    Thanks for the tutorial! By the way, I have found that you can also power the recorder via USB. So if you're recording something that takes a bit longer, you could just plug it into any USB power source and not have to worry about the battery.

    You really should record at 24bit all the time. This makes it easier to achieve a good signal to noise ratio and means you don't have to worry so much about headroom.

    Of all the videos out there, you're the only one who explains where the decibel meter is (may be kind of obvious, but I missed it when another video recommended setting to -6 decibels) and setting the input level in relation to the decibel meter.

    A great basic tutorial! Thanks for help with the levels. I noticed when I changed the setting to 48/16 it increased my recording time. Always a good thing. I there any way to keep the screen lit? And how about setting the time and date? I saw a screen for that briefly but can't find it now. . I guess I'll just look at the online manual. Thanks for a good vid!

    When your doing field recordings outside, its hard to set the input level for unpredictable sounds that may occur in the environment. The ambient sound may sit well between 12 and 6 db, but then there is a loud sound from a car or any number of things and it can distort. Does using auto level overcome this? Or any other tips ?

  • @robhansen5830

    @robhansen5830

    Жыл бұрын

    It's been 6 years so I assume you've figured this out but I'll leave this here for anyone else wondering the same thing. You would think that the auto-leveling function would be perfect and designed for this exact type of situation where you have fluctuating levels of sound being recorded and you want all of them to be captured in that good quality range. However the auto level function can be dangerous to use for this very reason... as the recorder cannot anticipate the loud car noise, when it happens the recorder will lower the input level to compensate for that loud noise but then when your subject starts talking the level will be too low for their voice resulting in bad audio, as it takes a second for the recorder to re-adjust. On the flip side if you have a speaker who pauses for a few seconds and the only sound the recorder is picking up is ambient room tone, the recorder will boost the levels to compensate for the lack of sound and then when they start speaking again the levels will be too high. All of this can result in a fluctuating audio level that is a nightmare to deal with in post. As a general rule I never use it if I can help it and would rather set the level to something that I think would be appropriate for the situation and hope for the best than rely on the auto level. The important thing to set the level for is the subject so if a loud noise happens in the background which doesn't interrupt of overlap the subject then you can simply cut that part out or crush the audio level for that portion in post, but the subject speaking for example will always be consistently at the correct level. If it does overlap someone speaking for instance then the best thing to do would be to ask them to do another take or simply state that one part over again.

    Hello. Question; can the line in be used to bring audio from a PA using the stereo output? What I am trying to do is, record both, the music playing on the speaker, while also singing. Thanks in advanced for your help.

  • @YurmanVisuals

    @YurmanVisuals

    Жыл бұрын

    In theory it would work if the levels coming from the PA match the line in for the Zoom. But that input is, I believe really a Mic input, not a true line-in. So you'll need to test the PA system to see if they match. If the audio is horribly distorted, it means the PA is putting out too strong a signal for the Zoom. You can buy attenuators that would help with that. Or look for a recorder that offers both line-in and mic in settings. Good luck!

    +Dana Isseh If you're going to record video on any camera, you want the to record your audio at the same sample rate. Almost all cameras record audio at 48khz - whether a traditional video camera or still camera with video ability. So you'd want to record your audio on the Zoom at the same setting. Hope that makes sense.

    Hi I want to record a audiobook with 5 people. We (5 persons) are all sitting in front of the one notebook and we are reading the text from the notebook display. Where and in which distance from the notebook and the speakers do you think is the optimal position for the H1 Zoom recorder? The problem is that the housing of the mic is not so stable and we can not give the microphone to the respective person who is talking. This would be the best.. So my idea was to do it behind to the notebook display in the center in a upright position. Would you recommend this or do you recommend a better position? Thank you in advance

    Hi John Lauinger. The key to good audio is getting the mic close. The sweet spot for voices is generally 4-6 inches. Are you describing a situation where the Zoom would be fixed in place and people would 'step up the mic'?. That could work. You'd want a set up that let them be close to the mic, but you don't want the mic directly in front of their mouths unless you're using special gear. The hard sounds of the letter 'P' and some other letters create very loud explosions of air that sound like hard pops if you speak directly into the mic. So you generally want the mic either underneath or overhead - so it's close to the voice, but not directly in the path. If you look at photos of singers recording songs, you'll see they place a diffuser screen between their mouths and the mic to deal with plosives - those hard pops. hope that helps. good luck with the project.

