@@James-wy6py The concert finds ZZ Top just a little before their whole sound would change with Eliminator. Sure, there are some hints of that kind of exploration, but overall this is a killer show that has plenty of trademark ZZ Top boogie. The performances are great and this is a lot of fun to listen to before the massive fame of the Eliminator era that was about to hit them. The 1980 show really is the highlight of the set, warts and all. That particular video is a performance at Rockpalast on their Deguello tour and it is a real smoker. I’d have to say that the 1980 performance here is hotter, When I talk about the “warts” of the 1980 show, they are all really about the recording itself. The band is purely on fire and it is just an incredible set of music. The recording suffers at first from 1980 video production. There’s also an annoying thing where the name of the song appears at the bottom of the screen. Also, it seems like the master tape of this hasn’t had the care it should have and seems to show some signs of wear. None of that matters other than passing mention, though, because this concert is just that good!
My first concert was ZZ-Top. I was 16 years old, and just got my driver's license. The guy sitting next to pulled off his cowboy hat, and the band inside was lined with joints all the way around....
No band is tighter than ZZ Top. They should be too since they've been been playing together since 4 AD.

And bass, for that matter. I've never heard his name mentioned in any discussion about the top rock bassists, nor have I ever seen him on any such list. But each member of a three piece has to be top shelf in order to pull off a live performance like this.

Christopher Winkler I think Billy once said that Dusty plays lead bass. So true.
@Mark-sj3xb

Dusty covered a lot of the chordage (is that a word?) while Billy played lead riffs. Played a lot in fifths which created the 3rd of the chord in overtones. I guess that’s where the “lead bass” description comes from
RIP Dusty Hill- great singer, bass player and talented enough to have his own band
Goddamn Dusty had some pipes ! Not to mention steadfast bass playing that was a perfect match for Gibbons's playing style.Beautiful...
Billy & Dusty were such an awesome tag team. it's a true shame they didn't do vocal interplays more often

Today we lost the great Dusty Hill. O my heart... 🎶💔
stereo cannot go loud enough for this song!
As great as Billy is,Dusty takes it to another level with his vocals while holding down that bottom end the whole time! What a tremendous talent!Frank is so laid back compared to the other two, never misses a beat. This band here is the best of the best,we miss you Dusty!
i gained even more respect for Billy watching this. I knew he was great but this is amazing! One of the greatest performers
I absolutely love this band. Great players, great songs, and they just exude American attitude. I think this song could be a second US national anthem. Samuel Adams was a brewer...and America's been raisin' hell for freedom ever since. Happy 4th of July!
The rev killin it! Sooooo sweet
I’m from Texas and almost 40 years old and I’m just now really getting into this band. I feel like I’ve wasted 40 years. Also Dusty looks like he’s about to bust a myth.
holy cow....it don't get more nitty-gritty, down and dirty than this.....just a MANIACAL performance! The energy and dynamics of this arrangement, with the tempo and the changes....EASILY earns a spot as one of the heaviest jams to be "counted on one hand". The lads left nuthin on the table here. As pure and to the bone as you could ever thirst for.....
Dusty's vocals are incredible here, such soul.
Thank you Dusty for writing that song about me

I've been a huge ZZ top fan all my life, I played a Fandango album so many times you could read the paper THRU it. And I never really realised what a great singer Dusty was.
Good to see/hear some of their "lesser" songs that still kick ass!

Ironically, yes. However, Frank did sport a Beard (no pun intended) in the early yrs of ZZ Top (he's been "clean-shaven" since the L8 1970s (aside from the mustache).
Nothings meaner than the snarling sound of a Les Paul when it's cranked up.
Rest in power Dusty..

I have a DVD of ZZ Top's "Rockpalast"1980 performance--IMHO it's one of the all-time great live performances ever captured on film. They were absolutely at the top of their game in this show--just incredible!! (Do yourself a favor and hunt down a copy!!) The Rev, Dusty, and Frank blew the roof off!! WOW!!
I was a teen when I started listening, and still do, love it.
This and Waiting for the Bus are my favorites
ZZ Top, another reason Texas Rocks!

That is to be debated.. what Hendrix meant was, there was no one playing Southern Texas style Rock. It was different from all other, that's why they didn't get no air play.
One the fucking greatest song titles and rock tunes ever. How many times have I been in bars and have seen beer drinkers and hell raisers...…..it's like the ultimate biker song.
Aaahh 1980 Was a Great Year ....

Time keeps on ticking... This was their opener when I saw them in '73. Going through a box of old ticket stubs not long ago.I was blessed. My first rock concert: May 19, 1973 (50 years smh lol yeah, I'm old, but still above the dirt...) East Tennessee State University Rory Gallagher ZZ Top $4 It was about two months before Tres Hombres came out. (Dusty Hill's 24th birthday, I came to find out on his passing) It was Festival Seating and I managed to get about 15 feet from mic center. Rory Gallagher was pure fire right out of the gate, and his band was phenomenal. (particularly Lou Martin on his electric piano) Rory was amazing to see play and I think that he had as much fun as anyone. Then, Billy Gibbons and the boys came out. Back when they were the most badass blues rock band that ever was. Straw hats, jeans, no beards (but Frank. lol), and BG in a white tshirt w/ pack of Marlboros rolled up in the sleeve(lol). Needless to say, Rory and Billy made a big impression on a 16 yr old. Blues rock, slide guitar nut ever since. RIP Rory, Rod, Lou, & Dusty. Thank You! Keep Rockin' Billy, Frank, & Gerry
Billy and Frank were amazing here, but Dusty stole the show! Straight up legendary on bass and vocals...now that's a fkin performance!
Amazing 3 dudes can put out really rocking music, like this. So thankful my GF back in 1979 liked them: saw them I Austin, TX. F'n rock like no other band.
RIP DUSTY WE WILL MISS YOU
That Guitar tone is just absolutely legendary!
Man they were on fire nack them no lasers just straight rock man good time this is Jessie Cristy husband God bless us all 💕🙏
this is man's music

As of 2014, 34 years have gone by since they did this concert. Everybody gets older.... I don't know how old you are, but you'll slow down a bit too. It happens to all of us. Billy, Dusty and Frank were all born in 1949, so do the math. I've seen them a number of times over the years since the 1970's and they still "Got it".. Thank god they are still around. Original band members too.

There was awhile there where eveytime they came out with an album and toured on it my friends and I went to the concerts they had they were all different. One had Rick Derringer as a backing performer. Was such a great show. I think that was the first year they had the massive light show that everyone including Pink Floyd wanted to add to there show. All in all I think I saw them about a dozen times and would go if I could again.
Untouched
I keep buying Les Pauls, then ending up selling them after a few months because of the crippling weight ... then I watch this video, hear that MONSTER tone at the intro ... rinse/repeat.
