Several comments on this post demonstrate the unfortunate negative "effect" RECENT technology has on listener & viewer impressions of live music. Billy's been a generous influence on my work since the late 70's, especially in regards to tone, production, keeping it simple and in the groove. Yes, at some live shows he'll occasionally use limited backing guitar and special effect tracks - however, never any "auto-tune," lip syncing or relying on vocal dubs - especially at this show. Any delay seen in close ups of his singing is only from the video mix - this is a pure live 3 piece golden chunk of Rock history. Billy always has - and continues to REALLY SING IT. Don't confuse these guys with techno reliant performers of today - they won't need any crutches until their hips are being replaced from all the dance grooves.

I notice he has a dual tonality to his voice, how is that being done? You can clearly tell when dusty sings however he when he’s not there are two voices coming out of Billy?
@JeffHayfordMusic
3 жыл бұрын
@@gtate135 I'm quite sure your hearing his brilliant mix with the analog effects available at the time. It's a combination of Chorus, Phase, Delay, Reverb and Compression, he's dialed them into a blend that does sound a bit like todays "Doubling" effect. By the 90's people in the know, knew Billy was a tone genius. When the earliest commercially released digital effects processor by Sony, "SP90" I believe it was called, they turned to Billy for help. During its development they sent them to him, he worked wonders with it and to make it understandable asked him (hired I'm sure) to write the entire last chapter of the owner's manual - soon everyone wanted one. I sold 2 guitars to get the $1,600 needed to buy one. It was extremely powerful especially for the time, however also extremely difficult to use and especially create your own effects, the 'lil 'ol boy from Texas further proved his brilliance with instruction on how to get the most out of one. It quickly became an industry standard, and was so for several years when digital wonders were coming out like wildfire and in every studio worth its salt.

Might get some flack for this (I love ZZ top), but I actually like how the sound is rough, you can hear bum notes, but it sounds natural and I like it. It is what it is, a live show and there's no over dubs or secret musicians hidden in the wings, just Billy, Dusty and Frank giving it big guns and going for it.

I am from North Harris Co.Texas.Which,Houston is the county seat. Billy was born there,Dusty is originally from Dallas,Frank was born in Frankston,Texas on the Anderson/Henderson county line. My moms people setting in Henderson County in1846. Now the first time I saw these dudes was Dec.27th,1981 @ the Wintergarden in Dallas. And no l didn't go from Houston to Dallas to see The Fabulous ZZTop. I lived in Steve Miller's hometown. Without googling,can anyone honestly tell me what town he is from? El Loco was a killer show,no opening act either.
@ChrisStokes07

Cary West Without googling I'm gonna say Steve Miller is from Dallas. My first ZZTop show was El Loco tour Nov. 1st, 1981 at the Cotton Bowl with the Rolling Stones. Man it was a perfect day for a show at the Cotton Bowl, Texas in the Fall when it starts to cool off a little bit, you know what I'm talkin bout. Paid $17.50 for the ticket. I still got the stub. I'm a Fort Worth boy, but I was born up north in Amarillo.

I notice he has a dual tonality to his voice, how is that being done? You can clearly tell when dusty sings however he when he’s not there are two voices coming out of Billy?

All I can say is there has never been a band more talented, cool and down right bad ass as ZZ Top folks!
Always rated Billy Gibbons as a player. Eliminator has to be my favourite album, has so many memories of growing up learning those riffs.
That Lil''Ol Band From Texas Billy the Kid on🎸 guitar 🎸 R.I.P. Dusty🇨🇱Hill
Last time I saw their eye balls!
Finally, a video where you can hear Frank singing!
Backing vocals, both, are amazing!
I really miss seeing Pearly Gates out and about. I completely understand why, but she’s really the 4th member of this incredible band.

They're good lads. :-) I love the effect on the vocal. I really loved it when they began to embrace synthesisers and machines in the early 80's.

I saw this concert live on TV back in the days.I recorded It on my VCR.The harmonizer effect was on then.The vocals on Ten Foot Pole is singback.
it's all in my head I'm crazy
This is the way it’s done. amigo

Seen them 2 years before this video, Rick Derringer was the warm up band. This is an awesome video and sound quality for 82.

+frank furter Someone lied to me. I guess I misunderstood the d.j. on the radio. A classic rock station. I'm still trying to figure what they consider Classic Rock. I'm a Southern boy (59 yrs old) but if I hear Sweet Home Alabama one more time I'm going to break their antenna. Maybe he said this year but anyway, 14 times frank, wow. The only guy who have seen the more are the roadies. Surely you've had to do some traveling to see them that many times.
