  • @Guppusmaximus

IMHO, They picked him because he was able to emulate Portnoy's style better and he's more of a Metal drummer. Personally, I think he could be an even better player if he didn't waste so much time on the ambidextrous gimmick. However, Minneman is actually more fluent (played with Necrophagist) but doesn't have that Roadrunner Records Metal appeal and nor does it seem that DT wants to be a real Progressive band any longer. Just my .02

Mr. Mike Mangini, ever since he was just a kid, he was passionate playing drums. Talented right out of the gate. You combine that God given talent with loads of hard work, over half a century's worth, the answer simply=G.O.A.T💪 !!! If people not only in the business let alone other seasoned drummers can't see and hear that this man's skill level is somewhere in the stratosphere, then they are either blind or deaf and unfortunately some are both. A kind hearted man with an incredible gift that he chose to share with all of us. And never has he ever criticised or had a harsh word towards anyone let alone another drummer, total respect. Where he is from, and it just may well be another planet, he represents just fine !!! We all love you Mike, extremely proud of you !! May God continue to bless you, your family and of course your fellow band mates including your predecessor.💪✌❤

He's not just keeping time or playing it safe and that's exactly why he was the perfect choice for this band!

Man... watching this video and reading Mike Mangini's posts on his page, I feel sorry for all the bad feedback he's getting for his drum sounds on Dream Theater albums. The production decisions (be it Richard Chycki's, or Petrucci calling the shots) is messing up the drums and he's getting the blame for it. I for one will cut him some slack. It's bad enough to have to fill Mike Portnoy's shoes as far as drumming and persona goes... I can't even imagine being the new guy in an established 20+ year band with such passionate (and picky) fans, and not getting a say even in my own sounds. All part of the fine print on that job description, I guess, but still. More power to you Mike! - A picky long-time DT fan.

It's 2019 and people are still having Portnoy vs. Mangini debates. Give it a rest! Portnoy isn't coming back. I prefer Portnoy over Mangini myself, but both are phenomenal drummers. It's hard to fill the shoes of some like Portnoy, and I think Mangini has done a great job. The amount of hateful comments I've seen directed towards him is disgusting and childish. I've met him once and he was the nicest, humblest guy ever, not to mention a technical beast on the drums. So give it a rest people.

I've never understood the hate for Mangini. He's an incredible drummer and fits in perfectly with DT's sound. There's no doubt that Portnoy was also incredible and was responsible for so much of their success as a band, but Mangini is phenomenal to watch and listen to. It's like the perpetual argument whether Tarja, Annette or Floor is the best Nightwish singer - they've all brought something new to the band in my view. Mangini hasn't got the same performance charisma as Portnoy, but he's a different style of drummer.

This whole thing sounds better than the album version. James sounds awesome here!!! I think it's because the track isn't lathered with reverb and other effects, it sounds raw and clean and beautiful!

Mangini keeps musicality from DT alive. Even though he's an extraordinary musician, a master as the rest of the member, he is able to fit easily into the music complexity, rhythmically speaking. I hope he can develop his own tone on the upcoming records.

DT should remix all their Mangini era albums with this drum sound. Absolutely killer

I've never been a fan of dream theater, but I really appreciate the skill involved. This guy isn't just a drummer. He's a true musician. I think I like this "smaller" kit better then the usual cube set up.

The thing about the production on the Mangini era albums is that Mangini is still the newcomer to the band, so he probably doesn’t want to tell John and Jordan what to do. It’s their project. On the other hand, Portnoy was there since day one, so he had as much control as JP and JR. That might be the problem with the album production for some people.

This was a eye opener. I always wondered why the drums sounded so flat in the albums. It sounds so freaking good here. Such a graceful player.
