Available Now: mercury-studios.lnk.to/ZZTopD...
Double Down Live is a 2 DVD set from ZZ Top combining shows from 1980 and 2008. Disc one was filmed at the Grugahalle in Essen, Germany for the Rockpalast TV series. Hot on the heels of their classic Deguello album (it features 9 of the 10 songs from it) the show finds ZZ Top before sequencers and synthesizers epitomising their lil ol blues band from Texas nickname. Complimented by tracks drawn predominantly from their Tres Hombres and Fandango! albums this is a true best of ZZ Top in the seventies. Disc Two was shot during their European tour in 2008 and combines great live performances, interview clips and back stage footage to create the ultimate ZZ Top on the road movie. With nearly 30 years between the performances the two disc set gives a fascinating then and now insight into what has maintained the ZZ Top live phenomenon.
I just got paid today,
Got me a pocket full of change.
Said, I just got paid today,
Got me a pocket full of change.
If you believe like workin' hard all day,
Just step in my shoes and take my pay.
I was born my papa's son,
When I hit the ground I was on the run.
I had one glad hand and the other behind.
You can have yours, just give me mine.
When the hound dog barkin' in the black of the night,
Stick my hand in my pocket, everything's all right.
I just got paid today,
Got me a pocket full of change.
Said, black sheep, black, do you got some wool?
Yes, I do, man, my bag is full.
It's the root of evil and you know the rest
But it's way ahead of what's second best.

I've loved ZZ Top since the beginning. Saw Moving Sidewalks '69 in my hometown at Kukral Center CYO dance. Don't get me wrong but the last 4 times I saw them, I was really disappointed. It seems that Billy has in his mind that he can get up there and play a version of a song we all have been used to hearing and he plays it in a way that doesn't even come close to sounding the way that rocked us, doesn't even sound like the same song, took that special "feeling" right out of it. And one time I saw them they had just come out with a new album, and didn't play one song from it. Didn't play even one of their biggest songs beside La Grange. Took away the bluesy rock and roll fire I once had in my heart for them.

Back in 1977, at a Holiday Inn in Fargo, ND, I was drumming for a touring Top 40 dance/lounge band. In the middle of our third set, all three members of ZZ Top walked into the bar. They had been gigging at the local arena-type venue. Our band did acceptable versions of La Grange and Tush, but the leader decided, for whatever reason, not to call them. Instead of getting my plea to open with La Grange, I got to sit with all three of the boys between those two sets. A real dream come true since I had at least two of their albums on the road with me and I loved their music. Sensational band. Superb group of gentlemen. RIP Dusty.

Lex Jenkins.....The Reverend Willy G certainly was a hoot back then. Full of (Coke) energy, I would guess. I sneaked out of the house on a school-night back in '83 to go see them in an old church. What a gig! He was same, bouncing around as funky and as cool as a motherf********. TV Dinners was the single. I had to see them on the strength of that. haha Days later I learned my stoner Uncle had all their albums. Saw them again in 85. That energy was GONE. The videos never do justice to what it was like to be there in person. I saw them in 2011, Solomons Island MD, fuzzy guitars and all, and the sound hit your body so hard not only were you not touching the ground but you could feel your ribcage compressing and expanding with the sound waves. Wasn't even that loud, it was heavy and visceral, almost like the shockwave of an explosion from a distance but it was constant.

Yep. They haven't impressed me in a long time live. (Still great live. I just mean compared to say, pre-'85.) There's two bands that people say "blew away" whoever they were with. AC/DC and ZZ. It's all about the propulsive rhythm. Of course, thrash metal understood this later on.
