Zenyatta - 2009 Breeders Cup Classic

Спорт

Perhaps the Horse of the Year title is not a foregone conclusion. Zenyatta gave the crowd what they waited for - and the patrons responded by cheering, clapping, and waving - as she ran her unbeaten streak to 14 with a magnificent performance in the Breeders Cup Classic (gr. I) Nov. 7 at Santa Anita.
Zenyatta looked uncomfortable for the first 200 yards and was last the first time by the stands, but she was flying down the stretch the second time and rolled by Gio Ponti to win the $5-million race. She became the first filly or mare to win the Classic.
Most voters had Rachel Alexandra penciled in as Horse of the Year but Zenyattas victory over males has re-opened that argument.

    I can only imagine how you felt! I watched it on TV and could hardly contain myself. Zenyatta was a once-in-a-lifetime horse. I can't think of any race as exciting as this one since although the intense duel of Alydar and Affirmed in the 1978 Belmont was definitely a nail-biter.

    This is my favorite video of this race (and I've watched them all multiple times), because you can hear the crowd start roaring as she rounds the final turn and then just go haywire screaming.

    Wonderful recording, love hearing the crowd's reaction as they head into the stretch. What always impresses me is not only is she a PHENOMENAL racehorse, but she has such a lovely temperament. In every video I've seen of her, she's kind and gentle (a fantastic mom to her foals), and even when she's high-energy, she's still quite well-behaved. Extremely impressive and truly a horse that really loves to run.

    This clip doesn't have the info about her being a little upset with having to stand in the gate so long, happenings surrounding the gate scratch, hesitating out of the gate and then starting on the wrong lead and Mike having to wrestle her to the right lead. That makes her win even more remarkable.

I wasn’t alive to watch big red / slew / affirm / personal ensign but I can say that Zenyatta was the reason I became a fan of this sport. You are so right about that "monster move" around the turn. It was incredible but it gets lost in the other coverage. Reminds me of the female equivalent of Secretariat. I don't think we saw half of what she was truly capable of. I wish she had been ready to run the Belmont. This is not a slam against John Shirreffs, I just think there was a whole helluva lot more there. We will never see her like again.

    +SS MM (SM) I think it's really difficult to compare them. What AP did was unbelievable, what Zenyatta accomplished in her career was unbelievable too but in a different aspect. They have two different careers IMO. If AP can win the BCC comparing would be easier.

    +Laura Day I thought Mike smith waited too long in the 2010 breeders cup. I still believe to this day No one could beat Zenyatta. The way she gobbled up ground with speed and she seemed to do it so effortlessly. AP in previous races just seemed so strong it was like they didn't make a track big enough for him. but I've been going to Saratoga for many years and theirs just something about the stretch at Saratoga that is so unforgiving. no horse is safe there. it seems to claim victims without mercy.

    +SS MM (SM) I still feel like no horse could beat Zenyatta, but in 2010 Classic, she looked uncomfortable racing on that track. If I recall correctly, she only trained a few times at Churchill, I think maybe if she had a gallop or two more over the surface, she would have won. I still have such a hard time watching that race without wanting to cry. lol. AP looked so tired to me, especially when the announcer called out that Victor is asking him to run, not AP starting to run by himself. Doesn't Saratoga have a longer stretch too? With all credit to Fly Down, he closed beautifully, but if AP was on his a game, like he was during the TC and Haskell, AP would have pulled away himself.

    She doesn't beat AP. Not best on best. Remember, he set the race record and put up a 120 Beyer with relatively soft fractions in his BC classic win. She'd have never caught him. Honestly, the same would have happened if she'd raced Rachel. Don't misunderstand - Z closed like a rocket propelled bullet train - but you can't give up 10 or 15 to horses like AP and Rachel and expect to run them down late. You'd have to PRAY they get burned on their early fractions, or you have no chance.

    One of the very greatest, but don't forget that Ruffian set or equaled a stakes or track record EVERY TIME SHE RAN. On her maiden race as a two year old filly she equaled the Belmont track record for 5 1/2 furlongs. Belmont. A maiden. A filly. Two years old. She also ran the fastest 6 furlongs every run by a two-old of EITHER sex at Saratoga. And some very good colts raced there as two year olds. Secretariat and Equipoise come to mind.

