I'm pretty sure I remember that Charlie Whittingham was very annoyed with P Val for whipping the horse to the wire when he was already winning by a mile. P Val said, "I wanted to make sure he got something out of it" (for fitness). Mr. Whittingham said, "You leave the training to ME!" I recognized all the names of the horses in this race, but I wouldn't have remembered that Houston was favored.

Sunday silence was sold off to a Japanese stud for a rock bottom price. What a mistake. He proved himself the top sire in Japan for one and a half decades and his sons are not just great race horses but sires too. Deep impact a son of Sunday silence sired the English Epsom derby winner this year. But yet on the wikipedia page of Sunday silence some clown has written that if he had retired to stud in Kentucky he would have been a failure. His progeny are winning top class races all over the world and will continue for generations to come. His much vaunted rival Easy goer in comparison was merely a good horse and a decent stallion for a short number of years. Sunday silences American connections made a huge mistake in letting him go to Japan ! The American bloodstock industry lost out.

And most pertinent, Alex Harthill admitted in 2005 to the Daily Racing Form that he illegally administered the powerful performance enhancing drug Clenbuterol to SS, as well as many other performance enhancing drugs to SS and many other horses he treated.

Prove it. As far as the records go, Whittingham, in almost 50 years as a trainer won 250 stakes and had earnings of $109,000,000. He sent horses to the gate 13,800 times, won 2,500 races, and never had a horse test positive. But when he beats the prematurely coronated "next Secretariat" three times in four meetings, he accomplished the feat by plying Sunday Silence with illegal drugs. Seriously? Whittingham had been training for 36 years before he sent Ferdinand to the Derby in 1986. This guy did not have "Derby Fever". So, again, prove it? What were the drugs? Where is the evidence? If Jay Hovdey truly got Harthill to confess he drugged Sunday Silence provide evidence of that interview. If you can't you're just another pathetic Easy Goer die-hard who still has the bitter taste of bile in his mouth almost a quarter of a century after the 1989 Classic was run.

The best horse doesn't always win, that's what makes horse racing. The track came up muddy on Derby day, EG still ran well, though he hated it. BC at Gulfstream, fast track all day, then an afternoon shower, made it quite slick on top, no time to furrow it. That, along with the curvature of a true oval( Silence ran turns so well) Put Easy at a disadvantage, I k excuses blah blah, I call them reasons. EG's dam couldn't stand up in the mud, in the Preakness, he's getting crowded into the rail, Day moved to early, then the stupid stunt with the reign in deep stretch. Pat Day, great guy, but one of the most overated riders ever.. SS did get the 3 wins, but I do believe Easy Goer was the better horse, should have got one or 2 more. Believe me, I would have made more $ betting SS, but the satisfaction of the Belmont, in a California wagering facility, with Silence at 1/5 or something, seemed I was the only person in there that bet Easy Goer. Hell of a ride despite the argument..

He was told that he was not popular at all because of his bad looks and his hot temper. But what would Americans think when they saw that this horse was a huge success as a stallion in Japan and that his children were doing well all over the world?

Only Prized and Easy Goer, of the horses you mentioned, were eligible as 3 year olds to run in this race. And Prized hadn't developed enough to be competitive in it and Easy Goer was based in New York prepping for the Derby. But you are also misinformed as to the quality of horses Sunday Silence beat this race. Flying Continental would retire with over $1.8 million in earnings and won 2 gr1 races, the Strub Stakes and New York's most important distance race on dirt for open aged horses, the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Hawkster and Music Merci would both earn over $1.5 million. Hawkster at age 2 had won the gr1 Norfolk on dirt by almost 9 lengths, then later in his career on turf win the gr2 Del Mar Derby, gr1 Secretariat in Chicago, and then in as a 3 year old against older dominate the gr1 Oak Tree Invitational in world record time for a mile and z half. Music Merci had won the gr1 Del Mar Futurity and gr2 Hoist the Flag Stakes at 2, had earlier in 1989 won the gr2 San Rafael, and would later add the gr2 Illinois Derby and gr3 Malibu Stakes. 37 months after winning the Malibu he completed a remorkable comeback with a win in the gr3 Palos Verdes. Even the much maligned Houston won 3 graded stakes and would have been a top sprinter/miler had Lukas dropped the illusion he could be Triple Crown contender earlier. He won the gr2 Bay Shore in New York in his race prior to the SA Derby, would win the gr3 Derby Trial at Churchill next out, and later won the gr3 Kings Bishop(now a gr1). So, in fact, Sunday Silence trounced a field of some quality.

I timed Sunday Silenc's pull-up. With Valenzuela standing up in the irons waving his crop, Sunday Silence covered the extra eighth before the turn while being pulled up in 13 seconds giving him a time of 2:00 3/5 for the Derby Distance of a 1 1/4 miles. Again, that was with Valenzuela pulling him up. I've never seen that before or since.
