Judo has a chapter of striking : atemi waza but you don't use it in randori. Do bjj use strikes when they spar?

The major reason for the 14oz - 16oz gloves is not hand protection, it's to make it look less bloody and gory and so seem more civil for the spectators, the claim is it's "safer" but it's absolutely not. Comparing bareknuckle fights vs modern boxing, the fighters look quite different post fight, but the modern boxers will accumulate unseen brain damage. My rule is I'm not letting anyone punch me in the head with gloves, at most 4 - 6 oz MMA gloves but even then I'm not a fan, otherwise it's either bareknuckle or handwraps. Getting CTE just ain't worth it, I'd prefer look uglier with wounds that heal, rather than get brain damage which doesn't.

You mention “changing people’s perception of self defense.” Ι totally agree that that is needed. For that cause, if you like you can read my bοοk just out of the A/zon's oven. I can say that it will be an awakening experience for many if not all. It’s titled " Myths and blind spots in the fighting arts’ world.- After the Bible, it’s the next gοοd bοοk for you! " It's a great gift for all practitioners, especially instructors; it will be a paradigm shift for which some will hate me, while others will thank me for it... And there will be a part 2 coming. Thank you for your time.

My experience with Japanese jujitsu and judo back in the day was with lots sparring. In fact we were forced to only use judo or jujitsu while the opponent used boxing gloves. And it was a very traditional school....Houston Budokan. So are we measuring the art itself or are we measuring how watered down a lot of schools are now?

The saying that 90% of fights end up on the ground is a MYTH. As a former bouncer I have been in a lot of real fights, some with multiple attackers and myself or my colleagues very rarely ended up on the ground. Complete strangers who have no stake in the game will kick you in the head just because. Real fights are not bound by honor, one on one with a referee, friends and strangers will get involved. Also, Its really hard to see the knife coming when grappling on the ground. Its hard to see coming in any grapple but on the ground especially. Stay on your feet! I like that you made the distinction between sport BJJ and old school self-defense BJJ but why not make the same distinction for Judo? Classical Judo can still be found. Its a little harder to find than old school BJJ but its also been an Olympic sport for over 60 years. Sport changes all martial arts.

I train in kung fu and my Sifu mentioned that he used to spar hard every week when he was 20. At 65 he had blown out both knees, suffered concusions, and broken several bones. He said every week someone went to the doctor. The biggest thing he told us was "DON'T do what I did. We were young and stupid. If you just spar and don't focus on technique, you're only learning how to take a hit." When he trained us we did slow, light sparring focusing on technique every week and only sparred all-out twice a year, with boxing gloves (I had to wear elbow pads because I use elbows a lot). You realise how far you've come in 6 months when that happens. I tell my students "we all have to go to work tomorrow."

I like how good Muay Thai gyms train. Drill, and condition hard. Spar light and playful. During "real fights" either in the ring or on the streets in defense. Go hard as you can to win or get away. Boxing was... Not good. At the go they make sure 1000% you need to avoid punches. Other wise you quit or get knocked out or have brain damage.

Theres getting over the fear of punched, which you have not, you have to know it to do what Mikhail is doing. If a punch did come his way he would deal with it. As his instincts have done in other videos. Watch more than one after hearing about it.

The hands down part haha, they know how to deal with any punch given with redirection, or just plain absorption with breathing, the lungs deflating with the exhale of the breath and the looseness transferring the energy safely which can be redirected towards the attacker

The first is called triangulation and has to do with unbalancing and keeping the other foot from touching the ground, which Mr. Ryabko did perfectly, doesnt make sense if you dont try to dig in all the way, watching this is like watching a poker player talk about basketball and judging it

I have trained in both Judo and BJJ for some years. I am getting older and I am small and light. In a real fight I will first use Judo to take down my opponent and deal with him from top. However being smaller than average I may end up in the bottom....in that case I will use old school BJJ to stay safe, sweep or even finish my opponent from the bottom. Having both tools give me confidence.
