something medication can’t help, ways for your loved ones to assist. Super stupid comparison. She begs the question where’s the line? Well of course I think many would argue in the game of morals does something we do harm someone, some stealing harm someone yes, does being an alcoholic harm people yes, does lying harm someone yes, does adultery harm someone yes, does even being lustful in a straight or gay way harm someone yes. But having consensual safe intimacy harm anyone? I can’t think of a reason why it would? Nor is it anyone’s business even. Nor is it something mentioned by Jesus. Paul is focused on sex, Jesus is focused on greed - let’s try to be more like Him. This is very much an American issue - Spain is very religious and also very welcoming to gay people - regardless of if you think it’s right. Stop acting like you don’t sin everyday, very hypocritical

As a woman, and one who studied feminism for two years as part of my under-graduate degree, I used to support women’s ordination, as part of equality, but as I grew in my faith, I realised this was not as the Bible taught (for whatever reason). As a former Anglican, I saw that as the Biblical teachings on leadership regarding gender were subverted, this led to more and more changes that were not Biblically based. This has basically led to apostasy and gradually to the church dying. I now believe men and women were created equal, but have different roles. And only men ought to be ordained into spiritual leadership roles such as elders and bishops, etc..

Although the vast majority adheres to the Holy Canons, there are some "intellectuals" (as usual) who strongly argue for female ordination. There are a great many Christians who also show a rather unseemly amount of pride in being religious, too.

@@mceajc conservatism does not have to do with simply retain old traditions, which may be stupid and horrific. When it comes to Christianity, God's revelation to man is, of course, infallible. Therefore, any deviation from that (any innovation), would necessarily be false. The fall of Christianity had always been about proud people not sticking to the Church Fathers, neglecting the deposit of faith and doing their own thing. It's only out of utmost respect that the Church pays much attention in preserving what was passed on from generation to generation. Also, the Church was established by Jesus Christ (at least my Church, i.e. the Eastern Orthodox Church). It's not an innovation. Perhaps you are referring to the newly created Protestant churches, which we, as Orthodox, do not see as members of the historical Church. Thanks for honoring my freedom of speech. Of course the words in the bible are sexist ... because in the era when the bible was compiled ... "men" that wrote the words in the bible ... WERE very sexist. If women had compiled the words in the bible ... the story would have been that a Goddess created the universe ... and that the Goddess said that men had to be subservient to women. And the fact that the bible was compiled over 1500 years, by men on different continents ... should alert us to the fact that they were listening to voices in their own heads ... not to words uttered by Jesus ... who (by the way) was said to be a Jewish Rabbi. From the book “Smith’s Bible Dictionary. Bible There are at least thirty six different authors, who wrote in three continents, in many countries, in three languages, and from every possible human standpoint. Among these authors were kings, farmers, mechanics, scientific men, lawyers, generals, fishermen, ministers and priests, a tax-collector, a doctor, some rich, some poor, some city bred, some country born-thus touching all the experiences of men-extending over 1500 years.

I was given to understand that many people come to faith and stay there because of a "feeling" - a burning in the bosom, a sensation of being visited by the holy spirit. How does one identify the differences between these non-tangible things? In my country, the law is based on what is called "natural justice", where the punishment should fit the crime - be in proportion to the harm. To many, it "feels" wrong to cut the hands off a theif, or, for some examples of things worthy of being stoned to death in the bible: Working on the sabbath; having a stubborn, rebellious son; homosexuality; blaspheming; idolatory; adultery. If feelings have no bearing on truth, how does feeling the spirit of the lord relate to the truth of their existence? If scripture is the arbiter of truth, should these examples I gave be used to justify publicly stoning people to death? If men and wonen have different roles, why, throughout history, are there examples of both carrying out acts generally ascribed to the other? Who are we to decide the limits of what others can achieve - and if you beleive in a god, those abilities were god-given. Why should we be policing the existence of others? Are women preachers causing harm? If there is evidence for this, I have not seen it. Are masculine women or effeminate men causing harm? If there is evidence for this, I have not seen it. I suspect that many people do not "like" when women perform "men's work", because of what they have read in the bible and how they "feel", but as you say, feelings have no bearing on truth. The way to truth is through rational thought, evidence and careful examination of our own biases so that we do not fall prey to them. At least - that's how I feel about it! :)

