I had the privilege of playing in a Band with Mike back in the early 80's and even as a teenager into his early 20's, he was not only an incredible drummer back then, but he was super to work with and a genuine nice person. I am so happy to see that he is doing what he loves and has helped make great music over the years.

Mangini is a genius and an absolute master. It is a crying shame he gets so much hate because he replaced Portnoy and actually gets blamed for DT's sound going soft, like he has any control over the mixing and production of the DT records.

I don't think anyone thinks he's not a master drummer. I just prefer Portnoy's sound more than Mangini. Mangini's sound is just so hard. Portnoy's drums sounds more organic, softer.

@@alieffauzanrizky7202 I know... You can't have a single thread, video, article, interview, talk, ANYTHING without some idiot mentioning Portnoy. I'm sooooooo beyond sick of seeing that. It's been discussed more than anything else I've ever seen over and over on the internet. I wish these people would just appreciate things for what they are. The bottom line is, Portnoy made the best albums of his life after leaving DT and the world is better for it. If they don't like it, don't listen and leave people who do the hell alone.

Exactly. You watch this dude's drum solos and realize that the only people who can even comprehend what he is capable of playing are those who are musically educated on a drum kit. He is literally too good for anyone else to appreciate. It's like an American toddler trying to understand Arabic. This guy is phenomenal and anyone who disagrees with that really just has no idea what they are talking about. With that being said, I still hate the fact that Dream Theater exists without Portnoy...but his replacement is more than capable.

That's a true fact. But I hear very light melody in his play, btw I like how you use the word perfection, but its't perfect yet as we all know in DT. I felt lots of MP's influences in him now, or is he trying to find that soul DT needs some how?

Watching drum cam footage of Mike playing to any dream theater song feels like an education. The way he chooses every note really seems to flow and follow the music so well. His playing seems to go beyond playing the pocket and really adds color and shape to the groove. Check out his personal KZread channel for his drum cam footage of playing Metropolis pt.1 in the unision section, ITS UNREAL and demonstrates how short changed Manginis musical contribution gets in recordings and DVDs.

Yeah, after watching some of his playthroughs, it makes me appreciate him and the sound that much more. I wish more drummers were conscientious of things going on in music and making efforts to accent them, like he does....choosing to play for the song more than for himself. It's amazing.

He's technically amazing, but I find his drumming in DT boring and flat compared to Portnoy. I don't think that's entirely his fault though; he probably doesn't have the dame degree of freedom as Portnoy did with writing his parts since he's not a founding member.

The reason Lars isn't as good as this, is because he doesn't care about being a great drummer. He only cares about being Metallica's drummer. He's said it him self, he doesn't practice drumming, only practices Metallica songs. There really isn't a place for a drummer like MM in Metallica. It just wouldn't fit.

Mangini's body didn't have to take nearly 2 decades of drug and alcohol abuse, and Lars only runs Metallica songs, he's not even working to improve, he's just trying not to lose what he has. Lars' playing in '89-'91 era is also pretty inarguably great for what Metallica is. Most of the hate he gets is deserved, but Metallica and Dream Theater require such different things behind the kit.

This guy also plays exclusively at the easy end of the dynamic range. Drummers who just do all this light tappy stuff can go into their 70's. If we were having this conversation 15 feet from that kit we wouldn't have to raise our voices. That's why modern Dream theater drumming sounds like people setting coffee cups on a table and Metallica sounds like the cavalry running down the enemy. Lars doesn't have to care about being a great drummer. He is a great drummer.

Este Drum set me gusta más que el actual... Creo que puedes jugar más en todo el set, que el actual, y que tienes todo más cerca y te cansas menos y creo que a los Fans de la batería como yo estaríamos más agradecidos.

Petrucci and rudess gang should let mangini have a free hand in having his drum piece when do compose songs. Not having him in song writing process is an insult to his genius.

all comments about manginis technicality... come on people!! From the very beginning this has been a band of TECHNICAL musicians. being that way implies they have soul and feeling and talents the size of a galaxy. the boring soulless you talk about is your own lack of talent.

Ironic how Mangini's drumming that I enjoy the most, with DT, is in the only album that he didn't work with the rest of the band on studio (A Dramatic turn Of Events)! I think JP should work the drum parts more often!...

Point of fact, I offered no opinion. I came to observe Mangini's technique and see if there was anything to learn from it. When I got hear people were insulting people who prefer Portnoy or even share the reasonable criticism that Mangini's playing is too robotic. If anyone is trolling here it's clearly they guy at the top. Pay closer attention.

"They know more about music than you" is an opinion seeing as you know nothing about how much either side knows about music.

That is not an opinion. That is a factual statement. He's lamenting the use of terms he doesn't understand. They clearly know more about music than he. Even if I was wrong that wouldn't be an opinion. It would be a falsehood, but it isn't because it's true. "The Earth is flat." is not an opinion. It's a falsehood. "The Earth is spherical." Is not an opinion. It's a fact.

I would never claim that Mike isn't a great player or that 'this guy is better than that guy' but for my own personal tastes I don't find his playing to be all that interesting. That being said I really enjoy what he did on this track, technical and yet very musical. A solid overall performance.