    Yes but you fail to mention that she ran the SLOWEST opening half mile in the history of the race. In theory, you could run the fastest closing quarter in history and still run dead last, as it's all relative to how quickly you run early. Imagine a person running a mile race, jogging the first 3/4 and then sprinting the final 1/4. To be fair, it's far more difficult to sustain speedy quarters in succession, using speed in the early, middle. AND late stages.

    One other thing BigRed73Forever, why do you look at Zenyatta's races if you have such low regard for her? Why don't you peddle your negativity elsewhere? OK. In the ongoing debate between William HIggins and BedRed73Forever, I declare William Higgins the winner. I watched Secretariat win that Belmont, and I think he was the greatest race horse of all time . . . BUT Zenyatta is a super Filly, and she surely is the FEMALE equivalent of Big Red . . . which means there were two female equivalents of Secretariat back then (Rachel Alexandra). That sounds crazy, but Secretariat himself was crazy. These anomalies happen! (I gave extra points to William Higgins, because BedRed73 sounds like an overbearing man who is worried that his masculinity is threatened by a filly who can beat colts.)

    No comparison to Secretariat. Two races against males with one win is not comparable to two seasons of record-breaking performances against the likes of Sham, Key to the Mint, Kennedy Road, Riva Ridge, etc., a Triple Crown culminating with a still-standing world record, a championship title on turf, 2-time HOY with one title coming at age 2. Sorry but there is no comparison because she beat ultra weak fillies in all but one race. One Classic win doesn't propel her close to Big Red.

  • @williamhiggins2311
    @williamhiggins231110 жыл бұрын

    I said the "female equivalent" of Big Red. Reading comprehension is a wonderful thing. I did not say she was the "male equivalent" of Big Red. As for "weak fillies" you don't know what you're talking about. Go back and do a little research. She is in a class by herself as far as female horses go for the past 100 years. Why is it important for you to knock her? Why can't you accept the greatness in front of your eyes? I know she wasn't Secretariat. But she sure was his FEMALE equivalent.

  • @bigred73forever16
    @bigred73forever1610 жыл бұрын

    @WilliamHiggins To say I have a reading comprehension problem when you make no sense at all is hysterical. You called Zenyatta the "female equivalent" of Secretariat, which she is clearly not. I clearly addressed why she is not. Your response if to say I have a comprehension problem? For starters, based solely on records, schedules, surfaces, time and length records, and amount of run styles, NO they are NOT equivalents. Secondly, equivalent means EQUAL, and since you now want to argue about this, it's impossible for a female to be the equal of a male. PERIOD. Furthermore, when you try and compare a mare limited to a single run style of one late closing kick to a TRIPLE CROWN and TURF CHAMPION who exhibited multiple runs styles (the ability to close, make middle moves, surge to the front and maintain world-record fractions throughout) then you clearly have no comprehension of the term EQUIVALENT. How is one run style the equal of one run style? How is a TC Champion with still standing world, track and stakes records the equal a mare with zero? How is a Secretariat, a horse who beat the best males on the planet on multiple surfaces (fast dirt, wet dirt, slop, and turf) the equivalent of a mare with zero wins against males on dirt? Please answer me with facts and not insults. I bet you can't! There is no comparison! You feel because she was a five year old female who closed to beat one group of males ONCE makes her the equivalent of the greatest horse of all time who regularly trounced not only the greatest of his era (Kennedy Road, Key to the Mint, Cougar II, Sham, Forego, Linda's Chief, etc.) but also the best times ever recorded by any horse of all time? You are the one who cannot accept facts. Go back to fantasyland. And by the way...jut because I comment sometimes on videos does not make me a hater. I have seen your posts on other videos knocking Rachel Alexandra, so I guess that makes you a big fat hypocrite! Get a life and some knowledge. Better yet, come back at me with some facts! Your mare didn't even run until age 4, which is why she was still running at 6. She NEVER strung together multiple victories against males, and I can provide you with a list of 30 mares or more who easily did that against the world's best. Unless of course, you think racing begins and ends with the BC Classic, a race that didn't exist until 1984!

    BigRed73Forever I have been privileged to see both Secretariat and Zenyatta in my lifetime and I agree that Secretariat is the greatest thoroughbred ever, but Zenyatta is the most exciting horse I have ever watched race.
