    Most people were fine with the 1998 Mulan, Katara, Toph, Samus Aran, Violet Evergarden, Mizu, the entirety of Kill la Kill, Casca, etc. The ones that get pushback are _often_ obviously made for bad faith idelogical rhetoric/proselytization and/or pandering. There is a world of difference between a female character that is strong and a 'strong female character.'

    Sorry, but as a guy, displaying a full range of emotion is bad. People want to be seen how they want to be seen. Cheerful even when angry. Happy when sad. Hiding your emotions is realistic because like weirdos and creeps, people are afraid of rejection. The full range is only good for those who are fearless, reckless or careless. Otherwise, it's unrealistic.

    The first two shows I always think of are Avatar: TLA & SW: The Clone Wars. Katara, Toph & Ashoka are amazing female characters, and if Toph or Ashoka became the main lead for their own show. I’d watch it without hesitation. Because they’re just great characters I’d love to see more of, not just because of their badassary, tho that’s one part of it.

    let me list some good female characters in anime im bored Sailor Moon: Very strong and has ton of friends, but her flaw is that she cries a lot and at the beginning she relied a lot on Tuxedo Mask Mikasa Ackerman: Very strong, smart, and interesting, her flaw is her love for Eren. Asuka Langley Soryu: She portrays Borderline personality disorder very well, she's very ambitious. Her flaw is that she's egotistical and she knows that she needs help or comfort but she refuses to get any and she uses her ego as a self defense mechanism Jolyne Kujo: She is a good stand user, she's very creative with how she uses it. But her flaw is that she can be too impulsive sometimes. Sakura Haruno: (i sniff yall haters in the comments), Sakura had a great development arc she went from a lovesick girl to strongest kunoichi in the series, it's saddening how the studio made her look bad Emma: Emma is pretty smart for being an eleven year old, she cares deeply about her siblings and she wants them all to live instead of being eaten. Yor Forger: Yor is strong, caring, and her personalty is cute. Yeah her and Hinata may be similar and despite her crush on Loid, Yor actually KNOWS when duty comes before him and she doesn't make Loid her everything. Her flaw is her nervousness and being unable to cook Kagome Higurashi: Kagome is strong willed and despite her love for Inuyasha she contribute her fair share Chihiro (Spirited Away): She goes from a spoiled brat to becoming fearless and she gets to saving her parents from the curse set on them.

    I think a great strong female character is Debbie from invincible, despite at first seeming like a casual stay at home mom, she takes charge, she takes things into her own hands and in the second season especially she overcomes her depression and even takes care of someone who she shouldn’t have had to. (It’s a great show, what to the end of the first episode and then I bet you’ll probably want to keep watching, either way I think she is a great example)

    I read manga and manhwa. I have read so many manhwa with overpowered, emotionless edgey male leads. Anime and manga has the same things. That seems totally okay to the same audience I have seen het angry about manhwa for women that does a similar or the same things. Honesty my writing of female characters is literally just writing characters that happen to be women. I know people regurgitate that line a lot but those same people critic characters for being like men pr not being feminine which kind of goes against what they keep repeating.

    Honestly one of the best written female characters in my Opinion is black Clover Noelle Silva had flaws , she couldn't control her Magic and had an extreme inferiority complex But later on she became more confident and powerful in her Abilities even matching or surpassing most of the main Cast and she's Practically one of the strongest characters in the show Black Clover has plenty of well written female characters, in fact they a lot

    The problem is most SFCs are either written by men or lesbians. Shonen is written unapologetically for Japanese boys. It is not required to appeal to women any more than Sailor Moon is required to appeal to a male audience. Part of the great appeal of manga is it is not burdened by American sex & gender hang-ups.