    How do you connect this zoom h1 recorder to a Canon vixia r800 camera so that the audio is recorded together with the visual

  • @Wyurman

    @Wyurman

    6 жыл бұрын

    The Zoom is a recorder, it's not designed to be used as an external microphone. You could, in theory run a cord from the Line Out/headphone jack of the recorder into the mic jack of a camera, I assume the Vixia has one? But the levels would be off, you'd need an adaptor. I think it is easier to record the audio separately. Use the Zoom to record the audio and then let the camera record the best audio it can. In post production you would synch the two together and then delete the audio from the camera. It's pretty simple to do in Adobe Premiere or by using a third party program like Plural Eyes.

  • @YurmanVisuals

    Hi Liam, never been compared to Edward Norton before,thanks...I think :). One of the specs of a microphone is its ability to deal with loud sounds. There is a point at which, if the sound is too loud, it will basically overpower the mic and you'll get distortion. The "Sound Pressure Level" measures the loudest sound a mic can handle. The H1 has a max of 120dB (By comparison, the Zoom H6 has a SPL of 136 which is significantly higher). If you're getting distortion with the H1, and you don't have access to a recorder with a higher SPLI would suggest singing softer if you can, or if you have to, move the mic further away from the source. Recording live music is an art and a skill. LOTS of info on the Internet. I found this link that had some useful info: www.sweetwater.com/insync/live-sound-microphone-buying-guide/

    +isaacmijangos It could be for a couple of reasons. Have you tried other headphones with the Zoom? Do they work properly? Are the ones you are using iPhone earbuds? Are you saying the files off the Zoom are only in one channel on your computer too? Are you using an external microphone? if the microphone is a mono mic it would only record to one channel, so you'd only hear it in one ear.

    If you're using an external microphone, it may only be recording to one channel - that's a function of the mic. Make sure the mic is completely plugged in, that can also cause this problem. If you're using the built in microphones, you should be getting stereo audio on both tracks - it might be a problem with the recorder.

    Hi Juliet, I just looked at the specs on their website. They say only cards up to 32GB are supported. So that could be the problem. www.zoom-na.com/products/field-video-recording/field-recording/zoom-h1-handy-recorder#specs

    Are you using an external microphone or the built in mics? Some external microphones only record to one channel - so that would be normal. If the built in mics are only recording to one channel, something may be wrong with the recorder.

    If you're sure only one mic is picking up sound, then I think there is something wrong with the recorder. You might try turning off the recorder, popping the battery, and seeing if that resets anything. I don't believe there is any setting to turn off one channel. It's also possible it's your headphones or the headphone jack. You might try downloading the sound and playing it back through other speakers or headphones to try and isolate where the problem is. Beyond that you could contact Zoom and see if they have technical assistance or offer repairs. sorry I'm not more help.

    Otherwise occurs sound drifting when you try to synchronize with the video. It has to be the same as the camera natively records, or it will slightly desync as the time passes and you will have to make a lot of manual adjustments. If your camera records with a higher quality, you can use a higher quality with the Zoom H1, otherwise it will just be a pain. Normally every camera use 48kHz, I never saw one that doesn't, so this quality must be pretty good, or more than good enough.

    The zoom says that the SD card is full yet when I plug it into the computer, the sd card is empty. I recorded a lot of audio on the SD card then transferred all files to my computer and deleted from the SD card. Is there a hidden trash folder on the SD card that I need to empty?

  • @Wyurman

    Format the card in the Zoom recorder, simply deleting them in the computer can cause complications. With the recorder off, press and hold the button with the trash icon. Slide on the power. The display should ask you to format (or erase) the card by pressing the record button. If you're sure you want to delete everything, press Record. Hope that helps!

    You can certainly use the recorder while shooting video with any camera. You'll then need to synch them together in your video editing software. A third-party software called Pluraleyes can help synch audio.

    +Paul B I believe you need to purchase the micro SD card separately. The recorder has built in storage though. If you want to adjust the audio levels turn off Auto Level and use the up and down buttons to manually adjust your audio. Hope that helps.

    +Paul B What lav did you get? Did you figure the problem out? A few guesses. 1. Does the lav need a battery? No power, no sound. Is it a lav for an iPhone? iPhone's use a different connector than other devices so it might not work in the Zoom. Any chance you plugged it into the headphone jack rather than the mic jack? Good luck.
