Mike Mangini Drum Cam The Alien Live w/Album Music

Музыка

All AD's are OFF on the MikeMangini KZread Channel. Publishers usually turn them on via their Channels. These are my live drums for The Alien mixed with the tracks from our last album, "A View from the Top of the World." Although I was involved with the drum sounds and engineer on AVFTTOTW more than I've ever been to the tune of some years working a LOT with Jimmy T., this video is simply my raw tracks bounced out and I panned, EQ'd a bit on the kick & snare and that's about it. NO EQ on each Tom Track, only some on the AUX bussed track. I just wanted to spit this out. Not as sassy as the album sound, but it's raw, it's me both in bending w/feel within the click, dynamics and sound. This is a really challenging song to come out of the gate blaring and playing first. The balance shifts and tightness required are pretty demanding. It is what it is.
Check out the same take, but with no music and click track. It's a mind-burner!

I feel incredibly lucky to have witnessed the 'A View from the Top of the World' tour in Singapore, especially after learning about Mangini's departure from the band. Mangini's contributions as a drummer to DT are undeniable. His technical prowess broke through the barriers of the Portnoy era, allowing DT's music to venture into even bolder territories. I'm deeply disappointed with DT's decision, although I know they couldn't care less about my disappointment. To put it bluntly, just the drumming in the song 'Alien' alone is enough to keep MP practicing for a while, let alone creating such drumming. Among DT's decisions, letting MP go was the second biggest mistake, and bringing him back was the top one. I can confidently say that, among all drummers worldwide, nobody is more suitable for DT than Mangini.

There's no other band out there with such a collection of musical titans {of their respective instruments} all in the same band. I've never been a fan of James LaBrie's vocal style and he can be very hit and miss live, but everyone else in the band is off the charts amazing as musicians. I read an interview with Mike and Jimmy T in Modern Drummer magazine about what they did to capture the sound of the drums in DT studio. I'm not enough into technologies to appreciate given informations fully, but they really put a lot of effort into it - and it paid off. For example, they used four (in fact five) microphones just to capture the bass drum sound. It also helped that Mike never minds any amount of microphones around his drums - he never said: this thing has to go out of my way. It's impressive how many different things and abilities contribute to the outcome. I would emphasize Jimmy T's ability to balance the demands of five people, each of whom could release his part as a solo, especially on this album.

I was #1 spotlight and had to follow Vai. Mangini was playing some crazy extended fills during a song and I slowly panned the spotlight to him. I got yelled at on the clearcom and went back to Vai. Every time I watch this I just feel like I need to say thank you to Mike for sharing this with the world! I mean, Mike is already on 11 normally but this song takes it up another notch from there! THANK YOU MIKE! You will be sorely missed in DT. I was at your show at Merrymour Park in Redmond, WA last year and it was incredible! I would have been so pissed if I hadn't gone then found out you were leaving the band! Thank you again for everything!

Just when Dream Theater were about to reach that 'Rush' composition greatness especially with Drumming, they fire their drummer , I can understand it from sentimental point of view that life is too short and they started the band together, but I cant also help to feel v. sad that Mangini is gone

Having multiple hi-hats gives lots of options for tonal change etc, and simulating key change. It is something I want to be able to do, but setting up remote hi-hat cables live would take 10 minutes, let alone the other stuff I have to use. Like the legendary Phil Leotardo said once, : "I compromised"

@@AllThisOverASliceOfGabagool Oh no don't get me wrong I totally get it, in fact I found out about the little push-button hithat lock from him and I use it on my xhats to either keep them slightly open or closed shut and I have just a normal hihat by my side. I just think it's funny how he has like 3, 4, sometimes 5 hats it seems on some of his kits. I've seen more from him than any other drummer. Just making a joke.