I'm not sure why Jon Stewart left Paul McCartney out of his title "Dylan, Lennon, Marx and God" In January 1967, Paul McCartney announced "There is no God, there is no Soul, and I'm just one of the wizards that's going to sort out society." This appears in the International Times, as run by Peter Asher (his sister is Jane Asher, his father was Richard Asher, who committed suicide in his house, but they couldn't find him for 3 days), Barry Miles, and John Dunbar. This is Communist talk. This is less than 6 months after he has just seen John Lennon's statements about Jesus Christ, create furor in certain sections of America. And these statements weren't even as inflammatory. And I am shocked that you can find files on George Harrison and John Lennon from both the FBI and CIA, but very little, if at all about McCartney. And what McCartney has stated in January 1967, makes him FBI and CIA enemy number one in that Cold War that is supporting sending troops to Vietnam to fight the spread of such ideals, and keeping it out of America. And the rest of the world if possible. McCartney's statement literally seems to have evaporated to irrelevance, whereas Lennon's statement, which wasn't incorrect, nor was meant as insult to Jesus Christ, or Religion, has endured and is a pivotal moment in their history. It was a comment about Fame. If Lennon had said soon after "There is no God, there is no Soul, and I'm just one of the wizards that's going to sort out society", the press would have been on that in a heartbeat, and he most definitely would have been in the eyesight of the FBI and CIA. But McCartney is also the Beatle that can disappear and go completely underground while sequestered in central London for TWO MONTHS between September and November 1966, and go completely undetected. No photographs. No press. No appearances. No gigs. NOTHING. A Beatle capable of doing this in 1966, should not need a Mal Evans to help him survive leaving hotel rooms and cars. Because Ringo Starr cannot go on holiday with Maureen Starkey in Spain without the press knowing it. Nor can he join up with John Lennon who is filming a movie in Spain, which the press know about. Nor can John Lennon come back from Spain without being photographed exiting the plane. And George Harrison can't go to India without the press knowing where he is. Why do they keep wanting to know where they are? Cuz they're Beatles. But also because by August 1966, their contract with Brian Epstein had not been renegotiated. And the press are hounding whomever they can find to ask are The Beatles leaving Epstein, or are they breaking up. Between September and November 1966, this is all the press want to know. Plus Northern Songs Ltd. is a public company on the open stock market. Any shake up in management is going to cause those stocks to fall. Brian Epstein has already dealt with Allen Klein back in 1964, and rejected an offer he made on US distribution. They're hearing from him again in June 1966, when he says he wants to manage them. And they hear about him in a BIG way in November 1966, when it makes the British newspapers that he's acquired two Beatles as clients. And Brian Epstein, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr were all available to the press to tell them that Klein was talking bullshit. They outright said he had none of them as clients. Paul McCartney? He's left London for Africa when the rest of them are all now back in England. No one seems to know he's done this either, and he seems to not be able to get the dates right to make the trip possible. (Go to Mal Evans account, and whether Jane Asher was there or not). McCartney's also the only one who doesn't like Epstein's management. But nevermind that!!! How is a Beatle escaping the country without detection, and completely going under the radar in concern with the press, media, EVERYBODY. This is why the FBI and CIA don't have files on him ;)

James had some very good points. The problem I have with him is his attitude. I do not think it's wise to make faces when the other person is speaking. It speaks of a lack of willingness to listen. That in itself is the sin of pride.

Perhaps the answer to Mr. Grayling about the idea of cosmopolitanism predating Christianity is that cosmopolitanism was an idea first put forward by the Stoics. The Stoics were the founders of natural law theory and they also believed in filial and religious piety. As such, Paul would have agreed with their insights sighting how natural law is in accordance with Biblical law as per the letter to the Romans. Nonetheless the Stoics were no more successful than Christians in eradicating the evil of slavery from society and neither Stoics nor Christians attempted to attack the institution itself. The Stoics would have seen it as an evil fate beyond their control and Christians similarly would have seen it as institution in a fallen world beyond their control to change. Jesus was no political revolutionary and both Paul and the Stoics would have agreed on emphasizing the internal freedom even in the face of outer conditions of subjugation, as per 1 Corinthians 7:22. The idea of eradicating the institution itself didn’t seem possible until society itself was morally united enough and strong enough to challenge it with its political institutions. That didn’t really happen till after the Barbary and African slave trades caused a moral crisis forcing societies to make that decision.

Ben needs to demonstrate the truth of his first premise. It's a presupposition and fallacious.

Morals fall off when it turns to politics. To maintain the majority of the vote you need to cater to the majority of the people, and those people will have different morals. That leaves politicians with the only choice being to discard morals when it comes to getting votes. What the world needs are politicians who speak the truth about what they’ll do and how they feel, so people can better get a grasp on who they’re actually voting into office.
