I really enjoyed the point about how important sparring and competition are. Getting hit really changes your perception of the world around you. Learning to stay calm and aware of your surroundings can only come from practice, sparring, and fighting.

I’d say bjj if that’s not an option I’d do a traditional martial art like tae kwon do or karate my reason for saying this is I don’t want my kid taking to much damage to the head but I also want what there learning to have value that’s why my first choice would be bjj if I couldn’t do that I’d do tma just because you learn the basics of punching kicking and defense plus it’s good discipline for a child ultimately tho every kid is different so I would probably let them try a few different classes and pick which one they like best

Thank you for answering my question. I'm surprised you realized I'm from Japan though lol Perhaps I wrote that somewhere. As for your answer, I feel dumb. But of course. Leading by example and being actively involved. How did I forget such simple and basic things... Shows how I don't make a living as a teacher. Still the concept of self defense is interesting to me lately. Fascinating, almost. Never was I taught any self defense, nor did I try to learn any. My background is Kyokushin. Before it split up into millions of Kyokushins. I think that explains everything to those who know lol Kyokushin was never about self defense. It's about taking down your opponent in a fight. Vector of effort is pretty much opposite. I also picked up a few submissions, a few throws, a bit about how to stab with a knife. A few techniques aimed at dealing serious harm. So, yeah. Now that I'm almost 40 I started wondering about this whole self defense concept. Very foreign, very interesting.

I think all martial arts are good if taught correctly for kids The most important thing for kids to learn is make the training fun and drills / games with a competitive nature but also explaining that if your not 1st is ok as long as you try your best - To back it up i normally tell a story of a special forces guy who was not the fastest but he had the mindset and commitment that got him into a elite UK force Another point on kids - i would say adapt the style to the child some will prefer a stand up striking art and others will like a ground fighting or a wrestling style This is my opinion On your Kali point i also think this art is awesome and very destructive

Depending on how young, it's never too young really for them to learn just basic self defense stuff they can use right then and practicing to get better at it is the key to teach them first really, But as far as martial arts training overall they should focus more on different aspects of martial arts more so than others until they're , If they're really young Other than just basic self defense techniques they could find useful at that time it's probably better for them to focus on developing the routine of training this or that like flexibility balance and strength. Doing the forms and exercises like chi sao ECT to develop and train useful reflex reactions and avoiding the bad reactions to situations. And I'm not saying younger kids shouldn't spar and wrestle and practice or even get atleast lightly hit but you wanna avoid actual injuries, a little light pain won't kill anyone. But then once they are atleast near a teen ager of course still carefully but they can pretty much just go all out from there or as early as you want but if safety is the idea then that would still adaptively be the best way to train a young person to be a really good martial artist later on. Self defense itself they can learn anytime but really wouldn't be truly practicing it too often till they were slightly older

Hey Michael, I discovered this channel about a week ago when your video ranking martial arts styles was recommended to me. After I watched your video on the best books for self defense, I was hooked. Suffice it to say, I almost immediately fell in love with your content and approach to self-defense. All of that to say, I hope you continue the fantastic work, and hope I can get down to Indy one day to sit in on a class or two!

Sad that you didn't mention sambo more. It is in my opinion the best grappling system after maybe freestyle judo. It incorporates judo throws, wrestling takedowns, and all the joint manipulation submissions. The only two downsides there are is that there aren't any chokes at least in the sportive variation and the moral code isnt as much developed as in judo. Also that you didn't mention wrestling as a base martial art is a little disappointing. You didn't really have any contact with that art I know but the control of someone and total grid like you get in wrestling is nearly unmatched in any other art. Tough I would still put my kids in judo first and only second in wrestling because of the moral aspect and more technique focused fighting with more self defence aplicability

My comment got deleted, not sure if it was you or youtube. Here we go again. It is Heartless Knave you said it right. Thank you for answering my question. I am looking into and will most likely be taking Judo. Then also looking into BJJ or wrestling, and Boxing or muai thai. Hard2hit also has a video that recommends training the way you are taught in classes and then doing self defense style stances techniques in Randori / Free-sparring if the person you're training with is fine with it. But to just be aware that you will probably get defeated a lot by not fighting in exactly the same way. I have a friend who is kind of interested in doing some self defense so I just need to schedule a time with you for private lessons that works on Wednesday night as there might be a timezone difference due to living on the west coast of Canada. Follow up question. What do you think of learntofightnow and the stuff trav is teaching? Specifically the knife defense mastery course he's selling? I am unsure but you did recommend you can do online courses. Like gracie's or being taught by an instructor such as yourself through zoom.