    I think the biggest issue I have with these kinds of characters is not so much their existence in general, but when they are directly contrasted to better written characters then held up on a pedestal above those same characters. Because, sometimes, a fun romp with low emotional stakes is pretty fun. It's not fantastic storytelling, sure, but sometimes you just wanna see the flawless perfect main character punch an irredeemable arsehole. But you always end up seeing the flaws in these stories as soon as they're contrasted ro better written stories. Which is what's happening with all the prominent ones. Rey was living up to Luke and anakin and fell short due to a failure to establish meaningful connections and a determination on the writers part to have her fill in as luke's successor. She wasn't necessarily a bad character, she was just not as well written as many characters in the films preceeding hers, or even in the same films as her. For captain marvel, she was failed by the writers being scared to give her actual flaws. They were scared to make her seem weak against all the big strong men in the franchise and as a result failed to give her character any substance. She had potential, but she was failed by her movie. And the same with she-hulk. Who had it even worse because she was being directly compared to hulk. (Although the end of her series didn't exactly help much. She's not deadpool, and also they hadn't established it as a thing her character did before hand, so her literally breaking the 4th wall just felt wrong.) And for all his flaws, hulk/bruce banner had been allowed to develop and grow as a character, allowed to show weaknesses and such. She was never really given that opportunity to grow. Once again, she had potential. She had the opportunity to grow from the woman who told the hulk that she had more experience with controlling anger than him, she had the ppportunity to recognise that just because peoples struggles werent identical, they could still have shared experiences and its alright to take advice and help. But the writers were scared to give her that because they wanted to write a strong female character who doesn't need a man. And that's just the three most prominent characters in this discussion. So yeah. I don't think the issue is the characters themselves, but the fact that they're being directly contrasted by other better written characters.

    A way that I like to write characters, particularly strong characters that aren’t men or fall outside of gender binaries is to think about if I would change something about them if they were a different gender. This can show the actual problems and flaws with the characters design and can help when writing down traits. If something besides the character’s pronouns or biology would be changed, the design can be improved.

    I think a good example of good strong female writing is strong woman from South park, she tries to be perfect but deep down she knows she has flaws and she does actually have a relationship with other characters

  • @IN-tm8mw
    @IN-tm8mw5 күн бұрын

    Strength means different things but out of the many it can represent, I value "resilience" the most. Physical and mental willpower to achieve a goal. But the source of this resilience can often come from relationships like friends, family and loved ones. This ties into why "Power of friendship" trope is so popular when done right. Heritage is my favorite source of a characters strength, you don't want it to be the only reason but as a starting point, its engaging and interesting with characters. Too many writers start the main characters off as complete loners with no family but the reason the MCU got big around Iron Man and Thor they had character arcs focused around their relationships with their parents. She Hulk turned most off because of this also, her relationship with her family wasn't handled well. In this digital age, where many are joining online cultures, readers want to be reminded of community, family and the bonds from that. Sitcoms use to fill this void and i see readers looking for similar things from anime.

    With regard to a tip you've proposed; incorporating memorable features into our character designs. What process would be the most useful? To be more exact, what would be a method that would help us decide on features that click with the character?

  • @FifiMangaka
    @FifiMangaka17 күн бұрын

    Typically, I use some aspect of the characters backstory as a waystone. For example, one of my characters wears a long heavily beaded braid in his otherwise plain hair. Story wise, the braid designates the tribe he’s from in his homeland. Usually I find that pointing back to the characters’ story helps me pick the most interesting and authentic features. Hope that helps!! :)

  • @CaptiousClown

    @@FifiMangaka It does, but that leads into another question: What if the features in question don't relate to their backstory? What then?

  • @FifiMangaka

    @@CaptiousClown It doesn't necessarily have to. My strategy in this situation then becomes; I like this, it looks cool but is this a practical design that I won't mind drawing several dozen times per chapter? (assuming you're making a comic) 😅

    @@FifiMangaka I see what you're getting at. It's not a bad idea to implement a memorable feature that looks cool, but the practicalities should be considered. I would like to create a comic sometime in the future, but I'm just absorbing information for character design 😄
